He didn't play badly, that I can't deny but it's still a mystery to me how he started this match.

Ole's come off looking weak IMO

Was pretty good today. A damn shame he had to play next to the calamity that was AWB. I like AWB but Christ has his form fallen off a cliff.

I'm still not happy about him.

He doesnt hold that defensive position like a CB does. He doesnt know how to spread the defensive line wider by owning the area he covers. He invites the attack on his side all the time. AWB had a poor game, but I can understand why a RB would be playing narrow because the guy always ends up cutting in to make a tackle before Lindelof does.

I'm not saying Maguire is amazing either - but he owns the position he plays in even if he gets beaten occasionally.
Maguire owns his position, but its not a very exposed position as he has his square to defend and doesn’t have to cover for anybody else.
Lindelof did not bounce back. The right side of our defence was being targeted throughout the second half, which is why Ole went to a back 5.

No, Lindelof did not lose many 1v1 duels but there was no massive improvement. We just got lucky that Brighton kept wasting their chances. They found it easy to work the channel between Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka, which both were at fault for.

Those stats are okay but, really, you would expect any centre half at a top team (which we fancy ourselves to be) would manage that.
The reason we went 5 at the back was because AWB kept losing his position. That continued even after Bailly came on, second goal is an example of that. It’s the flavour of the month to blame Lindelof for everything but he did ok today especially considering how poor AWB was and considering there was no help whatsoever from the midfield.

Yup. AWB was the issue today.
Was he the only one?? It seems like he had to mark a player that suppose to be Lindelof's

And WTF Lindelof expecting AWB to sprint all the back to mark the one that he's pointing out. WHile then he's marking NO ONE. fecking laughable.

Even on this one, he's marking NO ONE with already 3 other red shirts covering his side. This caused AWB to get close to Bailly (there were thwo blueshirts there near the box center, which is more dangerous area).

Nothing wrong with either of those clips.

On the first one Lindelof has to stay central as Maguire has gone left. Fred is tracking back but there is a huge gap there that needs covering. The Brighton player should never have been able to get alone like that, whether it's AWB screwing up or he's not being coached properly.

The second one, as the LCB in a back 3 he is where he is supposed to be, positioned to cut out a low cross.

So nothing wrong with AWB on those two also then? Do you think nothing wrong expecting AWB to be able to mark that running player?

Nothing wrong with Lindelof. This is the Lindelof thread...

I made my feelings clear on AWB's current level in his own thread.

I don't rate Lindelof at all, but he's done the right thing in that second clip. Needs to shift round to cover Maguire otherwise the centre is wide open.

He’s shit and infuriates me. To think we had Rio playing that position all these years and he’s taken his place ffs

So was that AWB fault then? or just nobody's fault? Because expecting AWB to be able to mark that on coming blueshirt is brainless.

What bothers me is that we are discussing if he had a good game or not.. the standards have dropped to a level I haven't seen these almost 40 years I have followed Utd. The difference between turd and shit is?
Well what the difference is isn't important the important thing is that they stink.

Lindelöf the IKEA Malm dresser of defenders..
Both wobbly and fragile.

So who was he expecting to mark that rushing player behind him?

Crazy how different opinions can be. IMO he’s at fault in most of those situations. Absolute criminal to point at Trossard and leave him all alone when AWB is so far behind. Even if it’s AWBs guy to mark in the first place. But now when AWB is so far behind Lindelof can’t just leave Trossard alone like that. There wasn’t any player in the centre. Leave the running player in the centre to Fred and others. Or try to do something in between. Leave Trossard a little bit but not like that.

Other situations is also typical Lindelof. He simply escapes responsibility whenever he can. Completely unacceptable. He is what I call an alibi player. He seeks alibi to not have to do the dirty work where he can be exposed. Defensive corners is a perfect example. He is so bad at heading the ball so he hides away behind a group of players so he doesnt have to try and head the ball. He doesn’t mark players, stays away from the areas where he can be exposed. He is a cowardly defender in United. And he is playing on a level where he can’t cope.

Sorry, I edited my post but that bit still stands. I don’t how to post vids but it happens all the time. Not just corner, in open play he does that too.

As for the escaping responsibility, I think it's because he knows he's not good enough.

It's gotten him this far in his Utd career, so it seems to be working.

Yeah I agree. I edited the post and wrote just what you said. He is playing on a level where he can’t cope.

Don’t even know what that means. Sounds dirty haha. I actually used to defend him his first two seasons. Maybe because he is a swede like myself. There’s room for development I said. He can’t be that bad, he just need to settle in etc. But I’ve completely given up on him. He is one of the most overrated players ive seen.

I think it's sensible to bring up that situation with AWB because it shows his lack of awareness and his mind being lost. No way in fecking hell AWB was going to make up that ground so he should have adjusted.

Agreed.

To so quickly go over towards the direction of the ball was questionable. AWB was never gonna recover, it was Lindelof's job to defend the crossfield loft. Brighton only had 3 players in attack. Two were covered by Maguire and Fred. The other was for him to deal with.

Does Lindelof realise he plays for Man Utd? We need our fullbacks to be further up the field to support the attack. He's got to know how to cover for his full backs. Vidic and Rio often did, with help from Carrick. I swear the players we have right now are of such low standards.

That's second clip is damning.

Lindelof had the point re: trying to cover for Maguire and Fred, since they would be beaten for pace if a through ball played through. However, wtf Lindelof was doing? I meant, he broke the offside trap, which in turn meant there was little chance AWB would be able to catch up(why does AWB getting slower the longer he is our player?). Playing the offside correctly, then Trossard would be slowed down, and a bit further away from our goal.

Trossard was unlucky with the shot. He also had another option by squaring the ball across our goal. Shaw is terrible even if that option was not taken. Shaw pressed, then put little effort to track the runner once he got being put out of the way. Shaw has pace which is important since the closest positions to him are all slowpoke. He's supposed to to use his pace to track runner, but has a habit of just randomly leave runner be.

So individually we have bunch of terrible, mismatch defensive players (GK stuck on the line included), and also looks like terribly coached defensively. There is no discipline and plan for the defensive unit. Each individual does whatever he likes. Add individual mistakes on top, I don't know how someone would think this team would be the dark horse for CL.

Just look at that fecking picture, and I mean not just Lindelof, Shaw going into a block and being late, DvB casually looks like a bystander, but the biggest issue for me are Matic and Fred, just what the flying feck is that? What kind of defense shape is that? Look at that number 13 from Brighton. Shambolic staff.

It will be either AWB for getting too far forward or whoever is tasked with covering him when he is up there. I suspect AWB because when he looks over he dips his head like he knows he's supposed to be back there. Brighton did that on purpose, with both their forwards pulling wide to leave massive gaps in between. Lindelof was forced to stay with the player coming through the middle.

Oh that’s alright then, give him a new contract
Not saying that at all but people make out like he’s awful.

I don’t think we’ll win a title with him as our main CB but he is a very good one regardless. It’s unfair to levy all blame at his door where Maguire gets a free ride.

Our back 4 is absolutely good enough for top 4 but beyond that who is to say?

I’d love to see how a Konate/Upamecano would fit into this side but they would need time.

I think the midfielder should cover that and track his runner.
Perhaps. But it's not clear that Fred has his man covered. To be clear I think Lindelof is awful - heading, strength, mentality, positioning all lacking. But I think in that scenario it's a terrible team shape - both full backs out of the game, no one really sitting to compensate. Would equally look bad if he moves toward RB and the runner in the middle is put through on goal.

EDIT: I replied regarding that other picture that lead to the second Brighton goal.

Re Fred and that runner, I think he has to track that and if anything pressure him all the way to the end, not other option considering they are breaking from deep and the defense is caught out. Lindelof I feel would have done better if instead of pointing out to AWB to cover someone who he clearly has a lot of catching up, cover himself than going with the runner. Maybe I am wrong but my opinion. A specialist DM would cover properly in this situation if you ask me.

Lindelof hasn't been up to standard the last few matches, but it can't be an easy task playing RCB for United. AWB is basically never around to defend during counters. That means Lindelof has to cover a big area.
How often does Lindelof end up 1v1 along the sideline? Quite often.
How often does that happen to Maguire? Almost never.
I don't know if AWB moves too far too often, if he doesn't react when the play turns around, or why he's never around to defend. And on top of that his poor positioning and awareness. As I wrote, I can't be easy to defend next to him.

In the last match it was even worse because the midfield didn't work well together with the defence.
