Sucks for them and him. They still got Alisson to come back though, who is also a stability factor. The league is more open for sure, world class CB, even if he struggled lately.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the furore over Pickford? It's a pretty shit challenge but its a goalkeeper going with his feet trying to close down a shot. It's not an outfield player tearing into someone. Keepers often clatter people like that. It's reckless but jesus you'd swear he tried to do his ACL
Yep, the outrage seems to be down to the extent of the injury. Plus obviously not getting a red card.

If he gets a red, then no-one starts making all these silly calls for 5-8 games etc.

Unfortunately you can get a red for tapping someone, like Martial did, or for utterly annihilating someone. It's not balanced.

No to both obviously? What a weird little post.
Just thought it was weird to call it "sensationalised" when it had started leaking out almost immediately that it was an ACL job.

Then remembered your continual certainty on Sancho

To be fair it was only Richard Keys who said it at that point from what I'd seen! Seemed weird to see so many people believe what that mug had to say.

As for Sancho, the future only god knows.

Recover well. Glad Liverpool suffering from a major injury though, if I’m honest.
It's an awkward one to word, as we all want Liverpool to lose.
But you don't really want them to have serious injuries, unless you're a bit of a questionable character.

They've had an insane run of luck with injuries, but that's certainly ended big time with this one. This is huge.

That is true, and he has had some mad "scoops" before.
But this one seemed to be pretty likely.

What a disastrous game for Liverpool.

Just as long as someone steps up to stop them winning the title - imagine how they'll be if they still win it without Van D!

Maddock saying it's the worst tear possible. Might be VVD done at the highest level.

At least he got to win the big trophies first.
If that's true it's pretty awful, never nice to see world class players suffer such injuries no matter who they play for.

Personally hope he can get back to full fitness one day even if he is a scouse cnut.

It's sweet that everyone is wishing him well as I'm sure the scousers would be clambering to wish our players well if they were injured. I remember them giving Alan Smith a good send off when he broke his leg at Anfield.

Sad, he is a top centre back, made a big difference to Liverpool on his arrival, sure it will make a difference losing him.
I can't recall him ever getting into trouble of the pitch, or can't recall any immature or manipulative quotes,
just how you would expect a top professional to be.

Liverpool are still going to be pushing for the top but will be weaker without him

But was he so stable in conjunction with VVD? We’ve not seen much of him without Van Dijk protecting him most of the time. He’ll be more exposed more often now.

Can't change the rules mid season can they? And they shouldn't.

The incident was seen so what's done is done.

I'd agree with a change in rules from next season on and have said it before.
Why not? Not a single game week goes by without some VAR controversy. Now dodgy penalties and marginal offside calls are one thing, cant do anything about those once the ref has made the call, but i cant understand this reluctance to review serious cases where its clear a mistake was made. Everyone knew the ref made a mistake here, and the FA sticking to their decisions as if that somehow makes it more correct is just mental

Take the Martial/Lamela episode for example. Ridiculous red card and at the very least Lamela should have gotten a similar punishment retrospectively. The point of VAR was to weed out as much human error as possible, so this just feels counter intuitive

I have no love for the dippers, but i was one of them i would be fuming over the fact that Pickford gets off free here

I won't to pretend to be disappointed that a key Liverpool player will be sidelined for up to seven months, but the challenge that led to it was disgraceful.

We would be losing our shit if it was a United player in place of VVD.
Would we or would we* be too busy blaming Ole for a 2-2 draw?

(And by we I don't mean all of us, just the majority)

Feel for him, but these things happen. We lost vidic to an ACL for 6 months, ibra. City had sane out for the entirety of last season and KDB out for a long period a year before that. I don't remember the media ever kicking up that much of a fuss than they are about Virgil??

Annoyingly I can see Liverpool now spending over the odds for Upamecano in January instead of waiting for the summer release clause and have a view to have him be VVD's long term partner.

I’m sure he’ll come back strong. He probably won’t hit those ridiculous heights again, but then he was already declining from that top level.

Christ, what an absolute disaster of a match for us.

Having to play Matip and Gomez for the rest of the season makes me uneasy as I think van Dijk made them both look better than they actually are.

Don’t see us winning the league again with those two.

It must be fecking horrible being at the top of your game, coming off the back of a title winning season, being the most important player for your team and then boom! - out for 8 months. Having to have surgery, therapy and general inconvenience to your life.

The more I see that Pickford chop the more it gets worse. He is a cnutish individual.

Footballers careers are short and they want to win as much as possible, especially during their later years. With all considered this could be one of the most impactful injury blows to a team and a player since I dont know...

I have a lot of sympathy for VVD.

Can’t imagine Pickford’s life is going to be very pleasant living and working near Liverpool for the next 12+ months. Have they found out where he lives yet?

Zlatan looks about as good as new now and he's 39 now.
The Italian league suits him at that age. It's probably worth remembering that pace didn't play a big part in Ibrahimovic's game whereas it's a fantastic asset of van Dijk's. I don't think we'll be seeing the same van Dijk after his injury.

Anyone else read through David Maddock's twitter?

He's billed as Daily Mirror "Northern" correspondant, but should definitely be "Liverpool fan" correspondant!
Aren't journos meant to pretend to be neutral?

Every player that’s ever had surgery for a “torn ACL”. So basically, loads. Our own Ruud Van Nistelrooy had the op before he even kicked a ball for United.

Grade 1 and 2 injuries can usually heal without surgery.
Ruud was 22. Grades are meaningless really. It's just a measure of the level of damage. When you consult after the injury, the specialist barely makes any mention of the severity. They are either gonna get a graft from a deceased person or from his tendons. It's never going to be the same again.

Yeah, look at this tweet.

And further down that tweet, the below.

Some of them only missed 1 game didn't they!? They have been spoilt by their outrageous luck with injuries this last few years if they're crying about 1 game injuries,

Since the start of the season, Liverpool have already lost Alisson, Van Dijk, Matip, Gomez, Tsimikas, Henderson, Thiago, Keita, Ox, Shaqiri and Mane.

What’s your thoughts on Gomez current form?

It might just be me but think he's been poor this season. Like you say I think VVD perhaps makes these two look a lot better.

Who has come back from a Grade 3 tear? And in what capacity?
Why do fans constantly have to go too far with their "worst case" scenarios.

30 years ago it might have been a career killer, but these days players do come back to the top level afterwards.

It's bad enough he'll be out a minimum of 6months, anywhere up to a year, without silly talk of him being finished, at what will be 30 or so.

Robertson, Henderson, Van Dijk, Gomez, Mane. Even TAA has a slappable face.
Salah for his slippy feet.

There's plenty of material in this team.
Yeah very true actually!
On what basis exactly? That's nonsense. He won't, and shouldn't be given a ban.

Shit, that would be annoying. Would be just like them to get a positive out of a negative situation. We need to press for Upamecano in Jan even if he is cup tied.

I can see Liverpool going for either Konate or Upamecano in the summer window or even earlier if possible. Konate has just returned from injury himself so it will depend on how quickly he regains his form.

I’m a doctor. And I’ve had an ACL repair. So I’m familiar with what’s involved. I’m only making the point that just because an ACL tear is Grade 3 doesn’t make it any worse than what’s happened to loads of other footballers who have had good careers after an ACL repair.
