We looked like a completely different team compared to our previous games, played really well, created lots of chances and fully deserved to win by 3-4 goals. I was pretty confident we were going to win even as the minutes were ticking down there in the end and I can't even remember the last time that happened.

Important result this. Ole now has a 3 month period where the focus is off the board and he can change the mood around the club - and this was a good start.

Tough week coming up with PSG and Chelsea. He needs to win both to build some momentum. Unfortunately, the poor start to the season has us playing catch up from game 4 onwards in the league. We need to avoid that situation in the UCL.

This win didn’t give Ole anything close to a three month breather. Wins against PSG & Chelsky will give him some breathing room, but he’s not free & clear from criticism by any stretch of the imagination. These next few games will be interesting & absolutely critical to multiple fronts of the season.

Here to defend McT

Also.. shit start.. controlled it after that.. deserved the win..

De Gea save was incredible at a crucial time.

I like VDB.. should get more minutes.

Mata is a beautiful human person.
Before our 4th goal McT runs back when barcodes attack. Intercepts. Resists clattering. Ball falls to Bruno, who passes to Rashy. Pogba doesn't run back with speed to defend like that.

I doubt we'd have gotten that Bruno goal if Pogba had been on the ball instead of VDB. That first time pass was perfectly weighted.

Or Pogba instead of Mata.. it was class from all 4 actually: VDB, Mata, Rashford and then Bruno for the finish obviously ! Have seen that goal 10 times already, probably our best team goal in several years.

I was glad to see the team trying to keep ball at the half way line rather than dig deep trying to stop the opposition. We are much better at the former than the latter and we even got a couple of goals as a result too.

VDB needs to play, regularly. This 'balance' argument is weak. Play the man! Is he shit in training? Feck me.

I know we scored three when Pogba was on but over all we looked better without him. A few times our play noticeably stalled when the ball went to him whereas we moved it so much quicker without him.

McTominay had a great game too and van Beeks first touch is so good, basically he doesn’t need two touches of the ball and that doesn’t half help us to spring upfield at real pace.

Disagree. Pogba pushed passes forward and found outlets quicker and he made runs into the box which I thought were good. His downside was tracking back.

Sure a few times play stalled with pogba, but i feel its an over exaggeration compared to his teammates who cant make the passes he can.

Bruno was very poor throughout the game, but give him 5 minutes to shine and he can make 3 goals. I was screaming for Ole to sub him off for vdb. Luckily he stayed on.

That's not what I said. Read the post again.

I'm referring to 3 months when the incompetent board is not in focus because of the transfer window being shut.

McT had a really good solid game, didn't put a foot wrong and surprisingly pretty good with his passing. Fred was decent but a bit too sloppy with his passing. First time we had an actual midfield for a while. Whenever News had the ball for a counter attack those two chase and hassle the shite out of their players. Can't help but compare to Matic Pogba when opponent players run free through our midfield.

A good solid game and really happy for Maguire.

All the ones moaning about Bruno. It is easy to get great passing stats if you are playing short safe passes in the middle of the pitch. Bruno takes risks and tries to make passes that will hurt the opposition. He will produce even on an off day. I wouldn't change him for the world. Did Bruno take the corner for Maguire's goal and didn't he make the pass for Rashford's goal, so shouldn''t he have two assists. He had a brilliant goal disallowed and a penalty saved. Would people be moaning if he had got a hattrick?

I thought Bruno was decent throughout, him and Mata looked one of our best combinations in a while. We look a bit lumbering in there with Pogba and Matic. McTominay really impressed me and was one of quite a few who had his best game in a long long while. With Cavani ready to go it does, all of a sudden, look quite exciting.

Agreed, mctominay was very good, and I think if we play a pressing style of football Fred has to play!

Happy that the boys got a win, plenty of room for improvement. A lot of passes underhit and players having to retrieve ball, hence not in full flight when attacking. Bruno sometimes frustrated as team mates appeared a weebit off his pace. Will take the win though and onward and upwards.

I agree. He wasn’t faultless but was basically at the heart of most good stuff we did. If Rashford‘s goal had meant something, in terms of deciding the game, then that pass would be talked about for days. His goal was brilliantly taken (as was his disallowed one). One thing with Bruno is he doesn’t hide, a proper footballer.

I’ve got some catching up to do. I fell asleep around the 60th minute and thought we’d been smashed 4-1 when I glanced at my phone when I woke up.

Not here to shit on him and he contributed massively to the win but he does inexplicably mess up short passes too often for my liking. He seems to have a habit of under-hitting them. If he only lost the ball when trying something risky to open up the opposition that would be a different story.

It's not easy to tell a great deal from MoTD highlights and while there were some good performances, it's clear Newcastle were almost as bad yesterday as we were agains Spurs. They left huge gaps and their defence was all over the place.

Listening on the radio, I had a strong feeling Bruno would miss the penalty but as soon a he did, I was equally as sure we would get a winner (and that he might score it) and once that happened, I did expect Newcastle to fall apart.

Good performances from Mata and Bruno, one top-class save from DDG and a useful all-round performance from Scotty Mc T were the highlights for me as well as Rashford having his best game in ages.

Clearly we are better going behind in the first few seconds than going ahead almost from the start! :D

Do I think our "season starts here" as Ole said, well, I'll take some convincing - we have to pick up something against Chelsea next weekend (I don't expect much from the PSG game to be honest; we just have to hope everyone gets beaten there).

One more thing from MoTD highlights: James' name was mentioned once - I have no idea why Ole started with him and not Donny but he was right to leave out Pogba who, to me, slows everything down and is a liability

It was an important win albeit Newcastle were a poor side, this will build confidence.
Im glad Ole dropped Pogba (although behind the scenes the fact that they have activated the 12 month add on to current contract now probably means they or he dont want to extend the contract past that and will be gone in Jan or summer). McTom in his place protected the backline and mainly stopped Newcastle breaking.
Mention to De Gea who had a good game as well. In fact no one really had a bad game. although Lindelof was lightweight again a couple of times.
Saying that we cant sit on our laurels as 2 bad performances results wise against PSG and Chelsea will have us back to square one.

If we can beat Chelsea we will go ahead of them. Then we will see who is under pressure.

Good win in the end.

It looks like the league is wide open this year with no outstanding, dominant team at the top like previous years. If we can get our act together and put together a run of 5 or 6 wins we'll soon find ourselves near the top with something to fight for. Obviously, that's a big if with this team but let's live in hope!

Cracking to see a team performance with plenty of running off the ball. Superb result. Build on this boys.

Yeah it's going to be really close. Liverpool have already dropped five points and they ran away with it last year.

The aspect that I'm happiest with isn't even the scoreline, it's the 28 shots we had. That's the most of any team in the league this season.

When was the last time we had 20+ shots (on/off target) in a match, let alone 28.

Hardworking performance, made possible by not starting both Pogba and Bruno.

Fred and McTominay are vital squad players

Exactly, Win our game in hand and we are only one point behind Liverpool and that’s surprising given the “crisis” we are in.

Pogba always seems to turn it on when he comes on as a sub.
Well yeah, thats because the opposing midfielders are tired and he does not have to run about as much, has more time on the ball (does not get closed down as fast as opposing midfield players are not as fresh).

Has anyone asked why the Fernandes penalty wasn't retaken? Goalkeeper was half a foot off his line!!!! Knew there'd be no consisteny in that bullshit rule.
Others have answered, I actually thought his back foot was a couple of inches off the line just as was De Gea, though as the distance was so little De Gea should not have been penalised just as Newcastle keeper wasnt.

Mata is brilliant whole match. MOTM.

DDG what a save at 1-1.

Rashford best game since the covid restart last season.

Bruno passing and link up play was bad all match but what a goal and assist at the end.

James look like a new player and need more confident to have end product.

AWB what a goal.

McGuire good header and very solid in defence.

Fred, McT, Lindelof, Pogba, VDB all look good and sharp.

Most importantly, finally we are able to play as a team. The short one touch passes all over the pitch from our players are a joy to watch. This is the fist time I see we play like this. Usually, the players will take a lot of touches before they pass that slowed down the game.
At last, after reading through alot of people posts I couldnt understand how fans could not see that some of the football we played was sublime.

Some of the one touch pass/move combos resulting in quick, precise interlinking play meant that Newcastle could not get close to us. So many commenting how Newcastle were "crap"and "its only Newcastle" etc not taking into account that it was the manner we played that made them look so lack lusture.

In most football matches, the team that control the midfield controls the game and it was evident we had a functioning midfield, this was the base for win and the base for some of the beautiful football we played.

Some of those combos, if it was any other team other than us, the media and fans supporting those teams would have been salivating over them.

Just the state of affairs as is, the media dont want to praise us and alot of people on here are doing the same.

I am looking forward to the next match, interesting to see if we can start to build some momentum.

Easy to judge from the outside, we just got to trust those on the inside who see the players week in week out to make the right decisions and support those decisions even when they dont come off as there will be reason those decisions are made even when they are not clear to us.....

The last couple of games the same thing happened: Every time VdB comes on things start to roll. People don't rate him but he's a linkup player, connects different parts of the pitch and works his ass off. Please let him start next match

Great performance. Those are the application levels we need, every game.

Best goal I've seen from us in two years, that Bruno goal.
Not as good as his volley from the Greenwood cross last season surely?

Who doesn’t rate him?

We didn’t buy him to bench him for the season. He’s been integrated into the team slowly. He’s also started the cup games and played really well. Expect him to start soon enough.

Pogba also looked sharper for coming on too.

That was class but to fade the ball into the top corner from a tight angle and after a super touch was
Not to mention the whole passing and movement
