But even towards non-black people? Are there no other friendly Spanish words to use on non-black friends?

Just curious.
Yeah there are plenty of words
What is the difference between negrito and negro in Uraquay’s version of Spanish?
Negrito is being said in an amicable way only. Negro can be interpreted in both ways depending on the context. Another example would be with Fat (gordo) and )fatty (gordito); if you call your girl gordita it would be in a lovely way but if you call her gorda, you would be sleeping on the couch. This is really common in Latin America.

Yeah every Asian knows this is bullshit, 9/10 it is meant/said in a derogatory manner.
I have several uncle's/ elders called this. It's never had a racial undercurrent. It's just a nickname. If other people use it to be derogatory in a different context, then that really isn't the same.

Im just confused that it was concluded that when Suarez used the word he intended malicious hurt, yet now we are told that the word itself in Spanish can never ever have such associations.
to me that feels like it’s wrong if a Liverpool players but OK for a Manchester player.

FYI: IMO cavani was ignorant in this instance and didnt intend any malice, but that’s not an acceptable excuse.
oh come on...
if I am saying "you are English", I am not being xenophobic, am I?
If I am saying "I kick you because you are English" then yes... is there anything bad with the word "English" then?

We have racism in Uruguay, we are not saints or perfect, but we are ok with saying "negro" or "negrito" among us, because, as it might surprise some people here, we don't think it is an insult as we don't think there is anything wrong with having dark skin.

 Takes me back to some of the ridiculous mistakes and misunderstandings in my first few weeks in Colombia. I do love learning languages and it really opens your eyes to other cultures but it can get very stressful.
One for you with a Colombia-Brazil link. I was having a drinks and supper gathering at my flat in Arpoador (Rio) with 4-5 local couples. Had also invited a Colombian chap who had arrived a few weeks ago so he could get to meet people. Brazilians are pretty lax with punctuality but this guy was seriously late, about an hour and a half, and people were getting hungry. Then he arrives all sweaty, flustered, hair all over the shop, his shirt a bit loose on the side, the collar lopped to one side... "Really really sorry to keep you waiting but I got stuck in a very hot cnut"

Brazilian buceta = cnut
Colombian buseta = public transport

Any word that derives from the word negro should not be allowed in U.K. I’m very happy with that opinion.

if you find being an anti racist dull, again that is reflective of you and not me.
Do we need to ban Pata Negra?

Does anybody here actually believe that policing foreign languages helps fight racism in any way? Serious question.
It only bolsters the bigots to decry anti-racism as being a small problem blown out of proportion.
Stuff like this works against anti racism efforts.

What about the word blank? Which derives from blanco, meaning white, from which we get blanqiuto, meaning whitey/little white boy?

As I understand it, 'negro' is a word with a succinct definition, "black". It can be used literally, to describe the colour of your shirt, perhaps, or figuratively in a negative sense, like Suarez used it towards Evra.

'Negrito' is an idiom with multiple meanings including "sweetheart", "my little dark friend" ,etc and is almost never used in a negative context but in one of genuine caring and endearment. I'm sure there are situations where we might raise an eyebrow but as an idiom it's difficult to land on a succinct definition as the usage demonstrates.

Searching for life's white text in London
No i get that, i was purely addressing the fact that the post said Cavani was addressing the person by his skin colour, which he wasn't because the person he was responding to was white
I see, it's just when I googled the term it came up as 'little black person' so I may have initially assumed the recipient. Even after learning that he was white and having appreciated that you can't always accurately translate a turn of phrase, it still is a quite loaded word at least in this and many other societies.

El Gato Negro is one of my favourite restaurants, I can’t believe all this time it’s been racist.

I wonder how many people on here have called their friends or members of their family names as a term of affection or endearment, I know I have and do.

I wouldn't like it if someone who doesn't speak English come and tell me I can't say certain things that are part of my culture or what I've grown up with.

Its quite clear that context matters with what he posted and it's nothing like the Suarez/Evra situation.

I wish people would have the same energy to question things like child poverty and hunger in 2020. Yknow, things that matter more.

We need to outlaw the Spanish language in the UK!!!
Let’s just get rid of anything beginning with N?

@sammsky1 context matters buddy, you can’t ban any word, that’s ridiculous.

Reminds me of the Frankie Boyle joke where he used the N word, and a member of the audience came up to him afterwards and said “I don’t think (n word) can be used in any context”, to which Frankie replied “well you just said it!”.

Fully agree. And it just gives the actual racists more weapons to use againts the PC colture. If you care about racism, fight racism. Not foreign languages that has no context to yours.

How can it be a loaded word in English if it doesn't exist in English? We are applying a different definition to it because it looks like another word we consider offensive. That's a slippery slope.

How is political correctness killing society?
By being its own worst enemy.

I think political correctness is misapplied if it reduces the political discourse and unneccessarily alienates people with strong beliefs. Political correctness ought to allow for discourse which increases mutual understanding while holding people accountable for offensive actions (verbal abuse and threats are also actions).

In my opinion, going after Cavani in this case is an example of misapplied political correctness. There seems to have been no racist intent, cultural/linguistic context totally explains and to some extent absolves Cavani, and his apology is out there. Should have been case closed at that point.

In my experience, people who hold slightly xenophobic, anti-PC sentiments are only strengthened in their beliefs by this kind of hyper-sensitivity.

I’m allowed to hold my opinion.

BYW why has cavani now taken down the post and unreservedly apologised?
he should have taken the stance offered by his fellow language speakers in this thread insisting it’s impossible for him to offend using this language so why should he apologise??

Its about time football educated foreign players coming into the UK about the subtles of British culture. What might be acceptable in their culture might not be here. Probably an innocent comment blown way out of propotion.

Warning is all that is required unless it happens again.

Non-spanish speakers defining how Latin American people should talk is always equally ridiculous. Literal cultural imperialism. Subtle racism exists in Spanish language too, but this ain’t it.

I think he will get a two-match ban. One more than Bernardo Silva got, because of the different political circumstances of making such comment in 2020 as opposed to 2019. Shouldn’t get anything, but won’t get away with it surely.
