Apparently we acted quickly on him because Lyon were making a serious bid for him and we outbid them at the 11th hour.

And Lyons scouting network is very strong in terms of finding quality young players.
Lyon had a 5.5M bid accepted for 60% with Peñarol keeping 40% and also letting him stay until January or June (can't recall but that was the main sticking point). We stepped in with the 10M release fee and all the % and transfer timing went out of the window.

From watching Uruguay internationals over the years, I have to think that their league is pretty physical so he should have no problem with that aspect in the PL

according to multiple news outlet in Uruguay, the release clause is USD$9.6M not EUR/GBP 10M
It's all USD, yes. But it costs us 10M, 9.6M is what Peñarol receive, can't quite recall who gets the difference or why (I would if I were getting it but sadly not the case).

Throwing a kid around the first team with the state we’re in could ruin him.
He's got Edi around though, he will be fine. Sooner or later you have to bite the bullet and now you have the best contention/safety net you could possibly hope for.

The kid mainly has to work on his end product, best possible scenario is that the guy giving him shit is someone he admires and who unquestionably has his best interest at heart. E.g. Ruud could have easily broken CR7, had he not been the complete freak that he was in terms of competitiveness and sheer will to be the best.

Good. Hope we give him a chance right away. Sink or swim. You can't always afford to cotton wool players. The alternate RW options are James, Mata and Lingard, so I have no issues with us seeing if the kid can do something. He can't do much worse than the others, can he?

These kind of signings excite me the most. We're always saying on here that we need to find more talent ourselves, before we end up handing over 70m to Dortmund and the like.

Good read, the part when the Lyon deal broke down really got him shocked up, but as they say everything happens for a good reason...
Would he be available for the Newcastle game?

Same here, it's far more satisfying to sign under the radar and watch a player become something special.

He’s a good signing for United. Watched a reasonable amount of him for Peñarol in the league and Copa lib. Stands out a lot at that level but the jump up to being anywhere near Prem level is massive. Potential is big for him though, I am 99% sure he will be heading to the youth team for this season though barring sporadic appearances for the first team maybe. Definitely worth the risk for such a low fee nowadays. Expecting more British clubs to adopt a similar strategy now with how high fees are getting once the players are in Europe.

i hope united adapt this strategy more aggressively going forward. If you can get in early on the right South American players it seems like some of the best value out there. You can still buy a potential star player for half the price as in Europe and the leagues are littered with players who could eventually do a good job as squad players at a higher level. We traditionally seemed to take punts rather than getting involved at the top end of the market. Hopefully this is a sign that we are going to go after young breakout stars more often. I know work permits have been a problem but maybe this will be an upside of Brexit where cases could be dealt with on an individual basis.

Pellistri, Mata, Telles, and Martial should be the "face" of United.

What do you make of him going straight into our CL squad?

I've literally no idea of the qualty of the Uruguayan leage, but that will be some leap if he starts making appearances against Leipzeig and PSG

He's gonna have to quarantine for two weeks as well, right?

Why are we in “turmoil”? Mentions it twice during the video! Are Chelsea in turmoil? Are Arsenal in turmoil? Are City in turmoil?

Utd are the perfect place for a young player to come and develop, the press are ridiculous at times with their agenda to put the boot into Utd

We're clearly in turmoil and have been for over 5 years. Arsenal was yes, Chelsea and City less so.

Fosu Mensah
Memphis Depay
Diogo Dalot
Daniel James

I think we tend to do well with young players from our academy once they break through, but have not been very good at developing young talent that gets brought in at the moment, the exception being Martial (and even he has serious issues).

Time to get him on those Messi PEDs. . .

Hopefully if he is thrust into the first team he’s given as long a rope as the likes of Maguire & Lindelof; we aren’t winning much this season & if he’s talent is there I hope he sees adequate first team action. More than happy for mistakes here & there from talented youngsters.

Without knowing the UK procedures, i would say yes, very likely
I'm not sure he does have to due to some nonsense about being in a football bubble (Cavani wasn't in one). I read an interview someone did at Peñarol saying United wanted him to guarantee them that Pellestri was in their bubble.

United is perhaps the club in the biggest turmoil relative to former glory and present ambitions. It’s not like we’re skint or have received a ban for financial reasons, we’re just lightyears away from where we should be.

Aha, that's good news, no idea how the bubble stuff works.

Kids tend to develop better in so-so teams rather than in dominant teams.

Regardless, United will have more good days than bad days this season. And Pellistri and Diallo will both get plenty of opportunities to shine and build character during those games.

What does that even mean?

Uruguayan players might not be the tallest or strongest around but they do play with pride and passion. One of the very few players I can think off who could go toe to toe with prime Keane was Paolo Montero. So I wouldn't be too worried about his lack of physicality too much.

turmoil

noun

a state of great disturbance, confusion, or uncertainty.

Yes mate, we are in turmoil  Chelsea, Arse and City aren’t, as they clearly have a basic direction and an evident plan on the pitch. I could tell you how each them play if you wanted me to. Can’t with us.

Strange because we finished above two of those teams last season and got to three cup semi-finals. I’m excited to see what we can achieve once we’re not in “turmoil”.

I don’t dispute things aren’t perfect but “turmoil”? Come on, it’s ridiculous. We lose a couple of games in a farcical start to a season after the players basically coming straight off their holidays to play football matches against teams who have been preparing since August and we’re in “turmoil”?

Two months ago people were queuing up to tip us to win the title! Why does it always have to be boom or bust? Why can’t the narrative just be “United are a pretty good if inconsistent football team? We know why don’t we...that wouldn’t sell papers or attract clicks!

And as for the club having no strategy in the transfer market, Pellistri and the 10+ other u20s we have signed for significant cash in the last 18 months would say otherwise to me.
