I didn’t play the original PS3 title of this but this does look really good albeit frustrating at the same time with those numerous boss fights. Tempted to pick it up at launch. How long typically is the campaign/main story for this?

Are you coming from playing and completing the dark souls series or not makes abig difference on time to complete. If your starting from scratch completely it’s a lot bigger learning curve

I found the boss fights generally much easier than most in later Soulsborne titles, though as usual, your mileage may vary. You could probably finish this one in 30-odd hours, but it depends on how much experience you have with other similar titles.

Cheers guys.

I’ve not played any of the previous titles in this franchise already so it’s gonna be a proper slog:lol:

It’s a slog that’s worth it that’s the beauty of the series.

Can be extremely difficult but fair that’s the best thing about these games nearly all deaths are because you messed up rather then the game being broken!

If I was getting a PS5 and I could only choose one game to have with it from the dozen or so launch titles for free (I’m excluding PS4 ports from that), it’d be Demon’s Souls.

I‘m glad that this small 2009 title that gathered steam from word of mouth and barely any marketing, is now remade and then given such prominence as a launch title and can be deemed a killer app game.

Most deaths... ill always think that some of the dragon bosses in the games are completely broken (but of course, not needed to fight them). Takes forever to kill and you get 1 shotted by them essentially.

Probably will go for this first I think.
Remember to buy your PSN wallet tops up from ShopTo. I found a neat trick, where you can buy codes for nearly £10 cheaper. So £50 for £42. Don’t forget that.

Is this a remake as in FF7R or a remake as in the same game but a bit prettier?

My copy has been sent, so no backing out now. In 2 minds though...looks amazing but out of all the souls games, this was probably the one I least enjoyed.

I’m hoping for some quality of life improvements but it seems pretty much shot for shot the same as the original. I personally would have preferred things like an Estus Flask, rather than sticking with consumables.

I watched the Digital Foundry interview with some of the team that made it, which was very interesting but I’m quite disappointed just how religiously they’ve stuck to the original.

Listening to them, it was like they were translating The Bible, rather than remaking a game...I get people love the original but if you are going to complain if the AI or move sets etc are tweaked then just play the original. Seems like a big wasted opportunity to me not to bring it up to modern standards.

Saying that, it looks absolutely stunning graphically and it’s sitting in my kitchen waiting to be played on Thursday.

Since the souls series (all of them), Bloodbourne and Sekiro all suffer from the AI, sometimes enemy placement and moveset types in one way or another...what is considered "modern standards"?

Especially, when there's not a single "modern" game that holds a candle to any of these. And those that might even be close, like Nioh and maybe The Surge, use all the same standards anyway.

I just found Demon’s Souls the heaviest going out of all of them. Some of ’checkpoints’ are too far apart and I really dislike the healing system as opposed to the Estus Flask, which was IMO a massive step up.

Basically I think they should have been braver and mixed it up a bit, rather than a ‘shot for shot’ remake.

I get that, fair points mate. Though I wonder if we'll see more health drops and stuff like that. From what I've seen, magic seems to have been given a big buff (way too big imo) so I doubt everything is completely unchanged.

Still, what a launch title!

And thats why Sony will continue to be my go to
Its been a pretty ’low key’ launch in terms of software and they’ve still dropped 4-5 rated games at launch. Playroom, Spider-Man, Demon’s Souls, Sackboy and even Bugsnax scoring well.

I know enough about Souls games to know that I will never play them (don't care for the idea of wiping on a boss for an hour) but happy this seems to be a huge hit for those that care about the series

Did the starting area just to try (playing Valhalla first) and holy shit, it feels incredible. So smooth, the combat feels so satisfying with the feedback to the controller, visually stunning. Probably the one souls game that i dont think i ever beat or played too much of, remember none of it so looking forward to it.

Yeah i agree with this. Dont get me wrong, i loved the original Demon Souls, but they've made some pretty important additions and QOL changes in the later Souls instalments so going back to the original formula now feels a bit meh

World tendency was cool, but implemented in an incredibly ham fisted way and it was annoying to have to kill yourself to get darker tendency just because you killed some phantom. Same with farming upgrade materials, which was a real pain for some of them.

I also dont get why they did not implement some stuff from DaS3 like weapon arts and functioning dual wielding.

The bigggest letdown though is that grass is back instead of estus. Having 99 healing items at hand trivialises much of the game

93 on metacritic . Wow!

I've only ever played Dark Souls 2 in that genre and just didn't get on with it. i'm wondering if I should give these types of games a go again.

You chose to play the worst in a series by a far margin, so definitely worth trying again

Can't say its too difficult after having played souls games for so long. To be fair though I tend to help someone out every boss fight to learn it before going in myself on my own. First area or 2 in every world are pretty simple, though I'm sure it'll get harder.

Barely scratched the surface of this yet but my god it's gorgeous. Also for me it has the best implementation of the haptics. The feeling when you backstab is . Also the sound design is absolutely amazing. Just playing this for 40 minutes last night has convinced me to get a pair of Pulse Headphones at some point.

The lack of bonfires is a pain though. I got all the way to the bridge in Boletaria and got flamed. Even with the shortcut its a fair trek back to that area.
