No idea what sort of player he is but Luke Shaw saying the other day that you needed more signings and then you signing a left back for 20 million is quite amusing!
He said it after we were heavily linked with signing a leftback. He's fine with the competition. Slight possibility we might end up using Shaw like Arsenal use Tierney - left side of a back three - but doubt it.

Does anyone see the pattern here?

Same again, we refuse to pay whats wanted, another teams name is thrown into the mix (may be offered to City) and we suddenly agree a deal. Strange how that happens isn't it?
Maybe Dortmund need to offer Sancho to another club, or another team needs to slap a bid in for him to kick our arses into gear haha.

Still, am happy with this, big improvement on Shaw!

Telles will bench Shaw (hopefully)
Competition will be good but lets keep expectations realistic. New country, new language, new league, new teammates. I'll be happy if he looks good. Been awhile since we made gem signings for low prices.

Rojo was bought at this time to be a starter here, actually.
I was trying to say that €20m doesn't get you much these days.

But maybe van de Beek would have been a better example to show that we're not afraid to spend money on squad players.

Considering that we basically paid what Porto want from the start after a few weeks of saying we won't pay it, just shows clubs all around that we can be mugged no matter how much we posture.
The tweet above says we haven’t paid what they wanted and have in fact met in the middle. Which is what most expected to happen all along.

I imagine we
:rolleyes: Why does their always have to be some moaning?

Considering what Pep pays for fullbacks, it's actually a very good deal.
Didn't take long did it. People live to be miserable here. If we end up with VDB, Cavani, Telles, Pellestri + 1 more, it would be a very decent transfer window, but there will always be a problem.

Do you really think so?

Like I said, I don't know much about Telles but you surely are not paying 20 million for a backup left back?
I do but I rate Shaw higher than most. It's a big ask but if he stays fit, he'll remain 1st choice. There'll be lots of rotating between them though and Shaw could get many games as a lcb when we change formations.

A FB in the team who can actually deliver a decent cross? Tears in my eyes
Not to be that guy.... but we have turned many a player who used to be able to deliver the ball, into a player who hits the first man every fecking time.

See, Nani, Mata, Shaw, Sanchez, Di Maria... and so on

I honestly can't see Telles being just a squad option here. Maybe he'll start from the bench, but pretty sure he'll nail the position and start most games for us as the season goes on.

We do. The need for a LB has less to do with Shaw's quality but instead to do with his fitness record.

Can see Shaw gradually playing more often in a back 3 now possibly.
Yeah. I think this signing opens up playing three centre backs as Telles is so attacking he’d fill in a wing back role easily. Will also provide a bigger threat going forward against the deep sitting teams. Great signing

Good to see we might be getting him, hopefully he ends up as shrewd as getting Fernandes was.

Porto wanted 25 from the start.

Telles is a good player. An international player. He’s not some unknown gem. He’s a relatively well known quantity and I think he’ll offer more than Shaw even under all those circumstances (new country, new team-mates etc)

Phew! We would have been criminally short of viable full back options if we didn't get this over the line.

We'll see. If he makes the position his own, that's great. I'd absolutely love that.

He'll play ahead of Shaw. Plus probably rotation every game weekend/midweek. Shaw would get injured with too much football so I trust Telles to stay fit longer and with his on ball quality being far better, he'll beat him out.

20m because 1 year left on his contract! He's a far better left back than Shaw, far more suited to a big team due to his on ball quality. And he can stay fit. Shaw will rotate in, but Telles will become the starter imo.

Great signing and exactly what we needed. I just wish we would have done the business at the beginning of the transfer window, to put ourselves in a strong position for the start of the season.

So we hung around for a month saying that we won’t pay 20 million and at the end we still end up paying that amount to conclude this? Same happened with Bruno and this is pathetic.

At least Williams can finally switch back to his preferred side now as a deputy to AWB

He was so frustrating at LB
