Is Jadon Sancho really worth the 100 plus million fee?

Now we got Pellestri and Diallo, I think this one might be permanently dead.

There's a reason City, Bayern, Chelsea didn't go for Sancho. Nobody wants to pay 100m for a winger. That money should be saved for a proper no.9 now that we have a few more wingers. Amad Traore looks currently at a higher level at 18 than Sancho was 2 yrs ago. Not saying he will reach same level but he doesn't have to. We need a top level no.9 and top level defensive midfielder...remember when Matic hit his heights when we signed him we finished second.
Saying traore is currently at a higher level than sancho was two seasons ago is surely a bit mental. He hasnt even played a full game in serie A yet. A quick search shows sancho had 27 goals and assists in 2018/19 and 5 in 12 apps the year before

I havent seen enough of sancho in the bundesliga to judge his value but the german football pundits i listen to seemed to think the price was reasonable and it doesnt seem unreasonable if compared eith havertz's. In terms of his england performances his first couple were good but he has struggled in the last few (albeit in stodgy team performances)

As for the people saying his england performances have proved woodward right...talk about missing the point

I don't think he is worth that, but I just don't like the overinflated market tbh. Glad we did not stupidly pay that much for him, especially when covid has hit hard this year.

Don’t want, he’s got tattoos and I hear those types are trouble.
Completely agree! Plus he broke COVID rules. Wouldn’t even take him on a free now. The new Ravel M..., ahh no, I meant the new Dembele.

Ye olde "the coaches actually watch him in training and can compare him to other players" reasoning... gotta love common sense
So you think that the coach is alread right in his picks? You have never questioned a coach and believe all their selections are correct? Time to learn how to think for yourself and see the obvious errors there mate. But if you think that Mason Mount is better than Jadon Sancho, then who am I to argue with such sound logic...

Way to load up on the straw man arguments. Your original statement essentially asked when will Southgate start Sancho based on his stats as a teenager. The point is he actually sees him in training, competing against other teammates, and picks him based on a larger information set than "He's a teenager and tearing up the Bundesliga". Yes, the logic is sound.

your argument is "the coach sees him every day so he must be right". If that's the case then we might as well shut down this website because there's no point in expressing any opinion that isn't the exact same as the managers...

Where in this itw are they sounding regretful?
It doesn’t say anything about that in the article.
Well obviously they are going to come out crying -

But would any other club talk about a player who was leaving after the transfer window is done.

They are talking about him not being unsellable, how United had misunderstood their transfer request and that they would have accepted offers and have comprised for his sale.

That's a bit different to the team that had apparently just stuck at a transfer fee and were happy to keep him if United didnt match their request throughout all the transfer window.

I've probably tried to align things together unnaturally- but going from 'we want this for Sancho & no offers" to "United misunderstood the transfer, we would have compromised, he is sale next season" sounds a little like they want this done now.

I get your point mate, but this sounds more like the journalist trying to spin it this way. Maybe something lost in translation, choice of words etc.

Having done a fair bit of journalism myself, including for Goal.com, I would take these quotes with a pinch of salt.

At any rate, we both agree the quoted fee for Sancho was ludicrously overrated.

I don’t know though, I just can’t see the connection. All the journalists have said about it that the ones who’s to blamed was United. That word ‘’United misunderstood’’ looks to me that United didn’t take the 5th august deadline thing seriously and didn’t take the message that if United want to get Sancho after 5th August deadline, it needs to be 120m euro.

He said that they are willing to compromise next season. I loved how Dortmund secretly extended his contract till the summer of 2023 so this still puts Dortmund in a strong position. I'm glad we did not go for him this transfer window, Sancho is not worth this fee and Dortmund knows it.

He actually said more like the opposite. He said that there maybe was a club that was interested in signing Sancho, but maybe that club misjudged the situation by thinking they were open to negotiations, but Dortmund had clear line [the sum they agreed with Sancho beforehand]. It was a 20 minute interview where Sancho was a peripheral topic at best and this is a deliberately misleading translation.

No. The argument is "the coach sees in him training w/ his competition, so bringing up Sancho's age and what he's done in the Bundesliga as a stick to beat Southgate with is odd".

That’s because Sancho has said himself to the club that he wants to leave while Dortmund will keep their promise as long as the club can find an agreement for the price.

Was gutted when we did not sign him, but after getting some time to digest it i'm happy we did not pull the trigger here.

120 million is an outrageous price and we dont really know how he would have handled the PL. Kagawa and Miki both tore up the Bundesliga with Dortmund, and they were pretty underwhelming

I'm still gutted this didn't happen, would have put a completely different complexion on the season ahead

Still hope we can revive a deal in Jan or next summer but with all these young right wingers we've signed it seems we've almost accepted he's going somewhere else then

It would hurt me so much if he plays for any other club but us

In what way? We would at best make CL qualification again

All the best teams in Europe have managed so far without him including the best team in Germany. Its all the end of the world

Quite disappointed that we didn't get him at the time but on reflection maybe it was for the best.

Having said that, he's not worth over £100 million. This should get you a deadly finisher and he really isn't that. (Watch all his goals from last year)

Mhki and Kagawa were showing very similar Goals and assists numbers in their final seasons at Dortmund before moving to United.

Is he really worth 100 million?

The guy has so many quiet games outside the Bundesliga.

His age, nationality, potential, and performance so far make him worth 100m, imho. Then his profile for marketing and to attract good players are all adding up to be a good "big investment".

It's just when watching us tonight, I kept thinking, what did we need? Where would we start Sancho?

Is that Dortmund then building the price up for us rather than what the player is worth?

I want him here, I always have due to his nationality and being a good player that can improve- but without these things there isnt that much that excites me about him.

CL games I've seen him as inconsistent as a 100 million pound player shouldn't be. There is nothing that enthralled me when seeing him for the National team. In the Bundesliga he looks like a good dribbler, a good crosser & short passer with the ability to score a tap in.

Theres a part of me that wants him but the more I see him the less I would be hurt if he didnt really join us.

As you said - say if we build a 442 diamond or a 352 - where exactly does he play?

If I had pick between Haaland & Sancho, I'd rather buy a striker like Haaland and have Greenwood play RW when necessary. (Also I personally think that after Rashford's injury that he wont be as consistent on the LW as he might be playing upfront).

We signed 2 young players in that position so the club is planning to develop players there.

But, I would still sign him if we can get him around 80-90 range. Maybe cheaper next summer.

Whether or not he is worth it, I’m glad the club did smart business this summer. We signed Telles, Pellestri & Cavani at a fraction of what Dortmund was asking for him.

1 assist in 4 games, will be interesting to see how his season progresses.
