One of my favourite United players of all time. I actually think he’s be great in this current side linking everything together.

Find the way he is talked about now by United fans remarkable. Didn’t do enough in 08/09 and we lost Tevez because of him when Tevez was a better player. 09/10 he was a real let down, if he was anything of a half-decent back up to Rooney we’d have won the league that year. Even 10/11 he was class in the first half but completely lost his place in the second half of the season. 11/12 he was practically a reserve player.

Just shows if you ooze class like he did fans will forget the constant stick he got. I’m happy Berbatov is remembered fondly by United fans now. Such a unique player.
But at the same time, Tevez was very underwhelming in his second season (and I think his first one was good, but not great.) Tevez started well with City but soon enough the attitude issues crept in. I don't think Fergie really got it wrong with Tevez/

Could tell before he signed he wouldn't make Ferguson happy. Threw his hands in the air at Spurs too much when things didn't go his way. Contrast with Cantona's on field antics pre-Utd, which, though over the top and inexcusable, were ultimately about getting a win and being top dog, precisely what SAF loved.

One of the most irritating players I’ve seen at United.

One of Fergie's worst decisions buying Berbatov instead of signing Tevez. Talented but so lazy and a terrible attitude in he never once tried to modify his game to play for United.

Much more talented players than him came to United and realised that they would also have to work for the club to make it and be successful.

How would Berbatov's laconic style translate to the high press which has become almost ubiquitous in today's game? Doubt he participates in it due to his extremely low work rates, but how'd he cope getting harried every time he has a sniff of the ball?

Berbatov was actually good under pressure.

An example of him being the only Fulham player with any composure away to Arsenal:

I reckon if we had started more technically gifted players like him and Nani instead of the likes of Park and Chicharito, we'd have put in a better performance against Barcelona.

Legendary footballer? Since when?
....Bulgaria's greatest? He is a legend according to Bulgarians.

The best modern Bulgarian player, the first Bulgarian to win PL.

Take nothing away from him, he worked hard. Saying he is lazy and bad attitude is just a stupid agenda.

Legendary ?

Yes lazy and a terrible attitude in that he never once realised he would have to earn his shirt at united to work hard for the team.

Instead he felt he just had to do what he had always done before and that is shocking.

Cantona was more talented yet still knew whdn he played for United he had to put the work in as well. Thats the difference

You must be new to football. Hristo Stoichkov was way better and is the greatest.

Sigh.

I'm asking you, how the feck a person can become a professional footballer of the highest level if he is lazy and has a terrible attitude?

Enlighten me, dude.

In the modern era, Berba is easily the greatest Bulgarian.

You can have more than one legend, you know.

The guy is a legend in his own right.
Stoichkov played for Barcelona until 1998. What is your definition of modern? Otherwise Cantona becomes redundant to United in the modern era when he infact is part of United’s modern history. Bloody hell SAF joined United in 1986.

Sorry but your definition of modern era is ridiculous.

I love Berbatov. I am aware that he should have been better for us but he wasn't bad like some people try to say. Plus watching him play was joy to watch.

They both are legends in their country but Hristo is undisputed no1, imo. And they are same era. It is not that Hristo played in 70s or 60s.

Yet another player who never lived up to expectations. Didn't do it for us. He was a different player for Spurs. We got a lot more out of Teddy!
I mean he did finish Premier League top scorer for us... one of only 5 players we've had do that for us (in the PL era)

Still different era of players.

The argument is here whether Berbatov is a legend. He is, doesn't matter legend of what scale, for Bulgaria or United or Spurs, he is one of the greatest Bulgarian to ever play football.

Strange signing.
Scored a hatrick against those wankers and won the PL. So it turned out to be a good signing.

Yeah I am not disputing either of them, I was disputing him being the greatest Bulgarian of the modern era.

It is concluded long time ago, the fee paid was worth it after that hat trick.

That is what a small time club would say. Oh we beat a liverpool once that's enough for us

Stoichkov probably in his prime during the 90s, Berba during the 00s.

I might be wrong about the modern part.

yeah, They are both the greatest Bulgarian in their respective generations.

To be fair though Berba is the last great Bulgarian footballer, after that it's been woeful for them.

One good season for us as top scorer. Wrong signing and overrated.
Even then I think he scored 20 in the league but he bagged 3 hattricks and one game where he scored four if I remember correctly

A monster of a talent who doesn’t get the love he deserves, but there were times when he really was too passive. Languid I believe is the term that was used during his late playing days. But my god his talent was immense.

Peak Berbatov v Peak Rooney would be an interesting debate.

People who call him lazy don't understand his perception of the angle of the direction of the ball and it's speed.
That's why he doesn't run after every ball. He knows he is not going to get there. What is the point in running and wasting your energy chasing a ball you are not going get?
It's very difficult to get the ball off him. He holds the ball very well. He can see space and movement a lot quicker than most players too.
Unlike players brought up in the PL he is not afraid to receive a ball under pressure from an opposing player. He has always said he is a creater of goals.
I think personally it was a mistake for him to even come to the PL. I am glad that he came to us as I always enjoy watching him play.

That's not an interesting debate at all. Peak Rooney was one of the best attacking players of the last 20 years. Peak Rooney could do, and quite often did, literally everything on the field. Peak Berbatov doesn't even come close.

Berba is a player that I never warmed up to. Didn't think we should have signed him from Spurs, didn't do anything to change my mind during his time here. Even that season he finished top scorer his goals were clustered within a small number of games and Chicharito scored many more important goals than him and was more impressive overall than him.

The only thing I ever liked about him was that, without a doubt, off the field he came across as a very suave, cool character, but even that doesn't matter when it comes to the fact that he should have never been here.

I’m a Rooney fan and agree that at his best Rooney was phenomenal and I even agree that Rooney was a more complete footballer — we all remember how desperately he wanted to play in midfield later in his career — but peak Berba v peak Roo in the final third is a pretty close call. But no one can deny how hot and cold he was throughout his career and that he was more a brute force than he was a creator of chances.

Roo the better overall footballer? Probably. He was insane at 16 and in his 30s was still putting in outstanding shifts in MLS, but peak v peak...don’t sell Berba short.

2 hat-tricks, scored 5 in one game. One of the hat-tricks was the 3-2 win over Liverpool.

Didn't really play that much that season all things considered. Little less than 2/3rd of the minutes in the PL. Features in 2 out 9 cup games (assist against Liverpool in one of them). Started in 6 out of 13 CL games, came on us a sub in one of them. Total amount played was 54%. Overall a goal or assists every ~120 minutes in his 4 seasons with us.

Legendary? What did he even do for Bulgaria? Throughout his time as the Bulgaria captain they didn't even qualify for any major competitions. He was scoring against bums in friendlies and qualifiers.:lol::lol:

Understandable if it's England/Spain/Portugal, you can say that. This is Bulgaria we're talking about, having a player representing their country in the biggest team in the world, he should make his country proud.

What he has achieved, No other Bulgarian has achieved, winning the premier league, golden boot. Let's be real here, from Bulgarian's perspective he is a legend.

I'd have liked to see him play under Pep. A team with possesion. I wonder how he would end up playing.

When you consider that Pep went for Zlatan at Barcelona, maybe whilst Berbatov was a less clinical player, he was also hell alot smoother.
