Is Jadon Sancho really worth the 100 plus million fee?

I never really argue with transfer value but to write this guy off and compare him to Kagawa & Mkhy is wrong. We have natural goalscorer Greenwood that his future will be a no 9, a left goalscorer winger Rashford and Martial who can cover the left and no9 role. We still need a creative player on the right flank.

His transfer value won’t matter anymore now because summer transfer window has passed means next year Dortmund won’t ask 100m anymore because the price will drop and Dortmund will definitely need the money since just like other clubs, Dortmund will also suffer without having fans in the stadium due to covid.
I think theyll keep him another season after next. They obviously have 120m in their heads and arent letting go and theyll buy into the what if we keep him and clubs finances recover bullshit we heard last summer.

Sancho is hardly set his mind back again on Dortmund and you think he will be willing to stay another season. Dont think they would like to keep him another year

If he was an ugly guy with no marketability he'd be worth about £60m. Very good player but his brand doubles his value.

It's not hard to look good in the Bundesliga, which has some league one level teams all playing high lines. Rashford would look world class in that league too.

Back on topic.

No, he isn't. He's overhyped and yet to prove capable of sustained success at the EPL level.

Nah.

For that amount of money you want an outstanding, world class player who can make not just an impact, but take your team to the next level. Someone who single handedly can win games for you. I don't want to pay that much money for 'potential talent'. Sancho is not worth it imo

It was so funny seeing people in the summer saying this was our one chance and clubs would be lining up to pay 150m for him next summer. Utter idiocy by manic depressed muppets.

Going to be interesting how Dortmund is going to play this out. I’m not surprised at all if they managed to keep him but that's probably because other clubs don't want to have big net spend.

There is no way Dortmund will not have financial issue by end of the season. This restrictions on the crowds due to covid will really put them into difficult situation, last season they lost about 40m euro and that's due to 2 months football with restriction on crowds, can't imagine what happened with 9-10 months restriction. At first I thought they won this by keeping Sancho but after knowing this restriction will likely continue to end of the season, I think they lost at the end.

The 96m offer they refused from Utd looks like one of the biggest feck ups in football transfer history.

Bet the owner can't sleep at night.

Yep.

You didn't need a degree in rocket science to see that this was how it was going to play out. He may or may not still come to us next summer, but the fact that we still have a spare spot in those front positions is telling. And as we didn't spend that much comparatively this summer window just gone, I'd still have us in pole position for when he does eventually leave. Chelsea are stacked, Madrid have eyes for Mbappe and are in the middle of an expensive stadium rebuild, Juve and Barca are broke. Bayern don't spend at that level and are similarly stacked as Chelsea. Liverpool maybe, but then they have Jota who plays a similar role, and is arguably more adaptable. He's persona non grata at City.

I don't see any of that really changing over the course of the next 6-9 months. The only thing that we need to do, is ensure that we finish in the top 4 and qualify for the CL. Otherwise, the move is dead and buried.

I'm betting the big clubs in particular are putting some very serious thought into how Covid19 will affect this season, where that will leave them and everybody else next summer, and how that impacts on transfer strategy. There was clearly an expectation from some this summer, when the worst of the restrictions were behind us and everyone was in a reopening mindset, that crowds would return to stadiums before too long. That was poor planning. The reality is that until mass vaccination has been carried out, the situation does not fundamentally change. This means either lockdown measures will stay in place, or they will be relaxed only to be followed by another wave of infections after 4-6 weeks, which will in turn bring back lockdown measures. While this goes on, the question will not be when to re-open stadiums, but whether football can continue at all (it probably can, given the effectiveness of the protocols in place since the spring). Mass vaccination as an accomplished fact will not happen until spring 2021 at the earliest. Which means a full season of TV, merchandise and sponsorship revenue only. The financial impact will be much worse than last season - and everyone is going to be worse off financially than they were this summer.

The effect this summer was not so much to drive down prices, but rather to greatly reduce the volume of trading. With less demand, it wasn't a good market to sell into. We ended up with neither a sellers market nor a buyers market: The buyers were fewer and less able to pay, the sellers had good reason to hang on to their assets until the market improved. There weren't that many deals that looked like cut-price. Even Championship clubs with a big payroll and no big TV money to rely on generally priced their top assets out of the market.

The big question is, are many clubs still going to be able to hang on to their assets for another year? If they aren't, and simultaneously the usual buyers have less money to spend than usual, it seems possible that prices could drop. (If one really wants to be positive towards Woodward & co (who does though), one could suspect that they decided to stick only to nice-price deals this summer, in anticipation of lucrative hunting grounds next summer. Saving up for Black Friday, as it were. )

He's young and lacking confidence, he'll be back to tearing teams apart soon enough.

Although I think the ship has sailed with United, someone will get a bargain, be about £60m + £30m in addons.

Same tbh. I never thought he was worth the figure quoted (but did hope we signed him) but am more relying on the thoughts of others as have never watched a full game with him and been overly impressed.

Dortmund on the brink of bankruptcy would be funny enough to cure the muppet hearts they crushed last summer. :keano:

Based on his form this season, it's a no, but at the same time, if a club thinks he's 'worth' it, then they will buy him.

During the summer, we obviously felt it was too much and Dortmund may now be regretting that they didn't accept the 90M bid we put in for him.

Unfortunately for them, I can't see him going for that much next season. Not because of his form as such, but because that'll be another year gone on his contract and I don't think he'll be extending again.

As I said, though, he's not in tremendous form this season but he's still one of the top young players in the world and that fact that he's a right-winger means we should still be looking to purchase him unless we have other plans.

I look at the money Kai Havertz went for and can't help but think we should be able to get Sancho around a similar price.

Guess time will tell.

I think we were right to stand firm over the ridiculous fee Dortmund were asking, in the circumstances at the time. If we can manage to get him this summer, it would be for a cheaper price. He would have less pressure on him due to the price tag, and he would improve us immensely.

actually think there is a good chance we can sign him in Jan, Dortmond obviously feel he has downed tools and might think the longer he goes the fee might go down, cant see him signing a new contract there and don't see the money coming back in to football any time soon.

for me Sancho has produced much more then Havertz which is why they wanted more, add in the english tax and its united after him then they are right asking for more for me, might have backfired on them now right enough.

Honestly when he turned up massively overweight this summer after pre season that was a bit alarming.

I think he's a great player and clearly talented, but I worry he might lack that bit of dedication required to keep at the top of your game.

No surprise that he's started this season slowly if he doesn't keep himself in peak condition. I do wonder whether he's a bit angry/upset at the moment that the united move didn't happen and he's sulking a bit, but honestly I think the club made the right move not giving into their demands.

We can go back in January if we really want him, and i'm sure they'll be a lot more flexible now.

Let's all laugh at Dortmund na na na na!

Looks like us standing firm on not over paying for players is already getting us out of potential feck ups.

Di Maria, Sanchez, Sancho(?).

Still not enough to want 40m more than what Chelsea paid.

Dortmund have managed to amass some of the biggest talents in football. At this rate even Sancho declining in value will be of no consequence. .

Have they though Halaand has a release clause ,
Bellingham has all to prove still. Sancho is the only one currently who would fetch big money but if he continues to falter this season his value would only go down they may have overplayed their hand last summer.

The more I reflect on this transfer and our general business, the more I think we performed better than we were made out to look.

- Grealish at 80m seemed high for all clubs, so you can grant us caution there. A great move to tie down the close 2nd quickly in VDB.
- Sancho we had every right to think Dortmund might cave with a late 90m bid, even if it was 50/50 it was worth pursuing out of chance.
-Traore/Pellistri were longer term youth assignments
- Telles was followed for a while, and we did well to not cave to silly buy-back options for Regulon
- Cavani may have been classed as a "panic" buy but I see this as more opportunistic. He would be a top asset for any club if he keeps fit.

My large annoyance is with the failure to tie down Upamecano when he had a release clause but all in all, we weren't as bad as people would claim.

Giovanni Reyna is criminally underrated here. He's already playing like an absolute boss some games and he's also only 18.

Oh I forgot about him but he is still at a developmental stage where I don't think Dortmund would sell him nor he would bring big money yet . My observation is Sancho is Dortmund's best asset currently to bring in big money and it seems they might have been too greedy for their own good last summer.

Its not really a question of whether Sancho is worth 100m +, the fact is we thought he wasn't and we didn't buy... the moving finger writes and having written moves on!

I agree with this. I was skeptical about Graelish at that price. Granted, he's proven me wrong this season, and fair enough to him. With the money he would cost that ship has probably sailed for the time being. However, I really like VDB and I think he has a lot to offer us.

Sancho, I now firmly believe he wasn't worth the money Dortmund wanted for him. Added to that, with the way things are going with his performances, and Covid, we might very well still end up getting him at a reasonable price in the end. I wouldn't be surprised to see him here next summer.

All in all, it wasn't a bad transfer window to continue building from. CB and a Matic replacement are the next major priorities.

But how many of those signings actually filled a gap that was in the squad last year, and really progress the team? To my mind, the only one is Telles. VdB is another exception as he provides a quality alternative to Pogba/Bruno where there previously hadn't been.

We needed to really improve the squad, not in terms of numbers alone but in terms of quality. Some of the starters we have right now would be squad players at the top teams. We needed to sign starters in those positions (specifically LB, DM, CB, RW) and we did not do that, but for Telles, and even that's a little up in the air with Shaw's return to form.

I think your assessment is fair. But united plans were screwed because a lot of money was demanded for quality players. I still do not know which DM (who is available and willing to move) would we go for, who is better than ours. Thomas Partey is not an upgrade on Matic or McT. Centre Back, we could have gone for unknown French talents but would they be better than we have, I still do not know. Upamacano was expensive and I still think he will come next summer. RW is a problem but we tried addressing by getting Usmane Dembele on loan (which would have been very shrewd) because the guy is a talent and having him on loan would have made us see whether he can adjust to riggers of Premier league or not.

I disagree about Partey. He is an upgrade of Matic & Scott imo. And imo we need him and he was available for 45m which affordable.

Looking at our XI against Everton, that should be our prototype in long term. 4231 with 2 high energy double pivot and playmaking/creative right winger. Partey & Sancho are in those category, they would have been considered as upgrade of Scott and Mata and would have transform our XI to title challenger level of XI this season imo.

I can understand the club isn’t willing to pay for Sancho but in my opinion this should have been expected or predicted earlier. I believe we extent Matic contract because we wanted to focus the money on RW instead of DM. But at the end we still failed to secure the RW.

When I've seen him play for England or Dortmund I thought he looked like a championship version of Rashford or Greenwood.

Muenier is complete shite and Hakimi's at Inter Milan. Brandt's good but somewhat inconsistent. Witsel's solid. Reus is still pretty good. Their best 4 talents are Haaland, Bellingham, Reyna and Sancho. Moukoko will likely join that list after his debut.
