I presume given the way they went about the innings the talk in the dressing room is all about laying platforms and exploding at the end. Obviously these are marginal differences, but I really think 3 down given where they were they should be a lot closer to 200.
There has been a pattern in this IPL in majority matches where teams start well and then are not able to accelerate the way they should. But yes Delhi missed a trick here and probably are short by 20 runs.

I wonder if it's a reflection of the league format which means teams would rather play a bit within themselves and consistently get in the 165-185 range than put their foot down, risk losing wickets and shred their NRR.

It could also reflect how the tournament has panned out so far in the sense that teams batting first have won most of the games. But still Delhi missed a trick today, also have to credit CSK pacers of how they balled especially in the latter part of delhi innings.

Surely CSK have a better opener than Vijay?
Faf and Watson should open, they should consider Curran as a pinch hitter too. They keep wasting the powerplay. On paper Raina looks like a big loss for them in terms of team balance.

Yes - they're going for balance with good players through the order but it's not working. Jadhav looks in good touch. They need to get rid of the deadwood and play their best batsmen up top.

Something like Rayudu, Watson, Faf, Jadhav, Dhoni, Curran, Jadeja.

Watson looks pretty past it to me. They haven't got a replacement for him. Raina is missed massively.

Nortje looks class. Occasionally wayward, but looks a good bowler.

It’s also probably because it’s still very early into this tournament on alien pitches and empty stadiums. vast majority playing cricket for first time since lockdown, getting used to bigger boundary and teams still have 12 games still to go. Will take a few more games for the big hitters to find form and range.

Yep that was my thought too. I think if Faf is going to bat like this he has to open though. It's a pretty regressive move, but it might well stop him being a run a ball for the first 20 balls of the innings.

Delhi score now looking very good. Was interesting that Pant found scoring hard so wicket is not as true as it was yesterday.
CSK making a real dogs ear of it

Hugely impressed by Iyer's captaincy. Learning from the best in Ponting. Can see him being India's future captain.

Csk have one of the worst openers among all the team. Dhoni is no longer the dhoni of 5 years let alone 10 and then there is no raina. Csk were always going to disappoint.

Either him or KL.

India are now stacked in many departments now for the future. Just need to make a very brave decision like they did with Dhoni and retire Kohli from captaincy and build batting around him instead with Shaw, Pant, Iyer, Rahul and others. Make it a project like England did to win the next ODI World Cup.

Yeah. I think they’ve taken the dads army concept a year too far. Watson looked fat, old and weary today in the field and when batting. Dhoni is ever less confident in his batting ability too. A side on the wane.

Having Karthik as captain ahead of Morgan is just wrong. Anyone know why KKR chose to do this?

Said this yesterday. Give KL captaincy and let Kohli concentrate on being a world-class batsman.

KL
Sharma
Kohli
Iyer
Samson
Pant
Pandya
Jadeja
Kuldeep
Shami
Bumrah

Good side that.

That's pretty much the side we lineup with these days. Minus Samson, plus Pandey who is a better option imo. The other difference is that Dhawan starts with Rohit, which shouldn't happen anymore.

Chahal would be first choice spinner. Then between Kuldeep/Bhuvi for the other spot based on conditions. Jadeja is preferred by the management but is an extremely overrated limited overs player. He is lethal on raging spin wickets and the only time that's happened is 2013 Champions Trophy in England. Chahal averages 25, Jadeja averages 36.

Yeah, you're right Zing. Forgot about Chahal. Trouble with him is his batting isn't it... With him, Shami and the Bumster you've basically got three no. 11s.

One thing you really lack is a genuine all-rounder. Pandya doesn't cut it for me, as either a batsman or a bowler.

And as you say, Dhawan is past it. Rahul or Shaw are far better options.

IMO india should make a symbolic shift into the new generation. That means retiring Sharma and Dhawan and building batting line up around Kohli only. Get ready for 2025 ODI where Sharma probably won’t be around anyway.

Slightly off topic, but saw this the other day...
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sp...-implore-indian-tycoon-mukesh-ambani-buy-club

Hope he takes the hint. Would be amazing if this happens.
It could make sense as Ambani is the perfect person to enhance United’s commercial business in India which remains a massive white space. So he could profit from the ownership whilst being a much better owner than the Glazers.

only major issue is he would likely apply his normal nepotism by appointing his son or daughter as CEO!

After Ed, how bad can it be?

Think we're heading for a record score here.

Gopal is key - reckon he's a real quality bowler.

Why would smith win the toss and bowl first. Stupid decision. Anyways this pitch is a batting paradise so hopefully we see a butler special.

Being a bowler in T20's can be a tough gig sometimes.
It's a terrible gig really. You look at arguably the best test bowler of this generation, Dale Steyn, getting knocked all over the place and you think, who can really succeed like this? Bumrah, Cummings etc. all get whacked as well. Definitely a batsman's format.

Oops. Still feel this target is chasable is smith and samson play smart.
Definitely, especially as Smith looks very much up for it today. If he gets out I can't see it though.
