I do wonder why we went for Maguire (for that price) if the plan was to keep Lindelof as one of the main two. I've liked Maguire since he was at Hull and wish we'd gone for him when he was cheap, but he's very slow and is only, at best, 'good' defensively rather than it being an actual strength. It's why I thought that Smalling would, yet again, quickly establish himself as first choice as he's the best we've got to cover those two aspects which would allow Maguire to focus on what he is good at. Instead in pre-season it was obvious that Maguire and Lindelof were the main two, Tuanzebe seemed to be next in line and then from memory even Jones and Rojo (or maybe it was only one of them) got more minutes. Smalling unsurprisingly saw the writing on the wall and asked to leave.

In saying that, it doesn't really matter who we bought, we still would have had to buy a second as none of our senior defenders are good enough. Smalling isn't good enough on the ball, Bailly, Rojo and Jones are too injury-prone and Lindelof is...well, Lindelof. Unless the entire plan was to hope Tuanzebe would take the step up, but it is appearing increasingly likely that he's going to join the injury-prone club and we may need to rely on Mengi. So ultimately we'd need a second defender no matter who we bought last season, and the fact that it was Maguire just means we know that whoever that second defender is needs to have certain strengths (most noticeably he needs to be fast).
Agree but it's like finishing with girlfriends or divorcing your wife in hope that the next one is better than last. At some point, you have to look at maybe what's wrong with you? Signing another CB if the quality of coaching is poor, only going to result in the same outcome. I like Ole but I'm sorry, he's not experienced or qualified to run a club of this magnitude. If you are Samsung, you get the best person from Apple. Ole gets the sack tomorrow, he doesn't any of the top 50 clubs in the world. If we sold Pogs tmw, he's bought by one of the top 5 clubs in the world. That's the difference.

I have no hope for him anymore. Even at his best, he always has a bad moment or two (which usually ends with us conceding or nearly conceding) in a game. He’s weak, both physically and mentally.

As for his ball playing abilities, I have never seen him pick out one of our forwards or try something adventurous (and pull it off). Always ends up going for the safest pass. Maguire is nothing better, but at least ends up trying those (which I’m not sure is a good thing btw, since we end up losing the ball more often than not).

I’d honestly play Smalling over him. Yeah our style of football might be affected slightly, but in a game like yesterday, we might just have come away with a win or a draw.

After this game. I can easily say Scott is a better defender than victor. Easy no brainer.

Think you're right there. I just don't think Smalling would have got done for the goal like he did yesterday, or at least it wouldn't happen anywhere near as often over the season. He's shocking at times, you wonder how scouts didn't see or just ignored the issues he has (can't run, jump, head).

Mourinhos own scout recommended him and he wanted to sign him. He then decided after a few months he wasn’t good enough and wanted another CB. You really can’t make it up.

The set up at United is a bit mental isn't it? Managers having their own personal scouts and then shed loads of other scouting staff and no one person is charge.

He is honestly the most spineless CB i have seen, never taking responsibility, always pointing fingers at others. He is weak, poor in the air, slow as as a tank. Furthermore, his passing is nothing to be raving about either. Maguire is far better than him, he wins headers and is rarely bullied by any strikers, in addition he is a good long passer. I really wish we can offload this fraud, he will be more suited to Spanish league where his feeble strength and weak aerial ability won't be highlighted.

Honestly one of the worst games I’ve seen from a defender at United. Didn’t do anything right.

We really need someone who knows football managing us instead of business people, but it looks like it’s a pipe dream at the moment.

Yep - explains why we’ve been such a mess over the last few years.

Mourinho was such a poor appointment at that stage, doesn’t help the CEO has no mind of his own and relies on recommendations of other scouts or coaches.

until Woodward is cleared out we have no chance of getting back to the top, but he will never sack himself

Probably his worst game in his career. Hope it’s just him being rusty and he’ll come back for next match.

He looked exactly the same as normal to me.
No he wasn’t. Normally he’s quite good but yesterday was really poor. I hope and think he and some other players who also were below normal standard, all jump up a step or two for the next match.

Yep... No idea how anyone rates him.
Agreed. He’s one of those players I’ve never seen play well. Clearly he doesn’t shit the bed every week, but I can’t remember a single game where he’s been outstanding or won us the game. His top level is 7/10 - and he doesn’t hit it that often.

Was he even rated at Benfica?

If he plays the next game then perhaps Ole is trying to do a Jose to try and prove a point to the Board.

He always has this in him. He cost us the EL semis and now this. You can be rusty but this shite, doesn't make sense. Plus it's not as if his top level is WC. He is barely ok when he is playing well.

Only plus for him is that he is not a sick note like the rest of our CBs apart from Maguire. So, maybe we can recoup something for him once (if) we upgrade.

he gets a zero for yesterday. It was beyond bad, at fault for all 3 goals. Get rid of him. Smalling is better and we are trying to sell him

He isn't normally good. My opinion hasn't changed on him since the first game I saw him play for us. Even watching videos before he joined. And this was at a time we could have bought Maguire for around £16m. I don't know what we were thinking.

I thinks so, mate. I could be wrong but I think Lewandowski said he was one of the toughest CBs he'd faced before he joined.

Lewandowski must've been on the booze that game. Or we got Victor's evil twin or something.

Benfica signs him from Swedish third tier club Vasteras for 60k, spends 5 years at the club, only one of those seasons he's a regular starter at CB, we buy him for 35 million.. How has this travesty of a deal not been criticised more?

Get rid. I’ve tried to give my fellow swede a chance. But there’s no hope left. He shouldn’t be near a top club again. The most overrated CB I have ever seen.

Can Mctominay play CB? He seems to have all the physical qualities for it.

If we look at last season’s PL, he started slightly off but then he was good and consistent. At the last 10-15 matches I think he was our best defender. In the most important game agaisnt Leicester I would say he was the main reason we play Champions League and not EL this season. Then he finished weak in the EL semi final agree.

He is bang average and it shows. His best level is slightly above average. If that's the level for our starters, then God help us.

He should be nowhere near our starting 11 but we don't have any other fit CBs. We have 3 sick notes as options. What's the point of having a squad when they are always injured.

Problem is it's not. He is always a step from fecking up, he has no composure or authority. I bet half of the strikers love playing against him as he never gives them a good kicking.

Lindelöf is lucky that he is playing for us because our second string never stays healthy for any run of games plus Bailly is as headless as he is reckless but he at least strikes fear into other players. Ole needs to take some blame here admit that he was wrong about Smalling. Lindelöf shouldn't even be close to the first eleven after that shit show in the semis.

Been saying this for years since he came here he lacks all the attributes for a good CB. Not pacey, bad in the air, lack of strength and I could go on. That won't change but his positioning might.

Hope, We Lose
The only difference between yesterday and 95% of Lindelof's other performances for United is that opponents were able to take advantage of his obvious shortcomings. He got by in the middle of last season, or the 2nd half of the season before that and wasnt punished that often for his mistakes. But he still had glaring weaknesses that were pointed out at the time. Our opponents didnt exploit them so some (a lot) people liked to pretend those weaknesses werent there. Surprise - They are.

Normally he has AWB to babysit him. That's the only difference.

Ole said Bailly is looking very sharp in training so Lindelof should deservedly be dropped after such a disastrous performance.

You’re overreacting because of a very poor game from him. Last season we had least conceded goals in open play of all PL teams, despite quite a few DDG howlers. You don’t achieve that if one of the CB was as poor as you describe. But I fully agree it’s a huge problem that the other CBs are a huge problem. They are always injured and not very good. We would need a third CB who can stay fit, who can compete for a CB spot and also to rotate CBs.

So you want the CEO to be deciding which players are signed rather than the football people at the club?

Lindelof has been horrible since he got here. His start was so shambolic that the moment he managed to string a couple of 6/10 performances United fans wanted to convince themselves so bad he had turned a corner. He’s never been good let alone “quite good”.

I think some of our fans don't actually watch our defending and just lump the entire defence together when things go wrong. Macguire has a had a handful of games where he has made slight errors, similar to most good centre backs. He is not perfect, but he is a really good centre back that is forced to take on more responsibility than most do since he's playing with someone who takes none. He always has to cover for Lindelof's aerial difficulties and lack of strength, which always forces him to leave certain areas exposed. In our new system where AWB is higher up and cannot always cover Lindelof, it's more exposed now. Macguire is also forced to spend most of his time in defence making passing decisions as Lindelof makes no decisive decisions there either. It's literally a one man back line. In fact one could argue, the errors Macguire has made has been a result of being tasked to babysit Lindelof. Lindelof can't make a tackle and is forced to be passive as he doesn't have the skills to be aggressive. People need to see this and stop blaming others.

Yeah. 3 years I think it's fair to evaluate him now. I'd say you are right. First season he struggled massively. His second season wasn't good, it was a pretty bad running equal in performances with Smalling who got replaced with Maguire on the back end of that season. At most you could speculate that Lindelof improving from shit to same level as a pretty bad season from Smalling was 'promising' for him. Enough to earn him a shot maybe. It's not bad for a Swedish international to establish himself as a Premier League CB, which I think he is, but in terms of Man Utd standard we have lost sight. Last season was his best, he did do well. To go into this season with him as a set in stone first choice CB with no competition is actually frightening.

Plenty of the caf called all his weaknesses when he came. We still played him loads. The we signed Maguire and many of us said he'd be a terrible partner for him.

What i don't get, if we can so easily call these out, why the club and coaches and continue to flog this dead horse?

You don't rotate a settled CB pairing. That's the big thing. Last season we were better defensively but it was not because of Lindelof. AWB played a big role and so did Maguire.

He didn't have AWB to bail him out yesterday and he fecked up massively. Agreed that he is not THIS poor but he is a bang average defender nonetheless and has no stand out qualities which shout out that he should be a starter for us.
