I said from the beginning we should have concentrated on replacing him instead of spending all that time on Sancho. This was the key position in my eyes. In any case, we'll just have to figure it out until we can fix this.
What? I thought Matic had a good game.

Cavani doesn’t have to be strong or quick enough to shrug off defenders. His movement is so good that he has enough space inside the box.

And he keeps the game simple when he’s away from the goal to move the ball and the game forward. That’s experience and playing to your strength. Move up the field, get to the D, find space to receive the ball, and shoot.
Agreed. Has brought a level of composure to that front line we haven’t had since Ibra

I couldn’t watch, someone sum it up?

I’m sure the caf was sensible and waited til the end to pass judgment on the side.
Started fantastic, Greenwood misses an open goal, they hit us with a sucker punch. They took over, scored a great free kick. We bring Cavani on at half time he changes the game with an assist & 2 goals.

It's taken us about a decade to realise we can score from crosses, feel like most of our goals are coming from crosses at the moment.

Started the 1st half well, Southampton could barely get into the game. Greenwood missed a good opportunity. They then scored from a corner, was very good delivery but pretty poor defending by Rashford who lost his man. We then had another top opportunity but Greenwood hit it at the keeper and Brunos rebound shot was saved close. Southampton then scored again this time due to a bad error by Fred giving a free kick away right on the edge of the box. Beautiful free kick though, De Gea smacked his knee into the post trying to save it. We then struggled after that panicked a bit before finally grabbing control of the game in the final few minutes of the 1st half.

The Caf imploded at this point as you can imagine. But we were the better team imo and it was frustrating that we threw away 2 goals like that after having such a good start.

Cavani came on for Greenwood and Henderson on for De Gea at half time. The rest of the 2nd half was about United slowly building momentum and pressure. We had lots of the ball, looked fitter and sharper across the pitch and we were able to get Cavani into the game around 55minutes in. Once Cavani was getting the ball Southampton bricked it. Cavani got the ball on the right and crossed it into the middle of the box where Bruno slapped it in. At this point it looked inevitable to me that we'd get a 2nd, the real question is whether we could get the winner. The rest of the match we kept building pressure and Southampton was going deeper and deeper. We had lots of chances and Cavani was the one with the composure to knock them in. Very good game by us, think we got it tactically right from the start we just made dumb individual errors and got punished at set pieces.

Very good performance by us and another game when we didn't really look that tired. Open play we looked far more inventive and were getting decent chances. Very promising.
Excellent summary. Spot on.

Hope so, Liverpool showed how ruthlessly effective crossing can be at breaking down teams, helps that we've now got some players eager to get on the end of them.

That is about as good as it gets sometimes, 2-0 down away against a good side who are very much in form and we produce an excellent performance and turn it round to win and in truth we could have scored 5 or 6.

It took character, skill, bravery and some good management and coaching aswell.

Credit where credits due that was excellent all round. Small negative was ddg at fault for both goals? Maybe, but I think it may be nit picking to look to much into it.

If another one of our attackers hit form along with Bruno and Cavani we are going to have a very good season. A challenge even. Who is it going to be? Rashford and Martial looking way off it so far. Greenwood could catch fire any game now. Fred Bruno and now Cavani are our form players.

Cavani takes all the plaudits and rightfully so.

But, let us not overlook an INCREDIBLE performance from Fred today. He was everywhere with the press, and made key link passes in the transition. He was wrestling with Adamns and that thug Romeu half the match. He's growing splendidly.

What? I thought Matic had a good game.
My comment was more focused on an overall picture. He was fine today, but we need more consistency in that key position. Think it would be great if we had a younger version...

Great win, like old times. I stay off the forum during matches as the comments raise my blood pressure so I'll have to imagine what it was like at half time. I appreciate jeffthered having a different view but I would disagree with the idea that we did not play well. Watching it as objectively as possible (not easy as a fan) I felt that for most of the first half we were playing decently. Our passing was quick and more accurate than usual, we maneuvered ourselves out of crowded awkward positions well, and I thought we should have had at least one goal. Had we drawn, I still think I would have been satisfied with the performance.

The TV crew here at half-time seemed to be watching a different match, but they would likely agree with jeffthrered's post. United were apparently poor and Soton were all over us. Hum...that really was not what I saw. I felt they got lucky with their goals. The first was annoyingly predictable...in fact, so was the second. Maguire was livid and rightly so with the weak jumps of those at front. We all knew it was going to happen but it was not until the second half that we managed to deal with this type of corner. Commentators saying poor de Gea was boxed in but what difference would it have made if he was not - he never comes out for crosses anyway. The free-kick, he might also have done better, I feel. Great shot stopper usually but a bit weak under pressure from opponents.

I agree with whoever said W-P should have been off for the persistent fouling but generally, I did not feel Soton were as threatening or overwhelming as they can be and as I expected to see them do today - we seemed all over them instead. So we concede predictable set piece goals but otherwise seemed to have a grip on the game. And Cavani...well, it's all been said. Class is forever and he has it. Don't think he can start every game but that's ok, he brings such movement when he's there I hope the others can learn from him. Today, I think Ole can be satisfied, and we should be too.

Ok I got you now.
I suppose he was more talking about their attitude and mentality when we were behind? I think it goes without saying the lads know how big a disappointment it would be for everyone if they lost.
Yeah, like old times times! Of course managers are put on the spot after a match and sometimes their words come out not quite as they intended. I know he wan't saying he didn't care - quite the opposite.

Think we're on the same page. Obviously delighted for him.

Of course it was.

This forum is something else at times. A sense of intertia amongst some... I would far prefer someone respond with issues relating to the qulaity of the game and the comments made.

Just saying ' worst post....' etc is sloppy, lazy and doesn't really offer the wider forum anything at all. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
We bosses most of the game, SHOULD have buried any number of chances before we did actually score.

Ran the show second half.

Perfect subs from Ole.

Great double and assist for Cavani

That includes an injury time winner which is always a fan favourite.

Saints were pushing for 3rd place, absolutely no pushovers this season. You’ve just been completely negative, which sums up this forum a lot of the time and a lot of posters are sick of it.

It’s not knee jerk, everybody is just happy with the win

New club record of consecutive away wins.

A) the Diamond 4-4-2 is useless with this squad, but Ole used it once again with abysmal results in the first half.

B) Cavani is a proper n9; balls,pride, experience-instinct and hunger. Play him in a 4-2-3-1. Dman it.

C) Can't see us winning anything this season other than perhaps the FA.

Ahh I’m disappointed that I couldn’t watch this. It would have been worth it just for that second Cavani goal.

Love him but it's great to see a future beyond Pogba.
Same, he’s been my favorite United player for the past few years, but it is refreshing to see that we can exist without our entire performance as a team being dependent on how good of a match he has.

Thoroughly deserved the 3 pts today I couldn't believe we were 2 down at half time.
I always felt if we could grab one we could go on and win always sweeter when it's a last minute winner.

Nice to have a proper no 9 cavani was outstanding

Cavani first goal is just pure class. I don't think any of our strikers would have score that. Lightning quick reaction to anticipate Bruno deflected shot. Martial, Greenwood or Rashford would be too late to do anything
No question. I used to think we didn't need a pure no.9 and what we needed was more hunger for goals from Rashford and Martial but I think its obvious they dont have it in them to play as a proper no.9.

I enjoy winners by Cavani and Fernandes more than from the other players. I don't really know why.

Too true.

First half was very unlucky overall.
Exactly. We should have scored two as well. First goal was against the run of play and after that we lost our footing but I thought last 5 minutes of the first half were great too. They had only 15 minutes spell in the whole game. I would like to know the shot count and also chances created because I thought we dominated them heavily

Should have scored ourselves in the first half and then found ourselves two down. Don't give silly freekicks away in JWP range. DDG went off injured at half time and Ole brought on Deano and Cavani. We bossed the second half. Goals from Bruno and then two from Cavani. Exciting stuff. Was the caf sensible. Don't be silly, our course we weren't.
Ha thanks

Southampton kicked the shit out of United while not doing anything except that. United should have gotten at least one goal but were not clinical at all. Southampton scored from a corner and free kick because James Ward-Prowse has the best set piece in the league and is in good form. DDG got injured after his knee hit the post diving trying to save the JWP free kick goal.

Henderson and Cavani on, DDG and Greenwood off at the break. United kept playing pretty well while Southampton didn't counter nor close down as much because they weren't tired, they just didn't do it well because United played well. Couldn't touch United in the second half. Cavani crossed from the right for Bruno. Bruno's ball from outside the box is deflected and headed into goal by Cavani. Southampton were out played throughout much of the match and finally, Marcus had his best moment of the match with an early cross into the box with Cavani making a near post run and a near post headed goal.
Sounds painful for De Gea, thanks!

Why does Rashy always need a rest?

I remember saying the same thing most of last season, maybe even the one before.

He should be one of the fittest players out there but seemingly always needs a rest because he's not 100%.
Did you see the way he reacted to missing his man for the first goal. That says it all. The lad loves united to bits. We are fortunate to have him
