He lost his place for Spain to Kepa (of all players) due to terrible form. His awful showing at the last World Cup was the catalyst for his decline since then. It's psychological. Hopefully Henderson breathing down his neck will get him back to his best.
Also, if he does well with Spain again it might help get the monkey off his back at club level.

If he gets back to his best Henderson won't have a prayer. His top level is ridiculous. I hope Henderson can push him.

Luis Enrique on De Gea: "When he makes a mistake, everyone talks. When you play a game like this, we should do the "ola" for it. It would be okay if tomorrow he was on the cover of an important newspaper or that they publish "what a goalie we have".

Yeah looked decent last night, nothing that you wouldn't expect him to not save... but considering some of the stuff he has been letting in its good to see him keep (almost) everything out.

I like our GK situation. Have been a big De Gea defender on this forum but there's no denying that he needs a kick up the backside. The best scenario is that Henderson pushes De Gea back to his phenomenal peak.

His passing seemed good too. Henderson will need to be able to top that.

Much needed game for him that. He looked calm and composed.

Spending time on the previous and this thread has made me realise quite how few average fans have ever been involved in coaching GKs not my specialism but by any standard that was a very good all round performance not just a “he should be saving those” kind of game.

The absolute best case scenario is that Henderson pushes De Gea and he regains his form. I have no doubt that Henderson can be a good keeper, but when De Gea is at his best he is on a level very few keepers have ever reached.

Stop comparing Henderson to De Gea. One is an international keeper for Spain and has been saving United's shortcomings since Fergie left. He can handle the pressure. The other one is just a cocky English lad like Joe Hart. Lets get real.

Even when he actually saves a penalty it still ends up a goal. Very indifferent performance once more, doesn’t inspire any confidence in his defence. I wonder if Ole is brave enough to drop him.

He fecked up pretty bad at the start but for the rest of the game he was fine I guess. Shame about the pen.

Why would he drop him? He didn’t do anything wrong?

Best game in ages, great save from Ayew in the first half and saved a pen

I liked that he came off his line a few times, it's one of my biggest criticisms I've had of him.

Hopefully the threat of being dropped for Henderson spurs him on to get back to his WC form

Don't care about the official stats, he saved that pen and my god it was good.

He was good today and i am laying into him when he isn't. Just bad luck that Lindelöf was letting him down.

David’s still going to make great saves but I just don’t have confidence in him. I also think he lacks personality between the sticks and is quite passive! Compare him to the Great Dane and EVDS and it’s night and day! It didn’t matter so much with Rio and Nemanja but with Lindelof and Harry there seems very little leadership and organisation

:houllier:

He was terrible in the WC, which resulted in him being slaughtered by the Spanish press

I wish he’d not done it for the penalty though

This was quite noticeable in today’s performance. I wonder if he’s been told he has to be a bit more proactive in such situations or he’ll find himself on the bench soon.

It’s a shame penalty was retaken. Not fair, as he touched the line. In fact, it felt like Atkinson was bribed or something

It was Jon Moss at the VAR room. That explains it. That guy is a joke as a ref.

Universe was so stunned he made a penalty save they had to correct it. Glad he came off his line today, it's been a big complaint of mine for a long time. I was worried we were in for a nervy performance after that dodgy, early kick but he made a good save a bit later on.

 where was this scrutinising of the line when Pepe Reina was jumping out to the six yard line charging down penalties. Ridiculous, deserved the penalty save for the confidence boost.

Looks incredibly shaky in the outfield as well, it will take some serious stones to drop him.

He had one miskick early on, the rest of the game he was totally calm and handled everything well. Strange to talk about dropping him after such a strong performance.
