Looking for the answers...
I’ve just watched The Shining for the first time and what a crock of absolute shite.

The woman who plays jack nicholsons wife is comically bad.

Maybe I’m 40 years too late to the party, but my god what a disappointment. Only watched it as my Mrs wants to watch Dr Sleep on Sky Cinema and said I’d need to see this first.

A lot of people really hyped up Django Unchained to me, and I was left pretty disappointed when I watched it.

Also the Revenant won so many awards, and I considered it a waste of my money when I went to see it.

The Irishman. Decent story but overly long with dodgy CGI. De Niro fighting outside the shop was unintentional comedy.

Not saying The Godfather trilogy is bad, but I've just never been able to get passed film 2 part 1.
Was never a massive fan of The Matrix either. Probably was a bit young when I first watched it.

2001: A Space Odyssey.
The scene with the chimps was the best part. Rest was quite boring.

Avatar. I actually quite liked it, especially in 3D, but it was hyped up to be something really special and over time has been largely forgotten

Agree with wolf of wall street, Its constructed in a way it wants you to cheer for Belfort, but he's such an unlikable wanker it kills any enjoyment for me. Margot robbie is fire though.

I've just never really understood the hype that star wars got (the original trilogy).

Caddyshack. I guess it shouldn't be all that surprising that a 40 year old comedy didn't age well but I just couldn't believe how little I enjoyed it

I thought the Revenant was a bit disappointing. To be fair it was a beautiful movie to look at, it just wasn't as strong a story or as well acted as I expected

Also, while this is a bit of stretch (and only because I just recently watched it again), I would say Dunkirk didn't live up to my own expectation. I didn't particularly like the non-linear storyline and I don't think they really did well to show the scale of the Dunkirk evacuation. I kind of felt like that 5 to 6 minute scene in Atonement captured the enormity better than Dunkirk. Also, the last scene with the Spitfire running out of fuel and shooting down the Stuka was completely unrealistic and something suitable for a Michael Bay film

Believe it or not, the BBC reported that after the war attempts were made to make Spitfires break the sound barrier. Like Hardy, one pilot was able to successfully glide and navigate his plane down safely after the propeller had broken off completely.

What’s more, a USA Today Q&A with a pilot posed the question of how far a jetliner could glide if the engine quit at 30,000 feet. While it would vary in the wind, the pilot estimated that it could travel for another 100 miles. An older, smaller plane like the Spitfire would cruise at only 20,000 feet, and it’s 78.5 miles from Dover, England to Dunkirk — so even after the Spitfire’s dogfights, the distance it traveled in the film without a propeller was well within the range of possibility.

There's also examples during the war of pilots being able to glide their spitfires of upto 15 miles. One thing I can commend Nolan on is getting the details right, granted they're added some flair but they're never completely hollywood, there's always a dose of possibility behind it.

Well, that is interesting, so maybe it is possible, but I still think there are differences. Here is the scene

The Spitfire passes the Admiral at a pretty low level. From the camera angle previous from the beach, it looks very low. As it passes the Admiral it moves out of the picture. The Admiral then looks in sort of the opposite direction and a Stuka appears. The Spitfire, while gliding, presumably does a very sharp 180 loop, all while maintaining or gaining altitude to attack the Stuka

I am not a pilot, but I would imagine that turning the plane like that and properly angling it to shot the Stuka at the exact moment would have been improbable. I think gliding along a straight line was doable. Gliding plus turning plus possibly increasing altitude to attack the Stuka without stalling or crashing seems highly unlikely

Agree with The Revenant. Found it really boring. Yes visually it was good, but there was no story to speak of.

Never understood the hype over Star Wars. Average at best.
Same. I only watched the original ones about 5 years or so ago though, so I do wonder if it was just an "of its time" kind of movie. By the time I came round to it I'd seen many space movies with aliens and shit all done much better.

I was really surprised by Princess Leah too.. :nervous: given the "princess Leah in the golden bikini" stuff i was expecting better. I think reality of it is because she spent that movie mainly running around with no bra on.

Disagree about Django and Wolf of Wall Street. All the others mentioned so far - fair enough although Star Wars is another I would say is great entertainment.

I enjoyed Django but would agree about it being in here, but probably just because I hyped it up to myself so much.

Leo was incredible in that movie.

It was a steaming file of crap on release. Totally missed the point of the book.

People talk about The Big Lebowski as if it's on a whole different level of comedy to anything that's ever been made ever. It's just not. It's ok, but nothing more than that.

Cue all the neckbeards responding to this with "Yeah, but that's just like.... your opinion, man." You're not fecking funny either. Feck off.

I can’t find a thread that discusses top movies. I watched Parasite last night. Best move I have ever seen in my life and it’s in sub titles. Greatest movie i have ever seen. A must watch. I only watched it last night and it was so good I’m going to watch it again today. Brilliant movie.
