This is the kind of mentality which sees us accumulating deadwood we struggle to shift. Williams isn't a first-team player and probably never will be, honestly a team like Southampton is probably his level.

I'd rather see Laird given his chance, we've got to move on from this blind loyalty to academy players.
it’s not blind loyalty, id be up for signing a new RB but that won’t happen so I’m commenting on our current options. Laird should have been given a chance by now if we see him as the main backup for AWB.

Seems to get a lot of shit on here Williams but I think he’s a decent young squad player.

He’s from the academy, by the time we decide to sell him it will be the point where we’d struggle to get more than £2m or so. Until then, we’ll say something about ‘gets the club’ and ‘squad player’.
I reckon he’ll stay and play about 10 games in all competitions this season. We need him as back-up, because we can’t have TFM playing another whopping 5 games this season like he did last year!

What makes you believe Williams isn't good enough?

Probably.

People complain about Liverpool getting great money for their fringe players. It’s for reasons like this. I have little doubt that United would have absolutely kept Harry Wilson, Rhian Brewster and Jordan Ibe. We’ll just say ‘they will be squad players’ and that would be that. We would never sell a Williams or a Tuanzebe until it gets to a point where you see them on the bench in a random cup game and think ‘ah, he’s still here’.

He's a run of the mill player that you see at most Premier League clubs. He puts himself about a bit but there isn't much more substance to him than that.

Could he not develop his technical side? He clearly has the physical tools for the position.

Possibly, but not to an extent where he'll ever be a viable first-team option at United. I don't think he has any standout traits to make it as a top level full-back, hence we should look to cash in.

I'd be interested to know how long he's been playing as a left back from youth level. I'd argue it's held back any technical progression unless the misguided intention was to make him some sort of inverted option from the left.

IMO he has the physical tools for a wing back but has clearly been played on the wrong side for potentially a long time. I would like to see him at right back for a period of time as it could help his natural development. He's clearly not a left back long term, his natural inclination to use his right foot it all too obvious.

I'd like to see him at right back. He's shown enough promise and he can definitely rotate with Wan Bissaka (and will need to less frequently than Shaw), and in a pinch can do left back in a crisis now. Between the reserves and last season though, he's worth keeping as cover.

He’s better than Bissaka in every aspect, what he offers in attack, defend, & he’s probably quicker. The only thing he’s not better is the one on one situation & tackle.

He'll probably take Wan Bissaka's spot before christmas. Laird is our long-term first choice RB however if he can overcome his injury problems.

Doesn't seem to be progressing as a player. In fact, I think he's got worse since he first started featuring for the first XI.

Like almost all of our players, seems to be on the downward trend.

Brandon has looked great playing on the right for the U23’s tonight.

Great news! Hopefully we never ever see him on the left again. He would fit perfectly behind AWB

You mean in the pecking order or playing in the back three? He had some great games on the left as well but as a young player he had some more average performances too in his debut season, no need to jump any conclusions. He could be a good cover on both sides, however now with Telles coming in we will probably see him from the right more.

And coming back to the idea of him starting in the back three might not be the worst in some games. He's very good defender and albeit a bit short, he's got a great leap and wins headers against much taller players, could be a great overlapping RCB (similar to Shaw on the left) when he gets to his physical best, with two more traditional CBs next to him and defensive duo in Fred and McT.

But maybe that's just my love for aggressive ball winning players:cool:

just referring to the pecking order as AWB's understudy. He is too small to play anything else but RB/rWB. I look forward to seeing him as RB/WB this season with the first team.

He's won quite a few penalties for us considering his game time. Must be up there with Rashford/Martial.
He is really brave and deceptively quick. I wish he would penetrate space at full speed more often as it is so dangerous when he does it, but it does seem to have tapered off a bit. He played more and more like Shaw on the left at the end of last season and it didn't do him any favours. I'm hoping a big second season is coming from him.

For me Brandon Williams is good enough for our squad aslong as he is happy playing a backup role for a top club in his career.

Having that fullback which is a single player but can play on both sides to a good capable standard is something that can be important when making a first team squad and deciding who sits on the bench.

Sometimes you dont need 2 fullbacks taking spots on the bench, especially when the ones starting are in good form.

To be fair. He wasn’t too happy with the idea since he was linked move away to Southampton on loan. Ole convinced him that he had place in the manager’s.Personally, I would rather him staying here and fight for his own spot and he needs to realise playing for United isn’t easy so he needs to works harder, impress the manager & understand that there is competition. He probably only gonna get game time in cup games since bissaka isn’t injury prone that’s my concern but I think he’s good enough to fight for the spot. I have a feeling next season he will go out on loan.

2:00 . Says he raced Rashford and beat him. Very surprising but it depends on the distance I guess.

I watched some highlights of the U23 match vs Everton and interesting to see him played as RB in that game. Hopefully they have finally realized that he is not a LB. He has the pace and the energy. I'd like to see him work on his crossing though...

I think that was quite obvious for some time, we just didn't have any other options.

AWB will need some rest soon, Williams will still be useful. Glad he's building confidence and fitness at any level really. Should do the same with Dan James.

I think he’s always been considered as more of a right back, he played at left back in the youth teams because Laird was the best option for the right back position at the time. A loan to a PL side would be a brilliant option for him, if those Southampton rumours were true and he would get regular starts at RB under a very good manager.

As stated in previous post, the lad looked promising but hard to judge from afar. A lot of the posts appear to be judging him on the team he plays for? How he performs at training and in U23 games will have a bearing and also how the personnel playing in his first team positions are taken into account. Clean sheet against Chelski helps those in team at moment. Hopefully he continues to improve and puts pressure on those in front of him, which can only be a good thing for team.

I rate Williams. Issue was on the left we don’t have a left footed winger and both him and the winger wanted to come inside.
