It's a bad tackle, nothing more. Should be a 3 game ban.

Presumably he'll get zero as they checked it with VAR already.

In this day and age, a 'tackle' that would've been disgusting in the darkest eras of defending, should warrant a lengthy ban.

The picture still of the incident is tamer than the video - it was a true potential career ender of an assault.

In your opinion, what should Pickford be getting for this? In addition, what do you think he'll actually get?
Along with a lengthy ban, he should have got a good hiding.

Let's await the news first.
A cruciate would be worse than a broken leg in recovery, if not in instant pain.
True. Just a broken leg always looks a lot worse and can only really be caused by force. Players do their ligaments without any contact on times.

Really wouldn’t fancy either.

It looks so bad from the stills that I can't bring myself to watch the video :nervous:

Hope he recovers quickly.

As much as I think van Dijk is a smug cnut who needs putting in place, that tackle was an absolute shambles and Pickford should get a retrospective red card ban for it.

I think it's clearly accidental. Pickford is going for the ball. It's still reckless and dangerous, though. I'd say a five-match ban would be fair.

Actually, an ACL tear is not that painful. There’s an initial searing pain, but it goes away relatively quickly. Broken bones are much more painful for a longer duration.

Is this incident not able to be retroactively punished like other incidents not adjudicated during the course of play?

But you can't play for a long time with either.

Pickford looks incredibly stupid.

I could be wrong and for all I know he could be supremely intelligent, but just looking at his face, he looks dumb as hell.
Agree. Looks like a complete mouthbreather.

It is a mystery that VAR did not send him off, but since the refs saw it during the game no more will come of it right? I would be really surprised if he ends up getting a ban, even if he deserves one.

True. Most can’t. John Elway, one of the best QBs ever, played with no ACL. There have been some others who have played with a torn ACL, but it is very tricky & another knee blowout is always possible (Robert Griffin III immediately comes to mind). Haven’t ever heard of a similar success story in soccer, though.

There's always been a grey area on this sort of lunge if it's the keeper. There probably shouldn't be, but it has always been the case.

It was dangerous but completely unintentional. He was trying to smother the shot.

Watching the game, my thought was that if it was onside, it was a clear penalty but a red card never even crossed my mind at the time. Mainly because keepers have got away with that type of lunge for years.
The fact that he was going for the ball shouldn't matter one bit. Richarlison also went for the ball.

It was reckless, out of control and should have been punished.

Remember the goalkeeper played on with broken neck. ( Bert Trautman)

It's a rash challenge, he came out and VVD got their first. If he stayed back he would be criticised for not coming out.

It's a red card and 3 match ban although horrendous it was I don't think he intended to foul VVD as it would be a penalty had it been onside

It’s clearly accidental, just incredibly reckless and dangerous. It’s a straight red & three game ban for serious foul play.

If one can stomach pain & if the fracture is in a non-load bearing bone, one can play on a broken leg or arm, it just fecking sucks. The issue with ligament tears is that the joints lose stability & the possibility for further injury is very high. VVD was in minimal pain when he walked off. True field, but there was no chance of him continuing playing once his knee was checked for stability. If it was a hairline fracture somewhere in his leg, he conceivably could have continued.

It depends whether the ref saw it. If he saw it, then you can’t take retrospective action.

if the ref missed it, then you can take action - and a 3 match ban would be appropriate.

there is no precedence for anything other than a 3 match ban.

It’s a horrible tackle to be fair, Pickford is a really reckless guy.

I think a 3 match ban though.

VVDs career is potentially ruined as a result. He may never be the same player again if his cruciate is in fact done. He is almost 30 and just might not be as good after this as he was before.

I think a message needs to be sent out to players who engage in this brain dead cowardly type of tackling. 6 game ban should be the very minimum here, I'd be in favour of 3 months however. That would make him think beforehand in future. Doing nothing (no ban etc) will only encourage him to continue.

It was a cowardly tackle as he is a keeper and should be going with his hands for the ball not a scissors type leg breaker.

If he did this to say Maguire or Greenwood, we would be rightly furious.

Red card without a doubt.

If that was one of our players being hacked down everyone on here would be livid. If you honestly think that's a yellow then you need your eyes testing.

I agree with you Virgil might not be the same player after this, which is a pity because you want to see the best players performing at their best even for a rival.

Pickford would need to give VVD a public apology as well but I don’t think he would.

It was really bad from Pickford and much worse than Martial touching an ear and getting sent off.

Our team too have been kicked around the park many and many a time with no defending by the referees.

But, as regards to Pickford, it was a terrible challenge (clumsy maybe) which could have ended VVD's career and these things shouldn't happen, so hit him with a three game ban.

This goes for every player in similar circumstances.

Not sure I get your point, its a red too, probably not making contact is the only thing that saved him, but that's clearly a red.
Reckless and out of control (same as Pickford)
If you are leaving the ground with both feet and making contact half way up a players leg its a red, there is no debate on that
My point is that he escaped a red and calls for a 'ban'.

No they didn't, apparently they only checked the offside. Incompetent as always.
I could be wrong but I'm assuming VAR didn't call this out as this happened after VAR had deemed a Pool player offside and hence everything that happens after the first foul (i.e, offside) is no longer under VAR's jurisdiction. Is this right? Because otherwise I don't see how that isn't a red card after VAR has looked at it.

Gruesome attempt at a tackle. He should clearly have been sent off. A retrospective 3 match ban should be coming his way too.

One thing, during the game I had assumed that it was ignored as the game was called dead due to offside, which I thought was ridiculous. Did VAR really just miss it altogether? That's shocking.

It was explained in the studio. That the fact it was offside, or if the whistle was blown has no impact. It doesn’t mean you can then do what you like afterwards.

It’s that the ref and VAR completely missed it.
