Completed the game with a str/dex build as I wanted to avoid "ez mode". Turns out the bosses aren't the hardest thing about the game at all - the levels are. I cleared most of the bosses within a try and my first playthrough was 30 hours.

It is interesting to see how much the difficulty has been ramped up in Soulsbourne games since.

I don't know whether it's rustiness on my part, but I'm finding it more difficult than any From game (I've not played Sekiro).

I plan to really immerse myself in it this weekend so I hope I break through soon. I follow a similar route with Souls.

The only souls game I've really played is Bloodborne which I completed way back when, but haven't touched one since. What counts as an easy mode build in this one... because if I play it, that's 100% the build I'll use. :D

 Magic build apparently. Or you could do a strength and magic melee build that's a bit more of a compromise. Was tempted to give that a go when I picked up the crescent falchion but decided against it.

To be honest I'm a tad disappointed by the gameplay and overall level design but it's nice to finally experience the one that started it all.

I'd give the game an 8/10. Dark Souls is my 1st in the genre and it's impressive how much they were able to improve from Demon's Souls.

Hit my first brick wall yesterday with Flamelurker. Lost 17,000 souls in the first attempt. He's wiped the floor with me another half a dozen times since. The thing is I think he's beatable and I have got him down to half health once just locked on and rolling but a swipe or 2 and I'm toast.

Oh and I had no idea about this world tendency thing until I started getting one hit killed by those tunnel dwellers on the way back to the boss. Seems that dying in human form makes the world go black and the enemies harder. Didnae know that. Ended up going to 2-1 again to kill the new demon that had spawned at the bottom of the lift near the start to restore it back.

I might explore a new area and level up a bit more before taking him on again though. I hear the Valley of Defilement is fun. :smirk:

I feel like I've hit the wall really early in this game. Obviously I've found other Souls games hard but for some reason I am really struggling with this one.

I do think part of the issue is I'm playing for short sessions in the evenings when I'm tired and my hope is I'll get more in the flow over the weekend when I can dedicate a couple of hours to it.

Would you recommend doing all of Boletaria after beating Phalanx or would you go elsewhere for a bit?

The bosses definitely became a lot harder after Demon's Souls. I only completed it once on the PS3 but I don't remember any major struggles with the bosses. Valley of Defilement was an absolute pain to get through though, probably the hardest or most annoying area in any From Soft game, I guess unless you do Blighttown with its original framerate.

My experience is skewed because dark souls was my first game, but I think I found Anor Londo and some other parts of Dark Souls to be way more annoying. The archers and O&S gave me so much hell.

Thinking about it, it's a good idea to give the series a rest. I'm really looking forward to Elden Ring and From's take on open world games.

I made the mistake of wasting hours in 1-3 - trying to get to the boss only to die in a couple of hits. I see online that it's generally recommended to go 2-1, then 3-1, 4-1, 5-1. I'd be inclined to agree. If you want to Farm for souls early on 4-1 with the rolling skeletons are your best bet.

I've started a new save and unlocked Phalanx last night. On my previous character I couldn't do any damage to Tower Knight.

Do you have any tips for dealing with dogs? They absolutely wrecked me on 2-1 and under the bridge on the way to Tower Knight.

There are short sequences in all games that are annoying, like the archers as you say. To Tomb of Giants would be another. But with Valley of Defilement it's pretty much that entire world. At least both 5-1 and 5-2 were terrible for me.

Trying not to aggro all at the same time helps. I let them pounce on me while retreating with my shield up before attacking them while they're recovering from their pounce . They're classic Dark Souls fare and you'll get the timing soon enough.

Yeah they are the least enjoyable areas for me, along with 2-2. I really enjoyed the entire Tower of Latria stages including the final boss ;)

Right. Never played a Soulsborne game and was tempted to hop on at Demon's Souls, but hearing about no fecking checkpoints coupled with its ruthless reputation for being absurdly difficult has me questioning whether I should or not.

Is this one of these Git Gud deals?

So I was really struggling getting into this. I picked the Knight class to try something new but i hated how slow I moved. I kept getting rekked by Tower Knight so last night I decided to start a new save as a Magician.

I've never used magic in a Souls game but I do like it. Also feels a lot nicer to play with a character that doesn't move like molasses. Working my way back though the castle and already found places I missed first time through.

Still feel like I'll struggle against Tower Knight though. Found it barely took any damage and it was hard to read it's patterns to get closer to it.
The character class has nothing to do with movement speed: it's all about equipment load. Put heavy armour on that magician of yours and it will be exactly as slow as the Knight was, and vice versa: strip the Knight and it will be plenty snappy.

I don't think you can. The door to world 1-3 won't unlock until you've killed an end boss from another world. I think like others have said it's worth dipping your toe into the other worlds. 2-1 was pretty easy and likewise 1-2 but then I am playing as a Royal.

I think the difficulty is overhyped. Take your time, keep your shield up and you'll be ok. The checkpoint thing is overhyped as well as the levels aren't that big individually, you can usually just rush past everything to retrive souls after death and there are plenty of shortcuts to get back to certain areas (e.g. I can get back to Flamelurker in about 1 min from repsawn with little difficulty).

Also, if you make sure you keep using your souls to level up your character you'll soon be OP for levels that caused you trouble early on.

I would say get it and start as a Royal to ease you in. I've played them before using melee but thought I'd give this a try because a) it's something different and b) i'm too much of a pussy now

Absolutely this @b82REZ . You need to keep your equipment burden below 50% to be able to move and roll properly.

This explains it better

I'm sure plenty of people will have told you this already, but it really isn't absurdly difficult. Not even close. It doesn't require the lighting reflexes or extreme levels of coordination that so many of video gaming's toughest challenges do. It simply requires a good level of concentration and persistence. If you want a game that doesn't set you back and demand you learn as you progress, you'll get frustrated. If you accept that, you'll find that it really isn't as hard as some claim and by the end you'll have surprised yourself and you'll feel ready to take on similar games. The most important is that you enjoy it of course.

Now of course there are some very difficult boss fights in the series but Demon's Souls is arguably the most lenient of them all in that area, at least if the remake hasn't changed that significantly. So I wouldn't be too discouraged. If you feel like you want to jump in but are intimidated by the difficulty hype, just take the plunge and see where you end up. I was in a similar situation once and I'm glad I did, as From Soft have become easily one of my favourite studios since.

I kind of think that the original Demon's Souls (haven't tried the remaster) is the only genuinely hard game in the series. The rest have tough moments but with the other games there is the feeling of constant progression. This game will punish you if you've leveled correctly and punish you twice for leveling poorly. Choosing Thief alone for my maiden play-through probably added an 10 extra hours. Not understanding World Tendencies almost locked me out completely (until I managed to beat the 4-1 black phantom). Definitely a unique experience.

The original Demon's Souls was very much a niche title, so it could be possible they toned down the diff for what is now a flagship release game for a new console gen. I also found the original quite challenging at times if I remember correctly.

 ah yeah sorry about that. For all the bruising though, it was the most rewarding of the series. The cumbersome level design, the clunky healing all adds to it. And you don't get that same horrible and exhilarating I'm too far from home I'm too far from home feeling with the bonfires design in later games. Lean into the punishment I say.

Mechanically and aesthetically it's still the most interesting. It doesn't have the same smooth flowing level design of Dark Souls but as this ambitious Brazen Bull monstrosity it's one of the great video games. The world tendencies stuff still seems like a madness to me, the complexity and level of concealment is genius. "Mama why has the skellington turned red now?"

On the other hand, the bosses are far easier than in any of the subsequent games. Its hardest bosses - Flamelurker, Gargoyles, Old King Allant - would be mid-range at best in any of the others.

I think once you know how its basic systems work, Demon's Souls is the easiest game of the series. It is, however, the most obscure, with a lot of completely unexplained mechanics. You can play through the game without realising World Tendency even exists. Good luck upgrading your weapons: different weapons have different upgrade paths, the materials are hard to come by and often finite - if you're unlucky, you simply can't get a Pure Darkmoonstone in a given playthrough -, and very little of this is communicated to you in any way.

Once you know all these things, though... you can jump between five different worlds - if you find one too hard, you can progress in another one or just farm it. It's not like Dark Souls where you can get stuck, say, at the first Blighttown bonfire, unable to climb back up to the Depths or get down to the bottom. You have basically unlimited healing items. You have the easiest bosses in the series.

I was intrigued by this, so i watched a trailer of the gameplay. All i saw was a knight in armour walk up to enemy's and do a spinny chop on them with his sword. Looked very boring. Surely there must be more to it than that?

I'm making myself sound more newbie than I actually am. I know the speed is tied to the weight. My OCD wouldn't let me continue too long with him only wearing bits of armour so I could roll properly, and considering I felt the class was a bit boring I figured I'd try a new style as I've never used magic in a Souls game.

I know your usual tips about trying to fight enemies one on one but with the dogs they seem to rush me as a pack and I cannot for the life of me figure when to drop my guard to attack them, because as soon as I do they maul me.

Like I've said, I don't think I'm helping myself in some respects, like playing when I can barely keep my eyes open. I think I'll just hold out until Saturday afternoon now and have a proper session.

I think I'm just getting frustrated because I did Git Gud and I seem to have lost all the skills I acquired since I played Dark Souls 3.

You watched the trailer that was in god mode as someone steam rolled though the tutorial area. That is not a good representation of what the game is like and does make it look boring.

Watch someone like Lobos play it and you'll see how it can be played and why it's so highly regarded

The bosses are certainly easier, with relatively simple telegraphed patterns. Though the trek back to them is usually more arduous and precarious and the shortcuts are generally not as lenient. True about the obscurity, and poor item management is a killer in Demon's - save some grass. It being the first of its kind made it more difficult too but even returning to it now it's the only game in the series that I haven't been able to no death run. As you say that's likely down to slower levelling up.

The skellingtons inflicting roll damage through the guard was a terrible realisation.

I completely agree with this assessment.

The QoL changes that came with Dark Souls certainly makes those titles feel a bit more user friendly and by extension, easier.

My experience with Demon's Souls on PS3 was about an hour worth of getting killed by a Black Knight before I gave up. I didn't have that same barrier to entry with Dark Souls.

Playing the remaster now, I still feel like Blueprint could have offered some of those improvements, but with how much the community would likely push back for making the game too easy they probably thought against it.

There really is. I have never played a souls game before this because I found the idea boring. But whilst the combat is pretty much light attack, heavy attack, parry and block, the timing and patience involved is super rewarding. Assassins creed has a similar combat system, but this just feels so weighty and considered. I don’t think the game would be for everyone, but the atmosphere is fantastic, the graphics and sound are just unbelievable.

I think there are some definite improvements this remaster needs. Like the bow aiming is still terrible, so is the collision detection and largely the A.I

The biggest problem I have with this game though (and I expect not a single other on here will have noticed or care about it ) is the roll delay. Even though it's 60fps, there's still a button press delay on the roll which is likely down to it being the same button as the run, and they haven't adjusted the time held. It really bothers me as it feels so unresponsive compared to the rest of the game. It's an oversight.

All in all it's still an epic remake though, really well done. I'm not sure what people expected on the difficulty front as we've all played enough souls now to be used to this stuff

Oof. I don't think I could walk around with that much. I get twitchy when I get over 10k
I couldn’t help it, I kept on getting progressively further throughout the level and having to pick them up, got to the boss died, picked them up again got him to like 1% died and then on my way back rolled off a cliff.

Also the FOV and camera height are all wrong in lock on mode.
