He is a decent/average premiership defender. Going through a really bad moment right now though and looks utterly deflated and lacking in confidence. He isnt great but he is a lot better than his current performances suggest.

He needs time out of the team. Not because it's 'not showing faith' it's because he's a liability right now and it's actually good for him to not concentrate on football and try and get a mind reset for a bit
Yeah I think he needs to be honest with himself and admit he needs some counselling to help him through this.

I know that people will probably laugh at this but this has shades of when Schmeichel was going through a bad run in the autumn of 98/99.

Yes I will admit Pete didn't have the problems off the pitch then but Fergie had the guts to made the right call.

I agree that in the long term the best option is to cut our losses and get someone else in, however we can't do that now, is what I was getting at. We need to figure out a solution for the now, and deal with the long term solution when we can.
Right now I would say the best thing we could do is have as much protection around him as possible. He was okay in the back three for England at the World Cup, which was similar in individual quality to our defenders. If we carry on playing the same system, we're in deep trouble that's for certain.

This is a big test for Ole now. Protect your Captain and keep him out the spotlight for a few weeks or go to autopilot mode and be his fist name on the team sheet on Saturday.

Must be a few weeks out the spotlight surely.

It's clear the case in Greece and lack of fitness is taking a lot out. Court cases can eat you up inside.

I hope the club can help him mentally as even though he's not the greatest defender he's still a good one which we desperately need to get playing.

Everyone keeps saying Ole recruited we'll. But like Harry Maguire we have bought players because of what they did well at their various clubs but we now expect them to play in a different way. Leicester in their title winning season were never a team on the front foot, he was never left alone to defend one on one or had to cover too many times for his full back.

Yes he ventured forward well with the ball at times. But it's our own fault, just like Pogba looked good with marchisio and pirlo behind him. Bruno gets subbed for been outspoken, something we know he did at sporting as club captain.

Before he came here, he was always beside experienced veteran defenders (Evans & Dawson), and was never expected to lead the defence. What's happening here is he's been elevated above his actual level, those experienced defenders are not there and he simply isn't capable of being a leader.

It's not his fault we paid £80m, gave him the captaincy and expected something he had never shown in the past, but here we are.

Fairly sure 16th refers to the number of goals conceded, only four teams conceded more goals that season.
Yeah I know, I just didn't know it was that bad.

Fun fact in 18/19 :

United under Mourinho conceded 29 goals in the first 17 PL games (1.7 goals per game)
Leicester conceded 21 goals in the first 17 PL games (1.23 goals per game)

United under Solskjaer conceded 25 goals in the next 21 PL games (1.19 goals per game)
Leicester conceded 27 goals in the next 21 PL games (1.28 goals per game).

That first half of the season was not reflective of the quality of that back line because Mourinho was sabotaging it. Leicester actually went and conceded the same number of goals last season as they did in 18/19. So in reality we just signed a defender who's not bad, but doesn't really offer much above average for a WR fee.

He'll never be forgiven for costing £80m. It doesn't matter how well he plays, it's always going to be held over him so people can say 'I told you so'. This downturn in form has been the perfect chance to twist the knife.

That a player needs to be "good" to have our support is what's sad about it. Dunno, just really find myself having less and less in common with United fans these days.
Well said. Honestly think there's a massive gap between United fans and United supporters.

Have no idea what these "fans" get out of following football other then making both themselves and others around them miserable.

He didn't play for Leicester that season.

Unless he's really Robert Huth... Which would make sense now I think about it.

He’s out of form.

The idea that he was never any good is bollocks.

I wonder if he is captain material? Between the pressure of leading the defense because he is the oldest starter, we gave him the armband when he had no experience of playing for a huge club or even playing on the CL stage. I wonder if it wouldn't be a relief for him, if Ole gave the armband to someone else and ask him to focus on himself and don't worry about the rest?
No he's not and never has been, he has been desperately shoe horned into being a leader when he doesn't have it in him.

Schmeichel at the time was around 36 years old and was coming to the end of his career at the top level at the time. So it was understandable that someone in the twilight of their career would be showing signs of decline.

I’ve been an advocate for Maguire on here but I’m not a fan of emotionally fragile players. He needs to sort it out and quickly,
I wouldn't call him fragile. Guy dipped in form, everyone is going in on him around the world, and he just had a dramatic experience internationally.

Goals conceded in the PL when playing CB (have to be on the pitch at the time) since LVG arrived:

Maguire 47 goals conceded in 41 games

Bailly 40 goals conceded in 42 games approx

Rojo 37 goals conceded in 41 games approx

Lindelof 85 goals conceded in 76 games approx

Jones 67 goals conceded in 86 games approx (probably more like 82 full games given the number of times he has been injured fairly early in games)

Smalling 130 goals conceded in 121 games approx

Goals scored for United in PL when playing CB since LVG arrived: Maguire 1, Bailly 1, Rojo 1, Lindelof 2, Jones 0, Smalling 10

I just don't think he does well under pressure... You can see it in his defending, when he makes a mistake he generally goes into panic stations to try and rectify it.

You've clearly never experienced mental health issues going from this post, and it's probably one of the worst posts i've ever seen on this forum tbh, do you think his bank balance or how much his transfer cost was and value as a football player comforts him if he is going through a mental breakdown ?

We are not in the 90's anymore mate, the whole roll up your sleeves and be a man era is thankfully something of the past, i really hope to god you don't have kids, especially a son.

If he has mental issues then thats totally different. If he says that and needs a rest he will be supported .

However he is being criticised for his performances which are terrible and if he is letting that affect him then he should not be Captain of this club and should not be playing for the club either .

It's an insult to people who have mental issues if we are supposed to rally round someone who is just messing up in his job because of his own physical faults

Yeah very true but he does need taking out of the firing line for his own good, otherwise I worry he could go down a very slippery slope indeed

He is a better player than Bailly. Yes he is having a tough time now and maybe need a break but if I was Ole I would handle it by resting him and giving him a break. But on the other hand we also have very important matches coming up. If you need him to be ready for those you need him to play in the Newcastle game.

I hope the club give him all the support he requires because it seems he's mentally fragile.

The problem with him is that he's weak in 1v1 situations in a high line which is a huge hinderance for us as a club going forward. But I hope he gets all the support he needs so we can at the very least play low block football to a certain level which suits him.

I just worry about him being a total liability, just heard Southgate say in his post match interview that he has to tough it out. There was me thinking that Gareth actually understood mental health better than that

I'd bet Lindelof and Smalling's numbers take a huge battering because of Mourinho's half season. They were the two regularly being played while Mourinho was self destructing by coupling them with McTominay, Matic or whoever to make his point.

Edit: Just checked -

Mourinho's 18/19 - Lindelof conceded 22 goals in 13 games ; Smalling conceded 20 in 13.

He shouldn't be starting for now. The pressure the club has right now is too much for a player that already looks broken

As others have said, needs a break and some time away from the spotlight. There's nothing clever about pushing him back out there and risking breaking him even more than he is over the next fortnight.

Ole needs to be mindful that getting that wrong and fielding Maguire when he should be nowhere near the team could cost him his job.

Have to feel for Maguire by now. His only 'crime' is not being a top tier defender, which is not his fault.

Pretty sure we have had stats before for the minutes per goal conceded for all our centre backs after Fergie retired and Jones is comfortably clear of everyone else. Problem is the guy has never been fit.

We've seen this partnership. One is meek and the other reckless, neither is good in the air or has an ounce of leadership. It is asking for trouble. If they start as a pairing in a back 4 I predict we'll concede at least 3 goals on Saturday.
Which would be an improvement on our average goals conceded per game so far in the league

There is also zero shame /weakness if he did take some time off due to mental issues.... People with "normal" jobs get signed off with mental health issues all the time, I don't see why this would be any different.

Sad how petty some of our fans have become, mocking and making fun of our own player. Shit happens in everyone's life. Maguire is going through his bad patch, if you cannot back him then at least stop mocking him.

And it seems reading some idiotic comments some really want him to fail and are taking pleasure at his mistakes.
Yeah it’s all pretty ugly to be honest. Some fans take a lot of pleasure in seeing their own players struggle it seems. Maguire isn’t the only one either

Now all players make mistakes & if you look hard enough you could make a reel of Ronaldo missing chances but this nonsense that his rather marked drop in form happened suddenly is simply untrue.

Fans fall over themselves in a Maguire thread to make an excuse but god forbid a certain French midfielder have an off day.

He’s obviously better than he is currently showing but he hasn’t dipped in form from peak-Rio; he’s a decent CB who when isolated is a booking waiting to happen.

I want nothing more as a United fan then for him to come good but take off the United tints & we need to build a whole new defence around him to protect him which simply shouldn’t be the case.

Go through the performance threads for oppo players on here & the sanctimony in telling people to stop mocking him stinks. Infact head to the Bruno/OgS thread from earlier today where somehow Pogba [another one of our own players] caught flack in multiple posts. Have you looked at a Lingard thread recently?

When your defence of his pathetic displays is support our players you really need to take action for the whole squad or quite frankly leave the morals at your keyboard.

He’s been poor since Project Restart, the Greece incident has just exacerbated his decline in form.

He’s not as talented as Lescott was.
Jesse Lingard says hello.

Take it your caveat is aimed at The Pogba’s of the world.

Simply put, you either believe in blindly backing all our players or you do not.

Unlike Maguire a player like Lingard gets dogs treatment yet can point to having been pivotal in cup wins; this place is full of it.
Agreed with both of these. People pick and choose who they want to support.

A really sad state of affairs. I remember when we stood by cantona, beckham and even Rio after his drugs ban. Heck, imagine Maguire doing the same thing Rio did, fans would be baying for his blood, frothing at the mouth.
Yet people in at least one other thread are advocating sacking Bruno because he dared to get cross about the shocking performance v Spurs.

Remember when United fans used to rally around and support their players when they were going through difficult times? I liked it better then.
This. It's not like he's given up and doesn't care like Di Maria did. He's clearly struggling and needs fan to give the most basic support.

There's a lot to deride and get angry about at the club right now, this isn't it.

He's a lot better than he's showing. I think people saying he's shite or bang average are well wide of the mark, at his best he's among the best CBs in the league and had some very good performances with us last year that prove that. Like others have said though, he doesn't seem captain material at all and added unnecessary pressure to a mentally fragile player. The big question is didn't we pay so much because of his supposed leadership qualities, now he's not showing those qualities why on earth did we spend £80m on him?
