I never start threads on here, but feck it, it needs to be said.

THIS is what progress looks like. Its important that all of our fans, the optimists and the doom-mongers and everyone in between, realise and appreciate this.

Yes, its only one result, but its clear and obvious to see. The squad is taking shape, and the confidence they will take from this result is how teams evolve. This wasn't a smash and grab win. This was a measured, controlled and brilliantly executed European performance against one of the best.

This project has always been bigger than one win or one defeat. Its something that has to be measured and appraised over time. If we look back at where we were as a club and as a football team back when Jose left, and look now at the potential and the mentality of this team, I really dont see how anybody can be dissatisfied with the situation.

This is what progress looks like

Well said mate, it beats the other thred calling us small time.for beating PSG away, should we have lost?

Anyway, yes this is progress. Great win and we are looking more stable than those first three nightmare games.

We are normally always good in these games. It’s against poor opposition we struggle.

Forget the Spurs game, and we’ve got a really good record vs big sides.

While this is true, I think this performance was a lot for the 90 minutes than any of those other big games and probably our best performance under Ole. The first half an hour against City away was up there but we were then under the cosh for the rest of the game.

There may be others that I can't remember but were very good throughout tonight.

Solskjaer has a clear vision of what type of characters he want in the club and you see a big difference in how much the team is actually fighting for each other compared to before he came in.

All we need is the board and owners to fully back him...

Until Chelsea bring us back down again. Ah only joking it's a major performance in Europe, one that we've not seen since SAF despite a few decent European results. It was all about the complete performance tonight.

Jury is still out. Good result though. Great performances from some of the lads.

As said in the other similar thread progress will always be in spite of the leaches running the club, they caused the negativity going into this season and the results were to be expected. All Ole can do while his hands are tied is continue to beat the odds and get the best he can out of this group and hope it takes us places

We pick up a lot of points in the big games but we actually went toe to toe with PSG tonight which is something we've not done anough against big teams in recent years. Apart from about 10 minutes in the second half we took the game to PSG.

there’s posters on here who would have preferred us to lose, just so they can come on a forum and complain about the club.

I new we would see people still wining and finding reasons to slag off players, the manager and the club.

seriously, if you can’t enjoy this game as a United fan, I think you should give up, because you lead a miserable life.

Its why I wanted to start this thread. Beat Chelsea or lose 3-0, it doesn't matter, we are still progressing as a club. It has to be appraised over longer periods, and i hope that our fans can start to look at this from a wider angle and not over-react after every result.

We're going to lose sometimes, it happens, but the way we finished last season in finishing 3rd, and the encouraging way that we've gone out and beaten a top, top European side tonight, shows that this project is working.

Spot on, I can’t stop smiling!

When was the last time we went toe to toe with a top European side away from home?

It doesn't matter. We need to stop letting our feelings about the board put any kind of dampener on enjoying the good times on the pitch. Its far healthier to compartmentalise the two.

We might well look back on this last window as being fantastic. VDB and Telles already look like good additions to this squad. Cant wait to see Cavani give us a different option up front, and i can't shake the feeling that Diallo is going to be a superstar (based on very little admittedly)

Its bloody brilliant, and a big difference from the last time. That really was a smash and grab.

Heard the commentator say they hadn’t lost a home game (not sure whether just group stage or inc knockout) since 2004.

I'm not letting anything ruin tonight, just frustrating wondering what we could have achieved this season if the board backed the manager, especially knowing now what's happened to Liverpool

100% when Ole made the change it was one way traffic and only one team looked like they were gonna get a winner really (besides maybe a few moments PSG had).

It felt like when we are trying to blast a lower prem team at the end of a game. Doing that to last seasons finalists is very impressive!

Why not wait until you know what will happen this season? No offence, just feels to me like you're being frustrated before you know whether you should be frustrated

I feel you. The prem is so winnable this season.. im unsure sancho wouldve made the difference. Hes been average so far tbis campaign for dortmund. I do believe haland wouldve provided us the goals though.. 25+ a season to win the league when liverpool chelsea and city all look average.

Comparing this to the last time we beat PSG is night and day. Solskjær tactically dismantled Tuchel once, the twice, and had Martial and Rashford been as sharp as Mbappé and Di Maria, we’d probably won more. I just can’t wrap my head around that so many posters thinks there are fifteen coaches in the PL that are better than Thomas Tuchel.

Well unless we go on to do something remarkable with this squad I think it's safe to say those frustrations will still be valid come May

I have a vague feeling that we may have won away to PSG before :)

The way we are loading up with academy talent, I suspect we aren't targeting to make a proper challenge for another couple of years.

We have played our best football and been our most consistent all year in fact, since Fergie left. By that, I mean, we have consistently looked threatening going forward and deserved the majority of our wins. I am not sure how sustainable the way we play is though because I still think we do not help our players due to our inability to control the midfield consistently. This means we ask our forwards to do too much on their own when we try to help our defenders by committing men behind like tonight, or expose our defenders when we try to push more. This, to me is a structural deficiency that is the same it always was. What has changed this year (2020) is that we have some top performing players who are legit game changers and some hard working runners who can work in cohesion. This, however relies too much on form, confidence and momentum which is why you see us blow hot and cold. We can still go far if we manage to generate enough momentum and our game changers keep improving but the best teams control midfields and are rarely if ever pinned back, so it will be interesting how this team grows in the coming months.

We were actually able to field a team tactically astute to deal with PSG's strengths and exploit their weakness's without cramming all our "best" players into the 11. It was testament to the improved squad strength and quality.

He brings what we are looking for, the technical stability. Mata brings it but is old. We need that, maybe VdB will bring it, but he's also more about attacking the space...
We need that technical stability because contrary to popular belief, we are actually pretty good defensively. We needed someone on the right to combine between the lines and score goals, hence Sancho, but maybe Diallo will bring that.
Then there is the midfield. Pogba needs to do better in the specific role and not just offensively, but he could, he's a WC midfielder and our best player individually. Then we will be sound.

That is why I dont mind Ole as director of football if not head coach.

I feel threads like this is months too early.

The season just recently started. Lets revisit the conversation when we are at least halfway through. One loss to Chelsea and the forum will be back where it was before this PSG win.

I remember people calling me mad because I felt we could be a dark horse for the CL this year. I honestly think we're going to cause teams lots of problems, the Tottenham game was a bad day at the office, we're generally a hard team to play against for the big clubs. Pace, technique, grit and we do have a good defense when everyones fit. Going to be a fun ride this year.

I saw progress last season with the run after the lockdown. A few games with a legit excuse of "undercook" and a 10 men game doesn't change that perception. Maybe if we have lost against Newcastle and PSG I say we have regressed. But now it is on par of what we should expect given the backing Ole received from the board in the transfer window.

Reality check, we are not going to win every game and I would not say it is totally Ole's fault. Let's not forget how the board did the dirty on Ole.

That's going to happen to just about any opinion due to the size of the community. Best to just consider yourself lucky if you make it out without too many straw man/whataboutisms.

But that thread did have a lot of people not understanding what 'dark horse' meant.

On our day(s) we can beat anyone over two legs.

Maybe since we last beat them 3-1. So commentator was misheard or very wrong. We played very similar tactics & lineup last time, we’ve just got the edge over them on their own patch .
