Anyone watched the 'From Bedrooms to Billions the PlayStation Revolution' documentary? I'm watching it now and it's very good so far.

I am so shit at Warzone. I resisted it for so long, but am now drawn to being continual cannon fodder...

Haven't seen it but I wrote a short piece about a year ago about Sony's marketing for the PS1. There's lots of interesting stories from those early days.

In one of the marketing team’s early ideas, Sony infiltrated the UK’s club scene by using rest areas to demo the console. It allowed energetic ravers the chance to chill out on the racetracks of Ridge Racer and Destruction Derby. Over 50 clubs around the country were provided with these booths – including various Ministry of Sound locales. This helped the PlayStation brand to become synonymous with the futuristic world of electronica music. It was emphasised later with hit games such as WipEout, which featured in-game music by electronic artists like Leftfield and The Chemical Brothers. Sony even gave away free consoles to attendees at snowboarding and BMX events.

While the £300 price tag was high, word-of-mouth marketing eventually paid dividend, as did Sony’s use of round silvery objects that acted as its lifeblood — compact discs. Games like PaRappa the Rapper, Music and Vib Ribbon associated the console with high-quality CD audio. Of course it wouldn’t have been possible without the new-found ability to cheaply produce these discs. Costs associated with cartridges, such as those produced by Nintendo, tended to hinder production of more experimental titles. Cheap production meant Sony capitalised by becoming the home of more forward-thinking developers, which enlarged gaming culture as a whole. It also paved the way for rampant piracy – just ask my cousin Paul.

Of course, the decisive role of PlayStation became not just as a console but as a lifestyle gadget. It was a futuristic bit of kit that could play music and games equally. Something worth showing off to your mates. Sony took advantage of the marketability by associating it closely with adult life – something that still holds true today.

The Radovid quest in Witcher 3 should have had more consequences

The game is a masterpiece, but that one thing was handled terribly.

It has a major impact on the ending of the game but that is not exactly obvious if you don't know it. They should have shown that impact.

Started the Uncharted series recently and just finished 2 earlier today.

Having read the last few pages of this thread I recognize some of the encounters people struggled with, the sewer pillars in 1 is probably the only one so far that properly frustrated me. I actually beat Lazarevic second time around and only died the first time because he dropped me in the flames after a QTE.

I probably die in these games as much from launching myself off ledges trying to reach areas I think I can get to as I do to enemies

I'm jealous, those games were great for a first play through!

Wasn't uncharted an early PS3 game too? Like someone everyone was looking forward to when PS3 was announced? Don't have anything like that this time around :(

I'm looking forward to playing Little Hope at the end of the month. I really liked Until Dawn and although Man of Medan was disappointing that was more to do with the story/setting. Hopefully this one is a little more scary.

It's the first time I've done a franchise play through where I've gone from the first game in the series directly through the others. Obviously they're remastered but it's still interesting to see and feel the way the games evolved but also stayed very similar to the point it just feels like you're playing an updated version every 10 to 15 hours.

Yeah, haven't found it too bad so far but I'd say 1 was harder than 2 though that might just be because the combat doesn't feel as clunky in 2, plus there seemed to be more 1 shot weapons readily available in 2 so you could deal with waves of enemies pretty quickly.

Did many people here play Control? I picked it up on a whim the other week and it's surprisingly really fun. It's basically a third-person metroidvania with a weird and wacky story and with lots of pretty looking interiors. Difficulty is spot on - not too easy; not too hard. Though I'm bossing it now I've done most of the side missions and picked up all the good loot.

They're the guys that got loads of flack for saying the next gen update only comes with the Ultimate version, and the Ultimate version wasn't even out yet.
The amount of backlash it got must mean it's a decent game.

I played through it and thought it was decent but not more than that. I struggled to care about the story or any of the characters. Combat was pretty cool with all the destructible environments.

Didn't see that but looking now the Ultimate version looks pretty good - all DLC included.

The game was ropey as hell before I downloaded the patches (was getting 10 fps during explosions). I've seen a few reports saying the game was made with next-gen in mind and it makes sense.

Yeah I don't care about the story either. Gave it a shot but it never came together - I listen to podcasts while playing it.

The story in Control was batshit. But game was pretty good fun. A solid 7/10

The maze scene with the music was one of the best set pieces I've played in a game recently.
Yeah I got through it yesterday, really cool part.

Agreed but I wonder if I'm alone in enjoying these games more than better than more highly-regarded games?

Games like Control make me miss a time when I could just turn on a game, zone on and enjoy what it was offering whilst sitting back listening to a podcast. It doesn't require much thought power.

Star Wars: Fallen Order is another recent example.

Re-playing Horizon Zero Dawn.

I remember it being visually outstanding but I was somewhat indifferent towards the gameplay.

I've finally started playing Disco Elysium, which had been on my list for a while. Even from the first few minutes it's already clear this is going to be a very unique experience.

I didn't care for the combat, especially the bow. I know most really enjoy it, but it wasn't for me.

Great story though

I have a very decent gaming PC but I have been waiting years for Blizzard or one of the console manufacturers to put World of Warcraft on a console. Not a cut down version of WOW, or a new controller based combat system. Just WOW, via a keyboard and mouse plugged into a PS4, no optional dual-shock controls, just bog standard WOW. I feel exactly the same way about games like football manager,

The systems are more than capable of running the games and if the console platforms bought into proper mouse and keyboard support they would run just as well as they would on any mid range gaming PC. I know that Microsoft have played around with this idea a little bit, but nobody has really bought into it.

It wouldn't ever replace standard controller games on a console and I wouldn't want it to, but I think it could open up a lot of games to a whole new market of gamers.

They really switched up the way combat works and feels in Uncharted 4 huh? My main gripe is the flinch, added to the general feeling of less accuracy with most weapons.

Still it's a beautiful game and the difficulty on crushing has felt pretty spot on except for a few encounters (namely one part of the car chase, the mansion, and the ship graveyard which I managed to scrape past last night but not before calling the game all the names under the sun).

Gonna be a shame when they're all finished, might have to go back and do some trophies etc just to wring the most out of them.

Any of you lads play a PC game called Satisfactory? It's a first person version of the game Factorio with some enhancements.

Update 3 is only a few weeks away

It's nowhere near as good as factorio. It's decent, but only about 10% as engaging.

Oh I love it far more than factorio. Far more complex from an engineering and logistics perspective. Went back and tried Factorio afterwards and got frustrated by the clunky interface.

Am I the only one who thinks Okami HD is a little bit overrated ? I'm 20 hours into it and I don't see the massively appealing factor in its gameplay or story. It has been decent game so far, start was ridiculously boring but it improved over the last 5-6 hours of my playtime, but people seem to universally believe it's a masterpiece ?

Every game I've bought on release this year has been mildly disappointing. RE3, FF7 (good game, but was so disappointed with the ending), FF:CC and now Little Hope :( The first 2 were decent enough but I was more of a fan of the originals.

Next up CyberPunk :nervous:

Started playing MGSV again on the PS4. So fun, plus it still looks fantastic. Those textures on the mountains.
