The same goal in two consecutive games and was clear as day the ball was going in.

De Gea would probably have got less criticism for the free kick if he had just stayed rooted to the spot.

Get nowhere near it and people would have shrugged and said it was just a perfectly placed kick from a dead ball specialist. Because he managed to *nearly* save it he gets more criticism, because it then looks like he could have done more. And hell, maybe he could have done more if he is getting his hand to the ball. But the reality is that he was still doing well to even get that hand to a freekick that would have beaten pretty much any goalkeeper you want in goal.

As for the corner, it was quite similar to another we conceded not too long ago. Flat corner into the area and De Gea is somehow expected to teleport his way through the mass of six bodies in front of him to get to a ball arriving in front of his near post before any of those other players do. Either he goes for it (and gets blamed for being weak when he predictably doesn't claim it) or he stays on his line (as other more dominant keepers regularly do in that same situation too) and gets blamed for not going for it.

Because people think De Gea doesn't go for crosses enough, any cross he doesn't go for is his fault, ignoring the fact that there are some balls he should absolutely not go for. It's not like there weren't already four United defenders against the two Southampton attackers all going for the same ball in front of him.

They were two excellent set-pieces from one of the best set-piece takers in the league. But because people have a pre-existing narrative about De Gea, it's all on him. Even Roy Keane (who has previously been vicious in his criticism of De Gea) didn't blame him:

But no doubt the anti-De Gea brain trust will quickly be in to tell us that not only was it entirely De Gea's fault, but that they themselves would have actually kept it out as they understand being goalkeeping more than he does and/or that De Gea has actually been a liability across his entire career, even in his best seasons. Because that's how braindead agenda-posting works.
Here here. De Gea has made mistakes before but today wasn’t his fault.

Ward Prowse/Saints exposed him completely on his weaknesses. These corners were on purpose specifically for today. And that FK was almost a copy of the Istanbul one, albeit a bit better.

Sadler saves that free kick by standing where the free kick went and just catching it

To be fair Sadler knows the fundamentals better than anyone he’d have known exactly where Ward Prowse was going to put it before he knew himself.

The mind boggles that people think he should have done better for the free kick. It was right in the corner. He did unbelievably to get that close to saving it. Most keepers wouldn’t have got a hand to it. It was basically a perfect free kick.

Criticism of De Gea for the second goal is absolute rubbish. Of course the highlights looked bad because he handled the ball behind the line. It was a perfect free kick and the only way he could get to it in the first place was because it had more time to travel behind first.

He is unfortunately a victim of his own success. As others have said, he should have simply watched it fly in and then stared at Fred in an indignant way but he did the harder thing. Tried to save it at the expense of looking stupid and injuring his knee horribly which may end up with him losing his starting position to Dean Henderson.

Was a lot more confident with Hendo in goal
The times I have seen Hendo play with this defense, there was this calmness on them that is hard to explain. The defense knows DDG weakness and go out of their way to help and this creates confusion in the backfield on set pieces. He may not be as good as DDG when it comes to reflex saves, the calmness should be considered.

The easier thing to do would have been to learn from the goal he conceded in mid-week.

Exposed today and could have cost us. Will he ever be stronger in his box? Teams are always putting players around him because they know he can be bullied.

Agreed. I thought those 2 early saves he made, although routine gave the defence confidence. Solid hands.

I hope he has a run of games now to show what he can offer. Calmness from the keeper is massive.

Criticsm for both goals are total bs and agenda driven.
Free kick was perfect and nothing to add to that.
Corner kick was on near post. Gk can't physically get that ball and no keeper in the world rush out on that balls. Because he can't reach it. That is why you have 3 or players there.
Later Hendo did exactly same thing and stayed in the middle of the goal. But defence cleared the ball.

Attacks on DDG lately are insane and without any logic. He is blamed for every goal which he concedes.

I've defended him loads in the past but he looked at fault for me on the corner, will have to watch it back. Felt at the time he could come out to collect it but was being bullied. He looked small around the Southampton players.

I don't really blame DDG for today's goals but would like to see Dean in goal. Give him a chance and of he fecks up then DDG can try win his place back.

No his positioning of the wall was wrong with the second goal. The first one is not his fault. His footwork was slow for the second one too.
Nothing he could do in the first one.

Only way how he could get that ball is with teleport device. It was whipped corner between 6 yard line and near post. How he can reach that ball?

I agree with you. What could De Gea have done with either goal? The first goal, someone gets free of Rashford and squeezes in behind Telles with a near post header at point blank range. The second goal, De Gea does well to get even close to saving a ball flying right within the post. Instead of praising his effort and desire to stop that immaculate freekick which resulted in an injury, I'm astonished that he's being slated.

I think Henderson did well when he came on, but he'd likely have conceded the same 2 goals that De Gea did. We forget that just not too long ago we were slating Henderson for conceding against Istanbul and saying De Gea would have saved it. I think it's too early to say Henderson is ahead of De Gea in the pecking order. Hope De Gea recovers soon but in the meantime, Henderson is a pretty good goalkeeper to have too

Was it?? He took several steps across.

It was literally inside the post. Most keepers would just watch that go in.

Spot on above with regards to the free kick. Dave not to blame whatsoever.

No keeper really has any right to save that, it's been bent over the wall an inch away from the far post and it's looping downwards.

what's the purpose putting your hand behind the goalpost to save?

See this is where you may not understand. You need to get the wall where the ball has to travel the most distance. By putting the wall where he put it, he gave the opportunity for the free kick to be hit into the near post. He was far to his left. One step to the right he would have been in a good position. And he didn't move his feet quickly enough. I have seen the goals in lots of angles and slow motion too.
He is not to blame for the first goal at all.

I invite you all too look closely how many times keepers catch ball from corner on near post. Only if it is inches away from that post they go on it. In other situations they stay on the line

You want him to stand on the right side and put the wall up to cover his left!?

Yeah, no top keeper sets his wall up like that.

Have zero goalkeeping experience but, I just don't see how he is at fault for either goal. No keeper gets to the ball past the near post through 6-7 players for the first. Bloody Ward-Prowse. He had same one in second half and Henderson doesn't come through everyone either.

For the FK, we should never be giving Ward Prowse a chance there. It's absolutely perfect spot for him to go either side. He gets it over the wall and any closer to the post, he hits it. Unless DDG cheats to the wall side from the off, not sure how he could do better. But, guess people are saying he should have cheated and if he got beat by ball the other side then would have been criticizing him for not letting his wall do the job and cover the side he should have been.
