Honestly, I think Xenoblade is a bit of a Marmite game.
I love JRPGs, but the battle system in this series just turns me off. I played through most of Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii and Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U and I just couldn't bring myself to like it. It was hugely disappointing to me because everything else about the games is incredible. The environments, characters, even side quests, story and content is all top notch. But for me and some of my friends in particular, it comes down to whether you like or dislike the battle system and how much it effects your overall experience with the game if it's the latter. It's kind of a mix between real-time and turn-based. You can freely move your characters around whilst battling an enemy, but your characters auto-attack. It's a bit more of a strategic system where you need to toggle through the different options for different characters, which can create combos etc.
Some people probably love this about the game but I absolutely hate it. To me, it feels like being different for the sake of being different, while a more traditional combat system would have been better. I played a game called The Last Story on Wii which was similar, but they actually allowed you to change the combat from auto-attack to button presses which felt so much more natural and thus I preferred that game over Xenoblade in the end.
Hope you guys enjoy it though!
