Anyone understand why we bought van de Beek?

Such a weird thread to make. You'd have a point if we were 10 games into the season and he still hadn't featured much, but this was our second league game. Looking at how exhausted our starting XI were at the end of last season due to a lack of adequate squad depth, it's clear he'll get plenty of games.

Exactly. The reason we aren’t signing a CB is cause Lingard can eventually grow into that role. Workrate and all that.

So with those two playing different positions, we needed DVB.
Yep. Lingz has the most important aspect needed to succeed here - youth.

We should have spent the £40m that went on van de Beek on finding a young energetic replacement/cover for Matic. The Matic role is vital in this team as it brings balance in the midfield and helps complement Pogba/Bruno. I think Donny is a good player, however I don't think it was wise to spend so much on cover for Bruno/Pogba, when defensively we're all over the place and defensive protection is needed from midfield.

He plays differently to Pogba. Can we stop thinking of a defined starting 11 and bench players please, it’s not the way a top club should work. You need to have 15+ top players that each offer something different in their position and play depending on the opposition. Pogba and VDB have different styles with Pogba being more direct and a bigger goal threat, and VDB being more solid, disciplined, intelligent and able to orchestrate our attacks.

If VDB is bought as one of our signings this summer to improve our squad depth, it makes perfect sense.

However if VDB is bought to be our only signing this summer, despite the fact we have more urgent need on RWF, LB, CB, DM, it doesn't seem to make any sense.

I hope this answer everyone question.

To have him as a back-up and rotational option for Pogba and Bruno instead of Pereira and Lingard.

Errrm so those mf-players we had on the field today were all better than him. Seems he's lower down the pecking order than Fred FFS!
He made a good run for a corner in the last seconds of the game. Something that our "better mf" should do after conceeding in the 95th minutes by Southampton last season.

He's a plan B for Pogba's contract situation, that's why we bought him. If Pogba don't signed the contract then VDB would be ideal replacement.

On the face of it we're overstocked in midfield but aside from VDB none of our options off the bench have the quality or attributes to fill the roles Fernandes and Pogba play to anywhere near the same standard. Worst case scenario he's great cover, best case scenario he gives Pogba a kick up the backside or eclipses him.

He'll be well worth the price in my opinion and I think that'll become clear very quickly if Pogba's form doesn't improve, or if he or Bruno get injured.

Not sure if this is serious? If it is then I don’t know where to start.

The thread only exists because we haven’t signed anyone else, or moved anyone out. We desperately needed cover at 10, and I wouldn’t be adverse to see Pogba covering the left channel if Rashford is rested.

To be a quality back up to Bruno/Pogba/Matic and not having to rely on shite like Fred and McTominay.

I guess we signed him because an injury to pogba or Bruno leaves us short of creativity in the middle of the park. The level we are at we need a top first 11 and a backup in every position.

My big issue is At the start of the window, to get our squad there, we needed two right wingers, A forward thinking central midfielder, a centre back, A left back and a defensive midfielder.

Cant all be done in one window but if i was only signing one i wouldnt have signed VDB first

Ole tends to stick with the same team as much as possible as he is apparently a big believer in players developing their strategies organically rather than being coached into routines. So VdB will have to wait for someone to play consistently badly or for a lot of matches at once.

In 2008 we had Scholes, Carrick, Fletcher, Anderson and Hargreaves despite the fact that we played 2 cm's most times. You need depth in a squad.

You people saying he was bought to replace Pogba if or when he leaves the club. Then why the feck did OGS bring on Fred for Pogba. Certainly this was an opportunity for him to come in.

Because we want quality depth. For example when Pogba is not in form like today, Van De Beek should start. But Ole being a bit weird, when his starters aren't medically unable to play he seems to have no intention to use other players.
Donny also hasn't really played full 90s minutes for a long time, has he? So I doubt he is Match fit too.

Though yeah, Pogba needs to up his game. He is looking lethargic. A 100% Pogba is much better than I think a 100% Donny

He has not played much, granted, but I have seen nothing so far in Van De Beek to think has the quality to make a difference to this team.

He has had an entire preseason and played full games for Ajax in August.

More than Pogba, I think he is a backup for Bruno, especially in a 4-2-3-1.

Ole mentioned that he would be playing closer to goal. And we don't have any decent option after Bruno at AMC

He’s an awkwardly decent player but will definitely fail to find his strengths alongside Bruno and Pogba. He likes to run into space. Not a holding midfielder at all. Will be one of oles worst signings
I correctly predict a lot of things apparently

Took me a few seconds to realise you meant midfielders when you typed mf

Because of tactics. If your intention is to shore up the midfield to defend a lead, Fred for Pogba makes a lot more sense than VDB for Pogba.

If we'd still been chasing a lead and were hooking Pogba off purely because he was having a bad game, VDB would make more sense than Fred.

What's the point in this thread?

We had about 3 threads last season mentioning that if Bruno get's injured, we're all kinds of fecked. We sign VDB and now there's a thread questioning his existence in the team?

This place is fecking bonkers on a match day. Brings the worst out in you all.

I think I get the point that's trying to be made, I just don't agree with it.

I mean, let's face it there might have been more obvious places on the pitch to strengthen.

But when the right player comes along for the right price...you crack on. DVB looks capable of deputising for either of our more attacking midfielders and offers us creativity off the bench or another option if the others are off form.

It works for us, but there are more important areas of the pitch that we need to be strengthening out first 11.

Think the simple answer would be quality player available for a very decent price considering the market value these days.
