Is Jadon Sancho really worth the 100 plus million fee?

What happens to this guy for England?
It's just harder for wingers to shine in international games. Sane, Dembele, Sterling, Rashford (when he plays LW), M'bappe all performed a lot better for their clubs. And if you go back in time, it was the same for young Robben, young Pires etc.
It probably has to do with the fact that international football is more about getting the basics right and taking as little risk as possible.
It's unfair to judge Sancho just on performances with England

Is Maguire really worth 80 mil? Is Shaw worth the money we paid for an 18 year old? Has Pogba justified his transfer fee since he rejoined? The answer is no and it really doesn't matter since the market changed from 2009 (with Ronaldo's justified transfer fee) onwards. The only ridicilous transfer fee before Ronaldo's was a certain Zidane in 2001 ( within 50 mil pounds) and I think we can all agree he was worth the money. Between that time top quality players signed for some 20 to 30 mil pounds.

Good player but £120m would be criminal. I’m glad we didn’t pay it even though it was frustrating to read through the summer

The comments on that video are unreal. Who ever heard of a club trying to negotiate a favourable fee. Some are even ridiculing the offer for 90 fecking million. This Sancho saga has to be the most bizarre display of spoiltness ever over a non-transfer. Dortmund absolutely took the piss with their request and our fans are sympathising with it

Some of these looneys deserve the Glazers. They both have equal amount of understanding of how to run a football club

I miss how football used to be :( it just feels like such a different game now based purely around greed. It’s a business first i feel. Is any player worth 120mil? It’s so common now for players to be worth silly money that 120 million is the new 50 million. more and more players in the modern game are worth this or abouts and the reality of it is, it’s crazy money!

The Redcafe Sancho transfer thread was full of posters continually saying "Just pay the fcuking money" and abusing the club for not doing so!

A club refusing to sell a player for anything less than 120m just means they don't want to sell and price includes the inflated premium to change their minds. The elephant in the room is that if Sancho flops (due to quality or injury), it would leave United in dire straights. This automatic assumption that Sancho will come good has all types of red flags. The one saving grace is his marketing ability, which is all but eliminated due to COVID.

So, no, he's not worth that price, especially during these times.

Our main target should be Haaland. He is what we need most. He was reported to have 70 mil release clause next year. We should go all out for him instead of Sancho.

He's not "objectively" worth 100 million, and arguably no footballer is. But since Neymar's transfer to PSG, about six or seven players have moved for similar or higher fees.

Out of those players, you could argue that Joao Felix and Ousmane Dembele are most comparable to Sancho's "market value", and they both sold for more than Dortmund's asking price this summer. Now is that because they think he's worth less or because they've taken the pandemic into account? Who knows, but I don't think it was an unreasonable demand on their part.

That doesn't mean we were stupid not to meet it. It's perfectly fine to exercise caution, especially with our transfer record. But it does mean we shouldn't talk a big game about attracting the best players, because the reality is, other clubs don't just "dream" of making this kind of deal, they actually actually do.

I don't necessarily disagree with this line of thinking but the club were the ones that maintained the pretence that a deal could be struck by not drawing a line under it and by not getting anything else sorted. Everyone knew back in July that Dortmund had a firm figure in mind and a firm date. The fact we appeared to keep going until the last day with various restructurings speaks to the level of incompetence we're dealing with and that incompetence of the way the club is run understandably elicits a sense of frustration among fans. Spending the last few hours of deadline day getting 4 deals sorted is testament to how slapdash the entire operation patently is. Basically, it's all a bit of a joke. A big portion of the fanbase included.

Sancho is far more proven and has shown higher potential than even those two did, IMO. And he's English which means that he's generally worth more than other nationalities. I think 120m is a very fair valuation and the only reason it was ever on the table was that Dortmund had a gentlemen's agreement with Sancho that should allow him to move for a reasonable fee. If the situation was the same as with e. g. Dembele I think he'd have moved for over 150m this summer.

That being said, I don't think any club relying on organic revenue could pull such a deal off this window. However, Dortmund seem to believe more clubs will be able to next window so it makes sense for them to insist on their price.

If we sign him, unlike Maguire, Shaw etc nobody will be talking about the fee because of how great an addition he'd be.

He's definitely not good enough to still be going on about after we've already not signed him.

Rashford recent England record (qualifiers and Nations league) is actually good and been similar to United contribution.
Sterling Euro qualifying record = 15 games, 10 goals, 13 assists,
Mbappe has a solid international contribution.

generally they have a smaller sample size so they are usually worse off

What do you mean, if the situation was the same as Dembele he would have gone for £150m? When there was only one club interested in him at circa £100m?

At ole hand? Nope

At pep? Maybe but he doesnt need him

Going to united now is a bad move for sancho. His development would be stalled and even if he might still shine he'll missed out being coached by a proper coach in a proper system.

He's still young anyway. He can wait 2 more years

Considering how the two transfers mentioned have gone, probably best we didn't follow suit.

That's a different topic. I think it's definitely debatable if transfer fees in those spheres make sense. On the one hand, the past 15 years have been completely dominated by the clubs who had the two best players in their teams so it makes sense to spend big if you can sign a likely future Ballon D'Or winner. Then again Bayern and Liverpool have proven that you don't need to pay those crazy sums in order to stay competitive while the big money transfers in recent years have almost universally flopped.

Any way, you can't really argue the way you do in favor of the club if the very same club has overpaid on so many occasions in the past. If your officials think 80m for Maguire is a fair price then I don't understand why 120m for Sancho is too much in their eyes. In the pre-Corona market, Sancho should've been worth somewhere around 160m € while IMO Maguire should've been ~50-60m €. Very strange evaluations.

why do you think its way off ?
He's not the finished article and has an awful lot to prove. Clubs finances have been massively affected world wide, so it's pretty obvious player valuations will suffer as a result. Obviously Dortmund didn't want to sell, so priced him out of any move. Had they been affable to selling him he'd have gone for 20 or so million less.
Looking at our 2 wingers purchased, his shot at joining United has passed, we're going to develop our own players.

I'm glad the club didn't listen to them. I swear people aren't paying attention to what's currently happening with the economy. United makes money at the moment, but they also have huge expenditures.

I don't think he is worth that much. I've always maintained my position that the club should not do these transfers until we have a solid football foundation.

My problem was not the failure of signing Sancho, but the failure of signing players for the required position before the season started. We could have had better overall preparation of the squad and try to figure out how to work around the circumstances of this anomaly of a season.

Pretty sure folks would've said the same about Pogba before reality hit
True. But Sancho would be better for us imo. I think he'd prove not to have Pogba's tactical and focus issues.

Every player is different. City heavily overpaid for Sterling according to pretty much everyone. Livepool did so for VVD too as he had proven feck all to justify that fee.

Shouldn't there be a simple vote to put this story to bed? From what I've seen the majority would say 'yes'.

he was never even marketable. He’s had zero impact on the international scene

everyone knows what Beckham looks like, or Giggs, Cantona, Pogba and now Rashford. I doubt any non football fans will have even heard of Sancho, let alone be able to pick him out of a lineup.

he would only have been marketable because he plays for Man Utd, not because he’s Jason Sancho.

im not saying he’s not a good player, but doesn’t have anywhere near the profile to have any impact on marketing at Man Utd.

The thing that makes it frustrating is the fact that Dortmund were privately and publicly stating what they want and when. So instead of moving on, we wasted time, and didn't get anyone for the position. That's why people are saying just pay the money. If you have your heart set on the price and player, and the selling club does not want to negotiate then what is there to do really? When has the club won a transfer war by 25 percent give or take?

Telles, apparently Porto who had been insistent on a fixed price all summer caved to our offer. For what it's worth I also thought we should have moved on from that deal and was surprised when hardball worked.

Yeah we should have moved on from Sancho way earlier but it's somewhat placating that we eventually did and am excited to see what the new signings do. Dortmund can do one if they think anyone is paying more than what we offered. It was already a very generous offer

If Diallo becomes half the player that everyone seems to be convinced he will do, then we'll look back on this and say United played a blinder

I somewhat alluded to this in the matchday thread about the England match and got shouted down, but at this point I’m not really seeing a 100 million plus player, and I’m not entirely sure that he is what our team needed at this time.
What you need is to get rid of Pogba and Matic - and then get yourself a quality CM duo. You ought to be able to easily do this for less than the mooted £108m price for Sancho.

You have good attacking options. It's CM that most needs fixing - and doing this will also help reduce the pressure on your defence.

That’s preferable to trolling a Dortmund transfer subreddit when we hadn’t completed the transfer... Embarrassing.

I've never been one to care too much about how much a club pays for a player. That's their call. The big clubs never really suffer too much from transfer fees anyway. I'm more interested in whether the player lives up to the hype at the new club. Like I mentioned on another thread, I can't shake a bad vibe about Sancho. His hype is that of one of the best players on the planet. But having watched all his England games and seen him in the Champions league, there's a good argument to be made that he's a bit overrated. Of course we'll have to see when he leaves Dortmund to see how it pans out, whatever his next destination is.

Hysterical morons were insufferable during the transfer window, especially on social platforms like twitter etc.

All those idiots who went on disparaging the club because they weren't stupid enough to pay 120m to Dortmund. After watching all these clubs get fleeced paying 100+ millions the past few years to then quickly see their investments wasted why would any club be willing to fork that amount easily.

Dortmund have already fleeced Barca and I'm glad we weren't dumb to play their stupid game.
