Thanks to the efforts of the brilliant Marcus Rashford, dozens of restaurants/cafes/bars etc up and down the country have offered to step in and offer free lunch to kids during the half term break.

The working people of Britain have stepped up and filled in to fulfill the duty of the neglegent government. Check out Marcus Rashfords twitter timeline - he's been re-tweeting their efforts.

https://twitter.com/MarcusRashford

I counted 54 so far which he's retweeted about.

These kind hearted people give us all something to be proud of today.

If this title has offended you I apologise. I understand Britain has a strange relationship with anything that could be mistaken for patriotism. Let me assure you I was not at all trying to be patriotic. In fact I'm a dual national. Lets try to ignore it and focus on the GREAT things the people helping Marcus in his campaign to feed children are doing. If you can't do that and do feel the urge to comment on the title please click here.

For real, The tories love when society does the hard work. It's like a group project where one or two people do feck all and then take the credit.

"It is known as ‘Great’ because it is the largest island in the British Isles, and houses the countries of England, Scotland and Wales within its shores.

The name Britain derives from the Roman word Britannia, but there are two conflicting arguments about why the ‘Great’ was stuck on the front of it. The first is that it is used to distinguish Britain from its similar sounding, but much smaller French neighbour, Brittany. The second reason is due to the ego of a certain King James I, who wanted to make it abundantly clear that he wasn’t just the king of the old Roman Britain (which only included England and some of Wales), but of the entire island; thus he referred to himself as King of Great Britain"

In other languages the word for great Britain is usually the same as large or big.

This is why Britain is BIG and then we post fat people who spend all their money on fags and don't buy food for their kids.

Interesting that this situation has led the OP to a splurge of patriotism. When it is our "Great" country that has allowed the situation to get this bad in the first place.

You lot of fecking miserable sometimes.

What is wrong with being glad that normal people have stepped up to help the most vulnerable people in society, at a time where those bastards we elected into office turned their back on them? I think it's especially GREAT that a lot of this has happened because of the work of our own Marcus Rashford. Most 22 year old premier league footballers are only interested in themselves and their desires and here we have Marcus working tirelessly to help the needy.

I wanted to take a moment to praise those peoples efforts, in a forum where i'd think it'd be appreciated. Instead some of you lot are going on like i'm sat here spooning with a Nigel Farage sex doll.

It's because instead of focusing on the positive actions made by individuals, you felt the need to focus on the greatness of Great Britain. That's a bit of a strange move.

 at the people getting riled up by the thread title.

Seeing as you've already googled the words "great" and "Britain", maybe the next one you can lookup is "wordplay".

YESHHHHH, We'll GOOO for it.
No, I believe it has something to do with the island size or something related to colonialism.

But good work Marcus and the amazingly kind small business people

I think we can all admire what Rashford is trying to achieve however Britain is far from great at the moment.

If by great you mean historically the absolute worst, then.. sure.

Well in Marcus.
Seeing as Britain is the only Britain, isn't it simultaneously the greatest and the worst Britain?

Food for thought. Maybe fish fingers can Google it for us.

A lot of people in here have the mentality and outlook as if they found £5 on the street, they would be annoyed it’s not a £20 note.

a lot of things aren’t working well at the moment, but it’s good things like this that will help lift the doom and gloom. Stop being so bloody negative about everything.

well done Marcus, and well done those businesses who are supporting this.

Or a lot of people think it's a damning indictment of our country that it necessary for private individuals and local councils to step in to make up for the complete dereliction of duty by our government.

It's such an obvious point that I assume right wing posters stepping in to act confused about it are playing dumb on purpose.

Giving undue credit there...

Great act all round though. Kudos for these businesses being great.

I get where you’re coming from and I do agree and it’s absolutely incredible to see businesses stepping up, however it is a little frustrating that it has come to this.

I have no problem with the word Great used in conjunction with Rashford's campaign. Indeed, Marcus has put the Great back into Great Britain and just because this is the CE people could be allowed to get over themselves occasionally.

Actually, the name Great Britain only became official in 1707 (when the Acts of Union brought Scotland and England/Wales into a single political entity). This happened decades after James I died.

The name Great Britain came about because the French used to refer to both Brittany and the Island of Britain by the same name: Bretagne. So when the kingdoms of Scotland and England/Wales united, there needed to be a way to differentiate. The French did this by sticking the word 'Grande' at the beginning of their name for Island of Britain.

Grande Bretagne then calqued into the name Great Britain, giving us what we have today.

I assume that’s having a go?

everyone can see there are issues left, right and centre at the moment.

Sometimes, we need to put aside politics and negativity and just celebrate the good that these people are doing. Of course it should not have to be this way, but it would be nice to put aside the debate behind that, carry that on elsewhere, and just say well done.

It isn't the only the only Britain... at least not in French where they use the same word to describe Brittany.

But Britain is bigger than Brittany, hence the Grande/Great prefix.

I'm not have a pop at you specifically, but yours was an example of the posts that I was referring to yes.

Sure, we can celebrate individuals who are stepping in and stepping up. We can also think that the fact this government has made that necessary is nothing to be proud of or worth celebrating, and that it sets a dangerous precedent that further functions of the state will be wilfully abandoned by the group of wreckers we have in charge.

None of those things seem like particularly difficult things to me, and I'm not sure anyone should be welcoming such news as if we're living in Victorian England and all reliant on the benevolence of our better classes to ensure we don't all stave to death.

Jaysus, lads, cut him some slack.

We all know that Marcus is a phenomenal person but what makes his twitter feed so moving today is all the local businesses who must already be in the shit stepping up to feed vulnerable kids. Also a wonderfully diverse bunch, from old school choppers to curry houses.

I’m far from blowing smoke up the arse of a nation that invaded and occupied (and still occupies!) my homeland but the response to Rashford’s campaign is a credit to a lot of ordinary British people.

I get the sentiment but this issue is inherently political! And to be honest if this sheds further light on how nasty, incompetent and detached the Tories are then that's a bonus.

Wait, is anyone having a pop at Rashford or the people who have decided to help out? I think for most it's just frustration that it had to come to this rather than being supported by the government themselves.

So the cheese-eating surrender monkeys are responsible for the animosity in this thread? I should've known.

It's interesting to see how this type of things is casually accepted. Is there any other example where people are comfortable with it?

I always wonder where this common wisdom about the French being surrender prone comes from. As far as I can tell, in terms of WW2 it comes from the French being steamrolled by the Nazi juggernaut when standing their ground, while the English celebrated their glorious escape back across the channel. Maybe it's an Irish thing but we have a very different idea of what surrender is.
