I'm in the north west . I own 2 restaurants and 2 cafes . So the cafes can now open next Friday and the restaurants the week after
My family is in Derry. The wee brother used to work in the Leprachaun Cafe/restaurant before it closed. Are you around that long?

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Why can’t we stop travel to/from the mainland? It’s a win for the island of Ireland and a win for mainland U.K. they don’t want our infected and we don’t want theirs
You think the DUP would pass a bill which makes it harder to visit the UK mainland than it is to cross the Irish border?

For the same reason the Irish border wouldn’t be shut if cases were worse down south. Political suicide.

Well no, they are the ones that want to keep everything open at the moment.

as I said, if there’s a will there’s a way. The Will currently isn’t there. But if someone were brave enough to say, “let’s close the borders of the entire island to external travel, let’s get the island clean of infection like Australia, it’s better for our people”. I dont see why london or Dublin would argue against it

Completely agree and while closing the Irish border is virtually impossible stopping travel in and out of Ireland as a whole for a few months would be great

There’s been a bunch of scientists saying that since before the first wave. It won’t ever happen, though, because there won’t be the political will. In Dublin, or in London.

Even if we ignore the Anglo-Irish issues around shutting the North off from the rest of the UK, there’s freedom of movement within the EU to consider. The sort of border security needed to rid the island of Ireland of the virus goes against everything the EU stands for. Plus it would be economically catastrophic because of all the manufacturing in Ireland and the way we’re seen as portal to the EU mainland for so many multinational companies.

There is no way though. The majority of Stormount voted for 2 extra weeks lockdown but the DUP didnt get their way so abused their veto. Which is ridiculous since it was a Unionist motion ffs.
Nothing of note will ever get done until there is a shift in NI dynamics, which happily seems to be happening now. DUP are losing a lot of support right now but it would take moments of history in the polls for anything like this to be sanctioned.

An all island effort to contain the virus was what and still is required. The virus doesnt see borders and Dublin were all for a shared effort with Leo calling for it several times but of course Arlene and Co rejected the notion as politicising a virus wasnt beneath them.

Are you in the DUP? NI isnt an island is it? Therefore it doesnt have a mainland.
Thanks for the geography lesson.

Feel free to give the same lesson to @golden_blunder who first used the phrase in the post I was replying to and is actually from Northern Ireland (I think?) Which you’d have noticed if you weren’t thick as pigshit.

I have already had a convo with him about this erroneous statement in the past. He still hasnt shown me the Irish sea coastline of Fermanagh, Tyrone or Armagh

Strictly speaking, it doesn’t need to be an island for the UK to be considered “mainland”. Look up the dictionary definition.

Either way, it was a dick move to jump on those two words in my post and use them to insult me.

Seems like you two have your own thing going on here

I’m just interested. I’d have always referred to it as the mainland, seems logical and shipping/delivery wise what I always understood it to be.

You’re right. It’s completely and utterly pedantic. @Ramshock has obviously got out of bed the wrong side again

It is the mainland. He just doesn’t like to acknowledge that Northern Ireland is part of the UK.

To be expected really it just is not safe to open right now. My local coffee place had already said they were not going to open tomorrow as they were expecting another lockdown

Scaled to population, today's NI cases would be approx 1325 by ROI terms. Whereas today's actual ROI cases were 429. Last I saw their death rate was up to four times higher in this second wave than ROI's too.

In other words further action in NI was inevitable. The concern should be trying to make sure Christmas is as normal as possible rather than trying to pretend you can ignore the problem. Hopefully their dragging of feet hasn't done too much damage.

So does my accountancy office have to close? We aren't named on the list of businesses allowed to open, but then it didn't mention services have to close?

Advice has always been if able to work from home do so as far as I know.
We should be working from home be employer doesn't let us due to the security aspects of having clients records out of the office.

So for us it's work in the office or not at all

Yeah sounds like an excuse to be honest when you have government offices working from home.
