Fifa 21 is exactly the same as FIFA 20. I knew it was and just to be sure I reinserted fifa 20 to play it after playing 21 and my thoughts were correct. Usually there’s even minor changes but I guess with covid and with ps5 fifa 21 in the pipework not much effort was made with fifa 21 on the PS4. So they basically got the same game, changed the kits and updated transfers then released it as a new game.

What game mode are you referring to? I can say that Ultimate Team plays very differently to FIFA 20 - so far. What happens after the inevitable patch when people complain we shall see.

It’s ridiculously easy to score. I’ve only played a few placement matches in FUT but I’ve scored 19 in three games. And I have Jordan Ayew up front.

Enjoying Career mode for what it is.

Just had a tense CL game with PSG and it was 1 - 1 on 80 minutes when I got Williams sent off. I managed to score on the counter with Rashford in the 91st minute to somehow win it and some of the PSG defenders collapsed to the floor in exasperation, which was a nice touch.

Still a few typical issues though, shots being unnaturally blocked, auto CPU tackling 80% of the time if they are close to you. Same spaces in the same areas of the pitch funnelling you to attack the same way. There’s never a full back out of position or something like that.

I just play normal friendly matches against computer/friends etc. Never Actually delved in all that extra stuff .
So talking purely gameplay.....

I've played 5 kick-off matches in Legendary difficulty (4 in Competitive Mode, 1 not), and the gameplay is certainly different. The dribbling is much more reflective of a player's abilities and way more consistent (no random touches, no weird animations, etc.). The contextual dribbling has added more variety and made it less monotonous. The more-consistent dribbling also helps with handling the pressure against the opposition defences.

The passing is also less wacky; the number of flicks, backheel passes, etc., have been reduced, and the animations aren't as weird as they were in 20. However, the passing itself has gotten quicker. I've played a bunch of passes that have zipped to the receiver despite me not necessarily inputting that much power or playing a driven pass. Through passes have also gotten more consistent (good), which has made them easier to play (bad). However, if you position your defenders well enough, you should be able to defend through passes. Despite them being easier to play, the Legendary AI are mostly good at closing down through passes, so I did have to work harder to break them down.

The shooting animations aren't as buggy as they were in 20, either, and taking shots under pressure isn't as easy as it was in 20. The AI defending has also gotten more challenging, which is a good thing as scoring goals was a bit too easy on FIFA 20 in general. They close me down way quicker whenever I'm setting up for a shot, and they don't tend to ball-watch as much as they used to. Having said that, I did win one kick-off match 7-1 against Newcastle whilst using Man. Utd.

Final note: despite Competitive Mode being branded as a more challenging version of Legendary/Ultimate difficulty, the game actually gets easier. Every team plays the same way regardless of the team, and every player does the same thing in their respective roles. The game's more fun to play without that mode (and more challenging, IMO, given the varied gameplay).

I saw a few matches on Twitch. Every other move is a skill move which makes for very annoying viewing atleast.

1) Are most FUT games just spamming skill moves?

2) I am a casual player and will play like 3-4 hours a week max. Is it worth getting or will it be too frustrating as I can't invest any time learning metas or grinding for players?

It depends what division you're in. I won all 5 placement matches and now im placed well above my skill level and getting destroyed. The higher you go the more tedious the gameplay is. Check what divisions youve been watching

Would echo what other posters have said - higher up the divisions you go, it gets more skill based. So far, Fifa 21 seems very pace based. That might not be a surprise to many but after the shit show of last year, im finding it a bit more enjoyable. There seems to be more ways to actually attack as opposed to a singular meta like last year. Of course I expect it will change when they patch it but I’ll take anything after Fifa 20.

Hmm, can’t say I’ve noticed any of these differences... I’ll play it some more and see.

Been playing the Fifa trial there during the week. 5 games into FUT to place your division, 5 games won, placed in division 2. Think oh look that's nice they give you 125k for placing. First game in, up against Neymar, Mpabbe. Instant sweat. Done with FUT after 6 games.

Don't even get that enjoyable journey destroying people up through the divisions anymore. They've taken away the only thing I enjoyed about FUT

It's fine. It took a bit for me to notice the differences as well, but the first thing that stuck out to me was the slower, more consistent animations from the players. The last FIFA 20 patch made player touches and dribbles way too quick.

I've never played FUT before. I suck! My team sucks, what's the approach to building a better team? Play games, get coins, buy better players?
The game mode is set up to reward pay to win players. If you aren’t buying packs then it’s almost impossible to compete early on.

If you don’t want to buy packs then do squad building challenges etc

I stopped playing FUT about 4 years ago as it’s not worth the time or money you have to invest in it to get good players considering the game itself costs £40/50 and I don’t want to support a system that encourages gambling behaviours.

Cheers, I usually just play seasons but thought I'd give FUT a go...seems everyone is buying good teams and my free team is awful

Complete objectives, utilise the post-game coin boosts and play some Squad Battles on a manageable difficulty until you get the ball rolling. I’ve been fairly vocal about not spending cash on packs and I would encourage you to avoid doing so. Last year, without spending a penny, I had gotten players such as POTM Messi, Drogba and Roy Keane by Christmas and I didn’t spend a penny.

I would urge you to use a very basic starter team at the moment and complete as many objectives as you can whilst doing so. Squad Battles is a decent way of cutting your teeth and getting decent mileage out of your starter players, who generally have 45 contracts, as standard. Find a level you can beat easily and fill your team with players you can use to satisfy an objective. Avoid buying players for SBCs as much as you can. Really, you want to unlock packs containing players that can then be recycled and used in subsequent challenges. You’ll also build up some residual coins via playing matches, so you’ll find you can quickly accumulate 20-25k and that’s without hitting anything decent in your packs. Just check the price of everything before you sell it/use it in an SBC, as cards that appear to have no value can actually sell for a surprising fee, if the demand is there for it.

The early grind is my favourite part, really. You feel like every coin matters as you try to grease the wheels and get things moving in the right direction.

Thanks. Just played a ridiculous game losing 10-6 against a much much better side. The game didn't feel good, you could pretty much run past everyone and score...weird! I've also got 11k coins now and I have no idea how. Should I buy a pack with the coins?

Also my team are a bunch of bums. Some of them don't even have kit and seem to be in bibs

Never buy packs with coins, unless you have a lot of coins.

Have you done all the advanced sbc's? They give good packs and the chance of packing someone decent for this stage of the game is quite high.

No I'll look at the SBCs...it confused me because it looked like an empty team and not the standard team I got when I started the game.

I switched to back to PES earlier this year after about 5 years playing FIFA.

I've been really enjoying it but thought I'd give the early access of FIFA 21 a go cos I've got that EA Play subscription thing.

It's definitely backed up my decision to switch. I don't want to turn this into a PES v FIFA post but all I'll say is playing PES feels a lot 'freer' tactically and positionally, the way the players move compared to FIFA which feels more like table football.

The differences I can see from FIFA 20 to 21 are:
  • You can actually score from headers now
  • The players' first touch/control is better - but it seems like every player has the same animation (recieves the ball the same way)
  • It's very attacking - it seems as though you can get from one end of the pitch to the other in two seconds.

Was the 10-6 game online? If so, you can quickly see why online might be a bit of a stretch, as this early stage. Back in the day, you could hop on with your starter team in Division 10 and encounter people with similar teams, mainly comprised of bronzes, silvers and one or two golds. It was a simpler time and gave things a more "grass roots" feel. Now, with the Web App and willingness of people to buy FIFA points, most people have a super team from get-go. Like I said, for the time being you'd probably be best on Squad Battles to ease into things, at least until you get a serviceable starting eleven and three decent subs. Even playing on something like semi-pro can let you complete certain objectives and accumulate your coin boosts. Avoid the upper echelon of difficulty levels, mind you. Legendary and Ultimate. I have a FUT Founder account - been playing FUT for a long time - and they can just be plain annoying with how the AI can feck you. Not particularly hard to beat once you get the hang of it/work out the mechanics for the iteration, but they can slap you if you're not ready for it.

As a general rule of thumb, avoid buying packs with coins. As time goes on, you'll find there are other ways of accumulating packs that won't sap your coin total. The packs are generally shite, particularly the bog-standard 'Gold' and 'Premium Gold' packs. Avoid. The market will be a little crazy for a while now with it being release; however, in the future, if you have a choice between buying a player you want for, say, 20-25k or spending it on packs... Just buy the player you want. The odds of getting that specific player, or a more expensive one, are slim. Having said that, be cautious with the market in its current state. A lot of players that are going for big sums now will crash hard. You can easily spend 30k+ on a player now that will be worth less than half that in a month or so.

Think of SBCs as exchanging players in your club for a pack/reward. Generally, this is a great way of accumulating packs and building your club. No coin outlay and typically you can do it with players you have no use for. Or least most of them, with only having to buy one or two players to complete it. Now, of course, you want to be careful with what you exchange. If you have a player worth 80k, you're not going to want to include him in an exchange for a pack that contains 3 rare gold cards. Always keep in mind that if you do complete an SBC, the player cards you use to do so are permanently removed from your club. So, if you have a decent player that does well for you, it might not be wise to use him in an SBC.

thanks, this is really useful. I think I need to to spend some time learning the different aspects of FUT. for someone who has never played it before it seems very complicated to get the hang of without putting some serious time in!

I've never bought coins/packs with real money yet always have a competitive team. Just learn how to trade on the market if you want to compete; it doesn't take up much time really. After that, weekend league is where your team grows.

I’ve got a weird issue that I’ve not seen mentioned elsewhere. I’ve only played a few games, some as United & started a career mode as Villa but I’ve noticed that the replica shirts in the crowd literally only have the sponsors on, no club or manufactur logos.

Has anyone else had this at all? I’m on PC.

Me: Presses the AI as efficiently as possible.

AI: Passes the ball through the press with perfection every time regardless of player ability.

This is the kind of shit that fecks me off with this game. I’m controlling Greenwood, forcing the defender to go back towards his goalkeeper. I want to keep that pressure on, VDB and Cavani literally just feck off. So frustrating. Why are they backing away from goal??!

The game still does that thing where if a corner is headed back towards the original taker, your team-mates all feck off out of the box so you can't stick another cross back in. The AI clearly can't tell that the ball is going back to one of their players and acts like they've lost possession.
