Thought he was terrible today apart from the goal. Another player who for me demonstrates how far we have fallen, should be know where near the first team and would have been in previous years.

Good header for his goal. Got to be careful with the offside in those situations; bit fortunate one of their players dropped deep enough to keep Scott onside. Didn't need to run so early, ended up having to slow down before he headed the ball.

Otherwise a fairly quiet performance, played ok. 4 tackles, 1 interception.

Still needs dimension to his game, but he was the one who opened the score after our attackers had absolutely no idea how to break their defense in 1st half.

Crap, again, and a goal shouldn't disguise that. Hes making things harder for everybody around him. Needs to rediscover his early promise.

I don't think Mctominay would stand out if he played for Fulham, Burnley or whoever at that level. Can't bring myself to rate him whenever I've watched him.

He was one of the reasons why we were so terrible in the first half. Just refused to move into open spaces and causing Fred to or DVB to pass it back.

Honestly I can hardly remember a single thing he did besides the goal, which isn't great considering how lack luster the attack was for a lot of the game he should have been shining in midfield winning the ball or passing it around.

He's certainly not a 6, and it's a detriment to him to be played there. He's really just an energetic 8 that can pop up with a few goals, similar to a less technical, more physical Herrera. We really need another true holding mid so that he isn't forced in there with our current squad, but I like Scott and still think he can be useful.

Gets the blame for other midfielders poor performances for some reason, kept his game simple tonight was never out of position defensively and rarely gave the ball away, quite like the nastiness he adds to our midfield as well, needs to make himself available for a pass more though, especially if he is to play as a 6.

Agree with this. For me he is a classic 4-3-3 midfielder or a offensive midfielder in 4-2-3-1 which Pogba plays nowadays. Scotty is versatile, but I think he has to specialize himself towards one role in the midfield for the future to push for a more central spot in the team.. He is an honest hard working player with heart but without any standout abilities. A good squad player who loves the club though. Never underestimate that.

He looks bit lost at the moment, needs to be a rethink about what he is being asked to do or he’s going to find himself on deadwood list. Well taken goal and maybe that will give him something to build on because he’s been poor for a while now.

Did well for the goal, other than that he was fairly average on the balll and so-so defensively.

We saw when we didnt have Bruno yet that Mctomminay & Fred cant just play in midfield together in a double pivot and dictate the tempo of the game with their passing. It isnt good enough. Van De Beek is a CAM that plays football in deep positions rather than trying to open up gaps with clear passing.

What we did see was that when Bruno joined, the creative duties fell much more on the new signing and Mctomminay and Fred could play the double pivot to the balance of the team and focus on an energetic type of football that provides both a defensive game and a quick simple attacking one.

Guys like Williams, James and Mctomminay whilst needed in the squad this season, need to go out on loan next season. We have seen what happens to our local crop of players who forever stay on the periphery in the past. Lingard is a prime example. Although he saw alot of loan action early on, once he burst into the first team but as a benchie we should have found him a loan spell where he could get 40+ games into him. These youngins are coming to that age where even just a season for regular match hardening would do them the world of good.

I really want him to be tried as a Right back and see what he has to offer.
Lack of pace could be an issue but he is still faster than Dalot I guess.

Yeh. I didn't realize that he's a bit slow. And he doesn't win duel that much either, for such a big guy.

I think your right in the fact that Fred and McTominay in the double pivot are a good solid midfield pairing. Much tougher to get through than a Matic and Pogba combination, but not as productive/creative. I wouldn't have a problem with those two in the side, as long as two of Bruno/Pogba/VDB are in front of them, this would mean that we would have only two strikers up front. To me that would work as long as the two full backs were encouraged to get forward as much as possible.
I think that McTominay is another that really hasn't got going since lockdown, primarily because he's hardly played a game.

Good goal, grew into the game and generally looks back to some decent form. The defensive midfielder position should be put in the bin though. He's a solid box-to-box player, nothing more ,nothing less.

HELLO
Was hoping he'd push on and impose himself in possession more this year but he's so content not getting on the ball. You can't afford a player like that in matches where the opposition are mainly sitting in.

Absolutely terrible at the start of the match, then scored the goal and generally improved a bit. However he's far from being what we need.

don't players on that list usually get a long contract renewal with large wages?

Players like him are good to have. Loves the club and is an academy player. He should never be a first team player though, being from the academy and loving the club means he will be happy with being a bench warmer or back up to the first team. Won’t be on a mega wage and will give his all when given a chance.

So much dubious data in that list. Lindelof faster than Bailly?!

He might very well be at top speed, but, in terms of acceleration, no. Being fast is great, but acceleration is more important for a football match.

Lindelof may just be a very slow accelerator, so you never see him get to top speed.

It is like Fred is one of the fastest players in the team, but you rarely ever see it.

If I recall correctly, Shaw revealed how he is instructed to not exert himself in this specific speed test, instructed by the coaches as a precaution for his fitness at that time.

It's high likely Bailly too is being instructed the same.

Eh who knows. One speed test doesn't reveal everything, need contexts.

Him and Fred together are a very good midfield. I hope we get to see more of the partnership going forward.

Won't mind seeing a 4-2-2-2 formation with a double pivot of Mctominay and Fred with pogba and bruno axis in front of them as providers.

Add a couple of attacking full backs and we may have an alternate working system.

His defending positioning is as bad as AWB. Always get drawn to where the ball is, without any aware where the dangerous area to cover is, or if it's necessary.

My motm. Him and Fred are the only two who show fight and care, both were willing to tackle in the middle and trying to win every 2nd ball.

I don't rate McTominay at all, but at least if we play poorly we have an excuse with players of his standard in the team. He puts in the effort at least.

Say what you will about him but he has heart. Pogba is so infuriating when he is off his game it's crazy. With Scott u know what to expect.

I know some on here don’t rate him but I’d start him every game. He has the energy, heart, physicality and leadership the midfield misses.

No-one rated Henderson until Liverpool started winning.

I swear he moves twice as fast as Pogba, being of similar build. Deserves to start alongside Fred, I've had enough of Matic-Pogba.

I remember reading a big Reddit thread, based on research from the author Jonathan Wilson, which basically concluded that speed stats are absolute trash. Can't find the thread from a Google search, but did manage to find a post talking about the thread, with a passage from the book:
