Is Harry Maguire now in the same position as Beckham in 1998?

After the world Cup David Beckham was public enemy no.1 because of the media.

Now Maguire could find himself in a similar position.

Beckham was backed by United fans and the club and bounced back and repair his reputation.

Now Maguire is down in the dumps, has a funny shaped head and is playing awfully.

Is it fair to say he's in a similar position and is there any hope for him?

Big difference between a World Cup quarter final v Argentina and a Nations League game v Denmark.

Maguire isn't public enemy number one. He's a laughing stock and a another stick to poke United with.

Not my opinions by the way. Just the way he's treated by opposition fans.

What are you saying?
Maguire is a future galactico if we support him enough?

Not only are the situations not particularly comparable, was Beckham’s problem ever performance based? Quick google — we came second by one point in 97/98. Beckham got the most assists in the league.

In contrast we as a club are in a big tactical mess right now, and Maguire has been in poor form for a while. I don’t think he ever properly recovers from this, personally.

This is almost as remote as the SAF - Ole comparisons.

Maguire isn't public enemy number one. Beckham was attacked on the daily and had effigies of him hung. In contrast people are just saying Maguire isn't very good. There is no comparison to be had at all here. Everything that has transpired here has been Maguire's own doing, Beckham was made a scapegoat.

No, Maguire's just shite. Becks was hounded by imbeciles for one moment of petulance in what otherwise was a stellar career for club and country.

Exactly.

Beckham was loathed by moronic England fans for a single incident, in a single game. He was never criticised or doubted by United fans and he was playing superbly for the team at the time.

Maguire is playing badly and disliked more by United fans than he is by fans of the national team.

Chalk and cheese.

Beckham was a really good player who was hated for a stupid sending off in a vital World Cup game.

nobody hates Maguire other then United fans who want him out the team, rival fans laugh at him & banter us that he’s our captain & cost 80m.

Jesus christ, your brain actually came up with that this quickly? Maguire is an insignificant player from a now insignificant club as far as top level is concerned, in a «friendly» nobody cares about. Him getting arrested in Greece also falls in the category of «I literally couldn’t give a damn», other than just thinking he’s a fool of course.

Beckham was and still is a world-known person, playing for the best team in England and getting red-carded in an important championship-game. Haaaaardly the same.

Harry Maguire was 5 in 1998 and David Beckham is 45 in 2020.

So yeah, the same.

Sadly, I think you might be right. So much of sport is about confidence and if gets hit hard enough to shatter, not many players can piece it back together.

It many ways it's the opposite of Van Djik. He's a great defender obviously, but his initial form at Liverpool kind of mothballed into an invincible shield.

The Becks incident with Simeone was hardly a stamp. Just another Argentinian snipered on the pitch to get a player sent off.

Tbf when Beckham kicked Someone it was a bit "his own" doing too.
Let s not forget that Beckham and Maguire are humans and humans committ errors too.
And if we want to help him get back on track, us United fans should United and support him. And not celebrating his errors like ABUs are doing

Agreed. This is a troll thread but it will be a good day when people stop comparing current incidents with ones under Fergie.

Poor old Harry. It’s not going well for him but this is nothing like the Beckham incident.

Beckham probably thought screw you haters I’m a brilliant player with a brilliant club.

Not even close.

There is hope for him. This is huge lack of confidence including that his Greece adventure didn't do him any good.

Missed the tiny detail of Beckham being infinitely more talented as a footballer.
