Whilst I generally agree, and the bickering about games is pretty silly, Demon's Souls is easily one of the best launch games over the last few generations.

It shouldn't be considered any other way.
I actually think PS5 shades the 'games' front so far, you can't deny astrobot is something special and whilst not for me, Dark Souls is obviously huge and was already considered one of the best games made.

But Xbox hasn't got a games problem for anybody with gamepass, including first party (thanks to the free upgrades). It just hasn't got that next gen shine because of how they've timed things / the less 'generational' approach and obviously the Halo delay (which has obviously really hurt them)

Had Ori been timed to release last week rather than earlier in the year, that'd be rightly up with Demon Souls.

Give it a rest. Can’t take the United Hour podcast seriously anymore when you spent most the match posting in here rather than watching the match.
Elvis is welcome on the show whenever he wants!

I'm not on this week's episode so didn't have to pay attention thankfully.

Let's break it down and see who won launch:

Xbox
Positives:
Smooth as feck to set up. Not one issue mentioned here.

Negatives:
Game crashed for redlambs a couple of times.
Settings a click too far away for redlambs

PS5
Positives:
Astro, the game that looks like an upscaled mobile phone game with haptics, is quite fun, at least while the launch hype is there
Afro still hasn't got one

Negatives:
Nightmare to set up and get your games on.
Loads of people complaining about games uninstalling, even if they haven't 'copied', which shouldn't matter anyway.
Elvis can't even download two games he wants.
Reports of bricking if you put a foot wrong.

Xbox wins launch

Don't the sales tell the story? It's you who is desperate, you need validation you've made the correct decision in getting an Xbox.

It's fine, you've made the right choice.

You're the only person here who even thinks there is a console war going on
Great post.

I mean, I don't think it actually has a games problem. Even I've been finding things to play, despite already playing a hell of a lot of those games.

It is a little dull on that front though, especially if you are coming from the PS4 expecting to be wowed. Same old Xbox games mostly. However, as you said above, this is the launch window and if we are being serious for a split second, I think so far it's been better than I expected in terms of games to play and niggles. Considering the world we live in right now, it's been a great couple of weeks for gamers (especially me, as I also got a 3070 in my PC ).

feck knows

It sounds like I spend a lot, but to be honest my PC hasn't been upgraded in 6 years so I was due a treat. Also, the Xbox is really for my boy as a birthday/Xmas present and the PS5 is a christmas present for the missus. On the game front, I don't tend to rush to pay full price for every new release, and having a PC (and all the much cheaper games on it) and the gamepass on Xbox, it's covered us. My missus buys her own games.

So yeah we are a family of gamers so a lot goes into it, but not as excessive as it may seem ;)

My eldest progressed really far into qualifying for the Fortnite World Cup, and he'll whoop most of us at CS:GO. My youngest plays on an insane sens mouse and keyboard since 6, and recently took out a galleon by himself on Sea of Thieves. My missus is about to be heard screaming at Demon's Souls right now as a few of us play phasmophobia.

If anything, I play less than anyone!

(Btw so we don't sound quite so bad, I'm currently teaching one boy guitar and the other keyboard, and they are both talented artist and model makers. I'm not the worst dad in the world!)

I literally have no time to play all the Xbox games I want to. Whenever I switch on I'm sucked into Horizon

Good innit. You gonna jump on the DLC deals? £6 for Lego Horizon.

Think someone I know has picked up the ultimate edition for my Christmas. It's on game pass but would be good to own once it's removed and the new one out. Think it's cheap in the black Friday deals.

For what it's worth it won't get removed from gamepass mate as Microsoft owns Playground. Think it'll stay on there unless they come up against some licensing issue.

Oof, this one has the "Optimised for Xbox Series X" badge on it too.
I don't think people here know what that means.

That isn't Microsoft saying it's optimized for Xbox over PS5 or some sort of marketing to suggest Xbox have done a deal with the devs. It's just so Xbox owners know that it's a next gen title that has been optimized for Series S/X rather than being a backwards compatible game from Xbox One

And DF had this to say earlier

There's no doubt that on paper the Xbox Series X is more powerful," Leadbetter said.
"However, speaking to developers, the development environment they're dealing with...some people seem to be extremely happy with it, other people are having problems with it. Microsoft has moved away from what was previously the XDK, which was specific for Xbox, to the GDK, which is a more general development environment for PC, Xbox Series S/X, and Xbox One.

"The long-term win with the GDK is that you're going to be able to develop for and deploy for all of these different systems. But in the short-term, I have heard some developers having some problems with it, and whether all that is going to manifest in final games is the big question."
Horizon 4 looks miles better than Dirt.

Yeah been hearing that for a while. PS5 has that familiarity with PS4 which as the leading console devs of course love, Xbox is a bit trickier as devs are being asked to adopt and learn something new. And that the tools in the GDK aren't quite as mature yet.

That extra complexity in the short term especially in a COVID year might have a bit of a knock on effect (and for the most part seems pretty minimal anyway) short term

It's a long term play that makes lots of sense.

It's not so much that it's something new, it's more that they have to account for all the systems. PC is a different beast from consoles, even if the code is the same, as you have so many configurations to account for. However it really is an issue that the memory is different on the S too.

The X is really no different to the PS5 to work with, sure the SDK may be different, but the hardware is pretty much the same bar Sony's I/O. But going across the platforms means a lot more.

It goes back to what I originally said about the X/S differences, console developers are used to closed systems.

But, outside of the S issue, surely it's a good thing for devs that Xbox and PC tools are being brought together? Some of those games now will hit PC that wouldn't before, reduces duplication for those that will, and should hopefully mean we see more PC releases aligned with console (when in the past some would not come or come a lot later)

I understand in the short term where a game could have before concentrated on X and PS5 they now need to account for PC but in the long run I can't imagine it's much of an issue?

The S I can see as a potential bottleneck but right now all these games are cross-gen anyway and they have to account for PS4/Xbox One and Pro/One X. Yes it's another sku to aim for, but ultimately it sits between last gen and new gen so shouldn't be a big issue? Longer term, sure (I don't know enough about it so will take your word for it)

The games are traditionally made on PC anyway, in fact the dev kits are nearly always desktops that simulate the console power. Take one of the most well known emulators, the Dolphin. That was merely Nintendo's devkit SDK, the actual devkit (and I still have one) is a specially built PC. I also own an original green clear 360 devkit, and guess what's inside?

The tools were never separate, the code is mostly the same (it's used to be an endian issue, I don't even think that matters any more). DirectX/Windows has always been the MS way, OpenGl and variations used to be consoles. However these days they are pretty much the same.

I understand in the short term where a game could have before concentrated on X and PS5 they now need to account for PC but in the long run I can't imagine it's much of an issue?
Think of it this way...you are a console developer who is used to working within a set system. Set boundaries. Now you have to work with a virtually unlimited combination of machines? Now that's not such a big deal as all of us cut our teeth in PC development, indie work, some of us emulators which goes way deeper. But when you think about the pressures of releasing an ever increasingly complex product, over multiple systems, at the same time, with as few bugs as possible? All on a ridiculous schedule made by non programmers? Well, ask anyone in software development how that feels

The S I can see as a potential bottleneck but right now all these games are cross-gen anyway and they have to account for PS4/Xbox One and Pro/One X. It's not a different "sku" in terms of what it takes to work with. It's a really good machine that you don't even have to think about in the pipeline, as it just works. The problem and huge mistake is solely the memory.

Ram is used for many things in games, as in all other applications, but one of the big things it impacts is level design for example. If you have less space to load into, you have less space to plan for...you see how that potentially holds back the X? Now sure, it's all well and good saying "well PC games have done that forever" and that's true, that's completely right, however we are talking about a console here. We aren't talking about a PC, it's a mistake to treat them the same in terms of next gen consoles just as it's always been a mistake to compare them for many reasons. We don't plan and design games on GB level, not even a MB one. Each and every byte is accounted for, and you have to obviously plan for the lowest.

The S was almost the perfect plan, a really good idea that stuck to 1080p @60fps (which FINALLY console gamers are beginning to understand the fuss) with slightly toned down graphic capabilities of the next gen X? That's a machine that makes sense, a machine that blows Sony's no disc system away. But...but...the memory issue IS a deal. It's a crutch that really didn't need to be there. Even if they chucked an extra £20 on each machine to pay for that 6gb, we would be laughing.

But, again I've said it before and I'll keep saying it, the X/S are seriously well designed units. They are impressive what they can do in those boxes, the X in particular is a masterpiece of design. The PS5 really does have the best architecture though, it is easily the most "next gen" in terms of the ridiculous I/O of that ssd, but it feels underdeveloped as a unit. Whereas the X is like the Gamecube in terms of having more power than it should packed in so neatly and well designed and less chance of loud noise and failure. I fix consoles for people all the time, and traditionally it's the MS machines I do most, however this gen I think the PS5 will have way more problems over the coming years.

That's probably because you don't actually use the thing anywhere near as much. You sound like a twitter denialist "oh mine is working, so there's no problem here!"

What games are you playing, what have you tried? How much space do you have left?
You’re probably wrong. I’m playing it for hours every day, being lockdown and all. About 30 hours in to Valhalla and still playing WZ most days. Also played Horizon 4 a bit. 412GB free.

Not even kidding when I say I’ve played it for at least 12 hours today, including last night well in to the morning

Yeah, so you've been sticking to first party and new games. We have <100gb left. The Surge 2 keeps crashing btw, you should try it it's a great game. You might get good.

Now this I respect! Good man

BTW do you have a laptop/PC available? Even if it's a bit old and shit?
