Those wage demands are crazy, if they were significantly lower I'd love him as a DM and additional CB cover.
Why would you want him as DM? He has never played that position at Bayern.

He plays DM for his nationalteam. And it seems like it's his wish to play there in the future at his club as well. Gotta say, his qualities in midfield are kind of average. He doesn't stand out there at all. The only thing considering his DM qualities is his versatility, which is very rare to find imo. He's a great LB, a good CB and an average midfielder. Pretty sure he could play as a winger too. Thing is, nowadays, he doesn't stick out on any of these positions. His qualities probably suit LB best, but since Bayern got Davies, only time will tell if he will ever play LB again.

It's unclear. Media leaks suggest that he wants something in the vicinity of 20+ million euros a year, which would see him on par or even ahead of Lewandowski, Neuer and Müller, with a huge loyalty bonus and a couple of millions for his new agent Pini Zahavi on top. Reportedly, his camp argues that since Alaba never cost a single euro in transfer money, he's entitled to a massive pay rise.
Alaba claims these figures that got leaked to the press are bullshit, so make of it what you will.

Bayern reportedly offered 11 Euros + up to 6 million in bonuses for 5 years, Alaba would be 34 by the end of that contract. Very fair offer in my opinion, given that he hasn't been world class for a while and stagnated quite a bit over the last 3 or 4 years.

Alaba also was upset that Bayern took too long to start the negotiations. He claims the club made its first offer a year ago, bevore corona, so he won't allow that excuse for a reduced salary. He fails to mention that a year ago his overall level of play was far removed from being worth 10+ million. Then he spouted the usual emotionalized "I only want respect and appreciation" bullshit to seem less greedy. It's been a shitshow.

He is versatile as feck and it's difficult to replace a player like him because in a pinch he can slot in nearly anywhere, but if he demands more than 17 mil a year he's being deluded. He hasn't played like a world class LB recently, isn't a top CB and just straight up too bad to start in midfield. I'd like for him to stay because he is homegrown and strengthens any squad, but I won't shed tears if he leaves.

It's been a smouldering issue for years. Reports and rumors indicate that Alaba is miffed because he was promised to play more midfield when he signed his last extension and that, if multiple top clubs offer him a contract, he'd favor the club that would promise him a midfield role.
Again, take everything with a grain of salt, but he's never made it a secret over the course of his career that he fancies himself a midfielder rather than a defender.
Thanks for the detailed reply. That is indeed a massive amount of money.

Crazy that he’s demanding that much, top player though he has been, he’s not as good as he was like you say.

Whilst he has never played there for his club he has played CM for his country, (note not DM) where he is expected to do a lot more in an attacking sense, which I think lead to the judgements of him being average.

His attributes would seem to suggest he could excel in a DM position asked to cover space, intercept, tackle and break the lines with good through balls.

He's mobile and obviously defensively sound, and regarded as one of the smartest tactically astute footballers around. Think he'd excel there, however like I originally stated it would have to be a big climbdown from the wages he reportedly wants.

I think you'd be disappointed because "defensively sound" is not the first, second or even third thing that comes to my mind when I think about Alabaplaying centrally. Even as LB he was never really known for being a defensive beast.

Why would you want to sign a 29yo to play him out of position? And why would you want the Austrian CM and not the Bayern LB?

Oh I assumed the Austrian CM and Bayern LB were the same person, with the same qualities
He is not a CM and never has been, yet he insists on playing there.

It's also not like he has all the qualities needed to succeed there. Compared to Kimmich, who is the prototype of a worldclass FB and worldclass CM, he's worse in almost every area of the game.

Last thing i read was that, apparently, one of Bayern's first moves in the negotiations was asking Alaba whether he'd consider a switch. If that's true I get where his sentiment of lack of respect by the club comes from. Another piece to the puzzle may be Brazzo and the huge fee he paid for Hernandez, which is yet to be anywhere near worth it. Vacating a starter spot at LB/CB would guarantee more playing time for Hernandez. If that's a factor, it's another point for Alaba's lack of respect list.

Honestly, I don't understand Alaba at all. He is well respected and loved in Munich, within the team and also by the fans. Bayern is currently probably the best team in Europe and guaranties him further silverware.
The offer is, as the Bayern president put it, definitely competitive and his contact would run 5 years until he turns 34. He then would be a Bayern legend too.

He will be 29 years old at the end of season. Thus doesn't have the time to come into a new or rebuild project that might take years. He doesn't fancy England (Liverpool or City) but the Spanish top teams hardly are in the position to pay significantly more than Bayern offered. Barcelona is in a difficult rebuilding process without having major funds available and Messi might leave on a free. Madrid is in a better position but according to Marca not willing to pay more than Bayern offered.

My best guess is that Alaba will eventually sign a new contract with Bayern. It's still his best option.

Are you sure? Isn’t that what Ramsey is earning at Juventus?
He is easily worth that money if the new club does not pay a transfer fee.

World class left back that doesn’t want to play left back any more. A good ball playing centre half, and an average midfielder. He’s not worth the money in my opinión.

No. The Austrian CM is average, the Bayern LCB good/very good and the Bayern LB very good/great.
Both sides look bad, but I think Alaba will get the short end of the stick. Which is a shame since he seems to be a great guy by all accounts.

He was a top-2 LB along with Marcelo 5-6 years ago when there weren't many other prime candidates for the position. Not convinced by his performances in midfield, though he can put in a shift as a CB.

Obviously he's still going to do well in that spot even today, but don't see many clubs going for him with those wage demands. City can probably make do with Cancelo/Zinchenko/Mendy/Ake competing for LB until Walker starts losing his legs and Cancelo has to be stationed full-time on the right. PSG maybe?

It'll be an eternal mystery to me why he insists on playing midfield when he clearly has to be in the defensive line. Sure, he's playing midfield for the Austrian NT. But... come on, it's the Austrian NT... it's not like they have an abundance of world class midfielders.

Kicker reports that Bayern claims to have played with open cards, informing Alaba about all steps of going public with the retraction of the offer. So, basically both sides calling each other liars now. It's sad. I don't blama Alaba, I blame his greedy agent. It's clear to me that the agent has a bad influence and wants to drive the price up to increase his commission. And this is exactly why club bosses don't like agents. And this is also why Alaba has to go, for cheap during the winter if need be. This type of blackmail cannot be tolerated. Players have to realise that it's them making the decisions, not their agents. Their agents should never be the ones making the decision. It's nice for Alaba to be able to ignore everything and pretend he's not part of it, but he needs to grow up and realise he is the center piece of those negotiations and at some point he has to assume responsibility for his agent's actions. Either own it or fire the twat and move on with realistic options.

Ramsey earns €20+ million/year at Juventus?!

If so, then Juventus is just downright crazy.

Lewandowski earns less than that at Bayern and the Club has no intention of letting anyone earn more than he does.

No, Ramsey earns 7 million euros net, around 10 gross.

A few days ago Juventus published the official quotes in the shareholders meeting.

That seems much more believable to be honest.

yes, however it will has the same impact like Sanchez's salary in the dressing room. City probably can afford it, but it will upset KDB big time with that salary. In the end I think he will stay.

It'd be a shame if we let him go for free, but I wouldn't be to sad to let him go, especially after all that drama. Hernandez has all the talent to play on the required level as a center back alongside another right footed player (Süle also has a lot of potential), Davies would have his spot as left back and Pavard could also make his name as the other center back if Süle isn't good enough. We'd need another backup left back and center back, and if everything goes wrong go for Upamecano/Schuurs and keep Boa for another year or two. Alaba is an exceptional passer from the back, but he is not world-class at actual defending.

I'd keep away from Schuurs for a while. He was okay against Liverpool, but very far from secure, many (fans) at Ajax are keen to replace him because of the goals conceded after his mistakes. He's still very young, so perhaps he could grow more composed, but he's definitely not a new De Ligt-like prodigy or anything that some pundits seemed to say after Liverpool.

Wasn't Süle statistically the best CB in CL the year Liverpool won it ('19) – beating an in form Van Dijk? How did he come back from injury?

It is funny how Lucas and Pavard were bought as CBs but only play as fullbacks for Bayern though haha, I really miss Lucas at Atleti, I was so looking forward to a Gimenez-Lucas partnership in the back for a long long term.

———————————

Before Telles I thought Alaba would make a great buy, because of his versatility, being able to play CB, LB and even midfield. Because of his profile and skills he could be a great anchor in midfield, but chances are he needs to play in a more ready time to fill a somewhat new position (outside of some games he doesn't carry Austria from there, for example). This year he seems less sharp defensively than last, but maybe that's partly due to the short summer and all his behind the scenes contract chaos. Lack of security does do a number on you mentally.

On PES he'd easily solve the United midfield (although they're already good there in the game) or defense, adding a great passer of the ball in any of his roles. Especially in the 3 at the back formation him and Tuanzebe flanking Maguire/Lindeløf would suddenly turn United's defense so pacy and technically potent.
But in real life he's probably better off (as midfielder) in an almost done-squad. I can see him making Barcelona's central or Man City's defensive midfield tick (again).

His multi-functionality is so overrated. I have read a lot about his supposed TOP level in differente positions, but actually he has been TOP player only at one of them.

TOP at left back.
Good at the centre back.
Average at midfield.

And even so, his best days at left back i think that has gone. He hasn't worth the amount of money that is asking.

Yeah I can definitely see this happening
Have you or anyone seen him actively? I thought he was meant to be a very good defender capable at left back and even a midfield role. If this is true and he's injury free, he would be an outstanding purchase for any club let alone one like Chelsea who can do with another good CB and defensive midfielder.

Could believe this, they do have ambition after all. We'll still have Jones, Rojo stinking up the place and be forced to play 2 dms to protect our slow and error prone starting CBs.

I haven't seen him but last season saw a few Bayern fans say he was their best CB. Alaba is not good as a DM from other posts I've seen. I think Chelsea will just get Rice for that. Would be a scary team

How outstanding is the purchase if you have to pay him €20m p.a. over 5 years with an additional €20m going to his agent?

€40 million for one of the best defenders in the world... seems pretty outstanding when you consider David Luiz cost £50m at one point... and John stones was about £45 wasnt he

I'll get battered for this but ... do we want him. An example of someone coming here to be the star and make money.

I'm conflicted myself as he is a class player. I just think it is a slight departure and takes up space for players that we really need.

If he in a pogba replacement I can't help but feel we can do better in cm if we really think about it

I dont think we would be offering so much more money than say Real or Chelsea or City so If he chose to come here (dont think he would) then I think most would want him as he would probably have turned down at least comparable offers from other top teams
