"Basic rule of goalkeeping" is to ignore the context(or how close was the attacker and reaction time) and apply the same "either catch the ball or push it wide?

Looks like shit rule.

Because He did trying to catch the ball millions times in training, and it's just a warm up. From a shite GK to a great GK, they did the same warm up, that's why it's called "Basic".
Have you ever seen a GK coach shouting "push it wide" in training?

Not sure what your point is after I read your previous post replying to Benito

IMO that's a very good save, all this "basic GK rule" is nonsense (well the rule is not nonsense but quoting it here is by ignoring the context is).

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
I laugh so hard watching this thread.. Basic rules of Goal Keeping is to catch the ball not to tip it wide. Every GK has to be in a position where he can catch the ball.

Do you think a GK can push the ball wide on purpose? if he can, then he is a terrible GK because why not try to catch it first.

A GK shouldn't worry about a rebound, because it's all about defenders. You defend as a unit, this is football not tennis.
If the goalkeeper can catch the ball, of course that is the preferred option.

If the ball is coming too fast or too far wide to catch the ball, of course the preferred option is to knock it out of play or out wide rather than straight back into the middle.

It was refreshing to see GK come of the line and deal with long balls behind defenders.
If his distribution turns to be better or at least on the same level as DeGea's I have no issue with him becoming No.1. We know he is a good shot stopper and he cannot be worse on set pieces as De Gea.

What frustrates me is that we have to wait for a De Gea howler in an important game for Dean to get a start. Ole should be judging clean sheets and what not. If Dean is performing better than David, he should displace him.

That's a very basic way of looking at it. If you dump your number 1 for a young kid that's it, there's no coming back for him.

De gea deserves a last chance to show he is the guy - he's earnt that over the years. if he ends up making mistakes that cost us then we have a capable back up ready to go.

I can tell this thread and De Gea's thread are going to be a bloodbath this season.

For me he's already gotten way too many chances. As a GK you live and die by being consistent unlike strikers who can miss easy targets every now and then. He has already cost us one top 4 position and almost did last year as well.

I would rather be a proactive manager, make a ballsy move and drop him once and for all. Hope I'm wrong but I feel he's gonna cost us a CL knockout this year and I'll be bumping this thread.

We don't even know if Henderson can handle the pressure yet.

He made plenty of mistakes at Sheffield also - probably as many as DDG did for us last year. If he ends up throwing De Gea in the bin and Henderson flops even worse, then we're stuck with Romero or Lee Grant.

Ole is playing this the right way. You don't alienate somebody straight away for no reason.

If/when De Gea gets displaced it will be on merit. Not on a whim. Hopefully everyone will get behind him and back him.

Henderson is getting his chance to adapt to the United culture (albeit without fans) by playing in cup games and so far he’s had a very good first game and yes I happen to think he has some way to develop into a world class GK but that is no criticism.

Hopefully he can take De Gea’s spot when he’s ready as it would save us a huge chunk of wages and a transfer fee on the next big thing GK wise.

Exactly this. We cannot afford to risk losing one of our world class performers either historically or otherwise because it feels good to have an academy lad in goal.

I’d love to see it but more than anything I’d love to see United win the PL again and as far as I’m concerned whoever is best to secure that should be in goal based on merit.

This season we’ll find out if Henderson can hack it and fingers crossed he gives a good showing of himself.

Was fine, wasn't under a lot of pressure though. He came off his line quite quickly too, which is a positive.
Are ‘keepers allowed off their line? I’d almost forgotten they were.

The usual keeper came off his line for the first time in about 3 years and got a penalty against him!

How does Henderson compare with De Gea dealing with crossed?
I think that's De Gea's major weakness.

Good save but he looks even worse than DDG with the ball at his feet

Great reaction save at a crucial point in the game. He's looked very assured so far.

Lad is really a great keeper. We have the position sorted for years to come after De Gea.

He’s a cracking goalkeeper, makes big saves at crucial times. De Gea will have to be back at his best to keep him out.

Did well. Good to have someone to actually put pressure on De Gea.

Doesn't look to be the ball-playing "modern" GK some want, mind.

Agree he i looks a great GK, but not get carried away please. Social distancing him from the British GK syndrome. Too much hype, and pressure too soon would do him disservice.

My thoughts are the exact same. Henderson is such a proactive GK, already I felt a lot more secure when Brighton were crossing the ball into our box.

I really liked his quick throws to try and catch Brighton out of shape. It changes up the way we usually try to play from the back.

Another match and another key save. If he can keep up the new contract was fully justified.

That was a really great save, proper top class. He did make a good save in the first half too although I'd have preferred if he'd palmed it round the post. Good audition so far.

Top save. He is going to be breathing down DeGea’s neck for that no 1 spot.

Hopefully the competition will result in us seeing the godlike form we’ve seen from DeGea in the past.
