Getting carried away after a win against PSG, it seems like the caf has learned nothing

Did we learn anything from that win that we didn't already know?

Didn't we already know United can play five at the back and get a favourable result away against another European top club?
And that is somehow a bad thing? Should we have lost or should we have played a different formation for this to count?

Didn't we already know that this United side thrives when being the underdog, ie not expected to win?
We win quite a lot against teams considered 'underdogs' against us too. Pure facts, look at results.

Didn't we already know that United can win narrow games thanks to penalties, and do we know that the penalties will sooner or later dry up?
Penalties are a result of good play in the opposition box. And the fact that we had a record number of penalties last season kind of disproves your thesis that they will dry up.

Solkjaer's quest to turn United into a plucky midtable club is def succeeding.
Does 3rd place mean midtable to you? Or are you just a bitter, agenda-driven and stubborn person who clings to their opinion regardless how many facts disprove it?

When this United side can easily brush aside the likes of Crystal Palace/Tottenham at home, when the pressure is still on, with a swagger befitting of one of the biggest clubs in the world, that's when Solkjaer can start proving everyone wrong. A win in the CL group stage against a poor PSG side fielding such mediocrity as Kean, Herrera and Kurzawa, is no impressive feat at all.
Ok, so let's look at our record then:

These are our results since the Burnley debacle on the 22nd of January (we lost 0:2 at home), excluding games against Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal:

  • Watford at home, 3:0 win
  • Everton away, 1:1 draw
  • Derby County away for the FA Cup, 3:0 win
  • Sheffield United at home, 3:0 win
  • Norwich, neutral for the FA Cup, 1:2 win after extra time
  • Brighton away, 3:0 win
  • Bournemouth at home, 5:2 win
  • Aston Villa away, 3:0 win
  • Southampton at home, 2:2 draw (the game we lost Shaw to injury)
  • Crystal Palace away, 2:0 win
  • West Ham at home, 1:1 draw
  • Leicester away, 2:0 win
  • Crystal Palace at home, 1:3 loss (new season)
  • Luton away for the Carabao, 3:0 win
  • Brighton away, 3:2 win
  • Brighton away for the Carabao, 3:0 win
  • Tottenham at home, 1:6 loss
  • Newcastle away, 4:1 win
So, are you still claiming that we can't beat such sides? Or is your agenda too deep and strong to admit you were wrong?

You'll get backlash with this post but knee jerking works both ways - after a big win and a disappointing loss. We're still very much a work in progress and I don't believe Ole is the man to take us to the position of challenging for titles but there was a clear difference in how we played last night versus how we playing the game that got Ole the job. That's what the most impressive things from last night was - the performance, not the result.
This is new... it's like a pre-emptive knee-jerk against the knee-jerk... some kind of knee-jerkception

We learned some new things though:
  • Shaw is better fit for LCB than left back, let alone wingback
  • Lindelof can be a fine defender if surrounded by pace (same applies to Maguire I'm sure)
  • we should not fear any wingers against Wan Bissaka, PSG was at tough game as it gets with Mbappe and Neymar coming at him
  • Fred and McTominay didn't crumble when pressed (although this PSG side wasn't particularly great, they still have quality all over the pitch)
Most importantly we've won because we've been the better team overall, not relying on individual brilliance. That certainly is a good sign, and hopefully we'll gain some momentum now. About time for big league games.
Mbappe in big CL games with paris : 3 goals in 13 games including only one in 9 KOs CL games and most of time, mediocre performances in all those games and not even one mind blowing performance.
So yeah as tough as it gets indeed....
Give me the likes of Gnabry, Rashford, Lewandowski, Haaland, Sancho,Dybala, Coman or Muller any day of the week over the overrated Frenchman.
And let's not talk about Messi and CR7 of course

Imagine being happy about quantifiable progress? Imagine that strange notion.

Last night the best team won, to a team that haven’t lost a game at home since 2004 and reached a CL final last season.

That result would have not been possible post Fergie until now.
an almost as overrated stat as Mbappe : firstly, Paris didn't play in CL between 2004 and 2012 which makes this stat much less impressive and secondly, you can't really say Paris played at home yesterday as there was no crowd

If you can't enjoy a night of football like this one, you might as well stop watching altogether. We all know the next game might be a completely different story. All the more reason to enjoy this one.

Imagine celebrating or appreciating a one-off victory. Small time central here. I refuse to smile at anything less than back to back league titles, or a treble.

The OP is prime example of why fake journo's leach a living from printing rubbish about United.

So many fans are so wrapped up in this negativity.

Okay. I won’t get carried away with last night. I actually think we can play far better with the ball than we did. Can I get carried away with 4 defeats since January instead? Or is that not a big enough sample size to escape the pit of misery most in this place are perpetually in
This is the thing I don't get. Barring two losses when they were short a preseason we've been very good since the start of February. That's over 30 games. And yet people act like beating PSG is some sort of rare respite from months of torture and that Ole is on the point of being sacked.

I keep hearing how we can scrape results against good sides but still need to learn how to break down low blocks. But since Bruno signed we've averaged something like 2.5 goals a game. Extrapolate that out over a full season and we'll get well over 100 goals in all competitions. That's excellent.

Has the pandemic just destroyed peoples ability to see the good in anything? We've been as good as any team in England since the end of January and the results prove it. We've actually made really good progress.

Didn't we already know United can play five at the back and get a favourable result away against another European top club? I believe a lot of people are pleased about how we looked rather than just the win. We have won a lot of big games by absorbing pressure and countering but this was more like the City game last season were we actually outplayed them and were clearly the more dangerous side.

Didn't we already know that this United side thrives when being the underdog, ie not expected to win? Yes we need to improve at putting away smaller sides. With that said we were the form side in the league since the restart last season and despite suffering from a lack of pre season and a dodgy red card we seem to be getting on track now we have some games under our belt.

Didn't we already know that United can win narrow games thanks to penalties, and do we know that the penalties will sooner or later dry up? We win penalties because we have a lot of fast tricky players in the era of VAR. I see no reason why they would "dry up".

Solkjaer's quest to turn United into a plucky midtable club is def succeeding. Finished third and Ole said it was not good enough. Ironically Ole is the coach most likely to actually batter a mid table side since Sir Alex.

"A poor PSG side" that got to the Champions League final.
We are still a work in project, seems like some fans will mock others for taking any happiness from good results unless we are run away league winners. Ole may or may not be the right man but for now he is the coach and I think there are good signs and some not so great signs.

It has been a pretty dire few seasons since Sir Alex retired, could you not just let fans enjoy the bright spots when they come?

Where are the quotes to suggest people are getting “carried away”? I’ve not seen evidence of that. Just celebrating a good win where we got it right on and off the pitch.

Move on to the next game. If we beat Chelsea I will feel even more optimistic. Why shouldn't I enjoy us winning a game it is what being a fan is all about.

When we lose it proves everything, when we win it proves nothing. Am I getting that right?
Pretty much. There are people though who have measured opinions. A lot of the Ole in crowd are wary of his shortcomings, and a lot of the Ole out crowd see that he's progressed the side somewhat, trimmed the squad, improved the atmosphere and gotten good results when he can set the team up for counter attack.

I don't disagree that an emphatic performance has some people thinking everything is great again and we're going to win major titles under Ole. Similar with players, they perform for 2-3 matches and people think they've proved a point. For both the manager, the team collectively, and players individually, it is consistency of performance that determines how good you are.

Top reds not happy Solskjaer got a good result so need to paint the fans who enjoyed it as small time to make them and their elite mindsets feel better.

What a weirdly miserly thread. Hopefully he's just providing satirical balance to the gushing Ole-isms and this is not just the work of a person who can no longer feel or express pleasure in any form.

This thread really isn't needed right now. As much as I still question Ole is the guy to take us right back to the top, if you can't praise the performance last night and I say actual performance because we've gotten some good results in Europe since SAF before but never did we play as well last night. At times we dominated PSG.

Stop being so pessimistic and for once enjoy a game when you can. From reading all the things you have just said, I gather that you are taking a lot of things to heart. I blame the owners and that idiot Ed for screwing up our club but I will never not appreciate a performance like this. Regardless of what the situation is, we should never feel like underdogs. We're one the biggest clubs in Europe and I'm sure Ole brought that up in his team meeting. Yes, our squad is small and we have problems in every part of the pitch but for once I saw Ole and the team being positive and courageous. It's times like these I want us true fans to enjoy because God knows if things will stay the same way. I know you cannot take this victory to our heads and expect this to repeat every game but I'm saying don't ruin the moment for all of us because it was a hard fought victory and the team deserves our praise. We took a plan and executed it to perfection. It's not our fault that PSG played a weak team because we can only control our side of things.

So for once, enjoy what you see and keep supporting the club. Ole still needs many players to fix up this team but he's doing the best he can and I for one am loving what I saw against PSG. The courage, the fast paced game, every player in our team looked dangerous, that's all I would ask of our players.

I think this was possibly the most encouraging performance and result that we've had under Ole. Yeah we've had big wins, but this was different. Away to PSG in the Champions League, very difficult group, no Maguire, rough start to the season, and we just looked very good. Tuanzebe showed he actually has it in him to be a top defender, Telles provided the best delivery from the wing since we had Giggs at the club probably (not kidding, our crossing has been garbage for years), the midfield looked very balanced but more than anything, as a team, we looked well coached. We started off correctly, Ole wasn't pressured into starting Pogba and went for whats better for the system in the end, then when PSG started to take control a bit, Ole showed excellent in game management to change systems and take back control and push for the win. Would've been easy to try and see out the draw which wouldve been a decent result all the same, but from a coaching perspective, it was the most encouraged I've been in a long time. Combine that with good depth, and you have the start of something very good.

Ok, so let's look at our record then:

These are our results since the Burnley debacle on the 22nd of January (we lost 0:2 at home), excluding games against Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal:

  • Watford at home, 3:0 win
  • Everton away, 1:1 draw
  • Derby County away for the FA Cup, 3:0 win
  • Sheffield United at home, 3:0 win
  • Norwich, neutral for the FA Cup, 1:2 win after extra time
  • Brighton away, 3:0 win
  • Bournemouth at home, 5:2 win
  • Aston Villa away, 3:0 win
  • Southampton at home, 2:2 draw (the game we lost Shaw to injury)
  • Crystal Palace away, 2:0 win
  • West Ham at home, 1:1 draw
  • Leicester away, 2:0 win
  • Crystal Palace at home, 1:3 loss (new season)
  • Luton away for the Carabao, 3:0 win
  • Brighton away, 3:2 win
  • Brighton away for the Carabao, 3:0 win
  • Tottenham at home, 1:6 loss
  • Newcastle away, 4:1 win
So, are you still claiming that we can't beat such sides? Or is your agenda too deep and strong to admit you were wrong?
Well put!

We are getting penalties because we have pacey players attacking the box. It isn't going to dry up unless we change our forward line.

Awful thread.

Elvis made a similar thread and I agreed there too. It was a good result of course but it's one game and doesn't undermine certain complaints.

Personally I thought the game could have gone either way but the fact our team (particularly the defense) were heroic makes it more impressive. It was, put simply, an electrifying performance; the type that galvanises the soul leading our hearts to thump rhythmically to the chant of United, United!

This though does always seem to come against lesser teams, which is probably why we struggle against them more than bigger teams, (edited) but certainly fair play to Ole for motivating the players when he needs to, like after lockdown when we were chasing top 4, as Eckers mentions below.

I still feel we need to go on a run of 5-10 great games to truly say things have turned around. After this and Newcastle there's promise which is great.

That said, results are half the problem. The caf thinks we're amazing when we win and shit when we lose. It's rarely a reflection of the bigger picture.

I feel we need to go on a run of 5-10 great games to truly say things have turned around. There's promise now which is the best thing.
We've already done that this calendar year and plenty of people - the usual suspects - remained unconvinced. That was just a Bruno-inspired purple patch that bore no reflection on Ole as a manager. Nothing good is ever down to him and anything bad is definitely down to him. It's utter horseshit.

Fair point. I think my only criticism left is that we seem better at being reactive rather than proactive (like after lockdown when we were chasing top 4). It's probably the missing link between us and a proper title challenge. Hopefully it comes over the next few years.

Not getting carried away is one thing, we aren't going to fly to the title now as we are still missing a couple of key components for that, but we have come on leaps and bounds and to not see the positives when they arise is quite sad frankly.

You have to enjoy the good games when they come my friend and yes PSG were poor but every player gave it everything and that is the minimum you can ask. We slate players so easily but when they give performances like that against a top opposition who were only Champions League finalists last season you have to applaud. Also not having a proper preseason leading majority of the squad unfit will lead to performances we have seen. Lets not Bash but hope we go on a run from here an Unbeaten Winning Run.

DDG looks focused. AWB last couple of games looks like the guy we signed. Axel with a fantastic performance when being brought into a pressure situation. Lindelof looked good with pace next to him. Luke looked accomplished as a LCB. Telles looks a great aquisition with a wand of a left foot. Scotty and Fred worked their socks off, especially as it's reported Scott couldn't see that well, Bruno drives this team on, missed a penalty, but still had the nerve to retake it. Rashford and Martial wasted chances, but Martial still won the penalty for us, spoilt it a bit with the OG. Rashford again wasted chances, but doesn't let his head drop and when the really big chance came he took it. Pogba left out, but still came on and made a difference with the pass for Rashford to score. What is there not to be upbeat about. Yes it could all go wrong again, but I will still enjoy this moment.

We damn well deserved to win.

I think positives to take away from this that may actually make us a better team going forward is that ole can now maybe trust tuanzebe playing as a central defender which he was hesitant to do early last season in meaningful matches before he got injured.

Ole seems to have the bottle to drop pogba rather than trying to shoehorn him into the side and being just fine without him.
