Its about time football educated foreign players coming into the UK about the subtles of British culture. What might be acceptable in their culture might not be here. Probably an innocent comment blown way out of propotion.

Warning is all that is required unless it happens again.
Again are we saying that all words in Spanish containing 'negro' are now not to be used in the UK?

Just a caution... there's a lot!

Can't believe intelligent people are comparing this incident to Suarez-Evra fiasco!!! even if you don't support Manchester United there is not even one similarity in both incident. If he gets a ban for this foreign PL players should start taking lessons on how to act and speak while they play in England or the UK.

Any word that derives from the word negro should not be allowed in U.K. I’m very happy with that opinion. Cavani agrees too.

if you find being an anti racist dull, again that is reflective of you and not me. Seems like you have to find new language I’m afraid
Bolded.. Certainly. England knows best.

so in your uk with this word banned, what would you suggest is the suitable punishment if two Spanish dudes get caught in conversation and one of them is over heard saying this? Prison time? Just a fine?

discovered a new word yesterday, no idea what it means but now wants to change other languages to avoid it. Love it. Rule Britannia

I’m allowed to hold my opinion.

BYW why has cavani now taken down the post and unreservedly apologised?
he should have taken the stance offered by his fellow language speakers in this thread insisting it’s impossible for him to offend using this language so why should he apologise??
 You genuinely think it’s helpful to ban words? Like some kind of word facist?

He’s obviously apologised because he was told to?

In Brazil, pale white people were sometimes (not so much anymore) called russo, which stands for Russian. Go figure these things...
During the World Cup in 2014 I somehow ended up playing a match in the 'favela'. Not a single one on my team could speak English so they kept referring me as 'gringo' as a way to communicate with me on the field. Thinking back now I should probably have stormed off in protest to teach them a lesson, but they would have probably ended up thinking 'wtf is wrong with the gringo crybaby' as I wouldn't have been able to tell them the reason for such reaction. I'm extremely offended in hindsight, though.

People say this but the theoretical problem is actually reversed. You'd have to understand all of the other cultures in the world to then figure out what is common in other cultures that might be offensive in the UK. It's not a feasible task, these incidents will still happen.

The other element of this that is unpoliceable is when you think that this is only happening because Spanish and other Latin languages share the same alphabet as English. If something similar were to be writing on IG by a player with a language that bears no commonality with English I doubt anyone would even notice.

As I understand it, 'negro' is a word with a succinct definition, "black". It can be used literally, to describe the colour of your shirt, perhaps, or figuratively in a negative sense, like Suarez used it towards Evra.

'Negrito' is an idiom with multiple meanings including "sweetheart", "my little dark friend" ,etc and is almost never used in a negative context but in one of genuine caring and endearment. I'm sure there are situations where we might raise an eyebrow but as an idiom it's difficult to land on a succinct definition as the usage demonstrates.
Thanks for the explanation and as I’ve already said, I’m 100% convinced that is also Cavani’s context.
However he is also living in In the context of U.K. 2020, where it is problematic, which he admits given his apology and withdrawal.

Non-spanish speakers defining how Latin American people should talk is always equally ridiculous. Literal cultural imperialism. Subtle racism exists in Spanish language too, but this ain’t it.

I think he will get a two-match ban. One more than Bernardo Silva got, because of the different political circumstances of making such comment in 2020 as opposed to 2019. Shouldn’t get anything, but won’t get away with it surely.
So, a three match ban next season then?

It's only problematic because of ignorance and "cultural imperialism" as one other poster put it.

We are literally saying this word resembles an offensive word in English therefore it must be offensive.

This is why punishing Cavani is so dangerous... even having him apologise is a joke. But again, can see why the club have had him do it.

Perhaps then, we should get rid of calling /classifying peope white, black, yellow, brown etc. Besides, I live in England and I've never seen a white person, a black person or any other colour classification of any kind of person. Utterly ridiculous this is still happening today.

What is the difference between negrito and negro in Uraquay’s version of Spanish?
It's been explained many times. The former is the diminutive form of the latter. Precisely how diminutives work depends on context.

Both "negro/negra" and "negrito/negrita" are used non-offensively (as a term of affection, to the extent that parents use it to refer to their children) by Spanish speakers (all over the world). That is beyond question. The phrase "gracias, negrito" in isolation can simply mean "thanks, mate" or "thanks, love" or "thanks, baby".

The problematic aspect of the term has to do with its origin. It does refer to colour (whether skin colour or even just eye or hair colour) even in its modern use, and some would argue that its modern/current use (which is clearly not racist) has evolved (like many things) from a past that is anything but unproblematic.

Google it...it's a complex question.

Start with "Jennifer Lopez + negrita".

The obvious solution is for players to stop using social media and just text/call each other
The obvious solution is for all people to stop using social media. No good comes out of it. Just raises one sh*t storm after the other.

got a friend suggesting he should be banned for 8 games as Suarez was banned for 8 games for saying the same thing. When I pointed out the article, and the admission, he said it was the same thing.

To be clear.. He's apologised on behalf of idiots who can't educate themselves that other languages contain words which may sound similar to offensive english words, but in actual fact, aren't offensive at all.

Banning all words which may be perceived as offensive is fecking stupid.

@sammsky1 If I ordered a faggot with onion gravy when we eventually go out to dinner, would you be fuming with me for using that word?

One for you with a Colombia-Brazil link. I was having a drinks and supper gathering at my flat in Arpoador (Rio) with 4-5 local couples. Had also invited a Colombian chap who had arrived a few weeks ago so he could get to meet people. Brazilians are pretty lax with punctuality but this guy was seriously late, about an hour and a half, and people were getting hungry. Then he arrives all sweaty, flustered, hair all over the shop, his shirt a bit loose on the side, the collar lopped to one side... "Really really sorry to keep you waiting but I got stuck in a very hot cnut"

Brazilian buceta = cnut
Colombian buseta = public transport
I remember some of my mischievous Brazilian students tricking a poor Colombian student into saying that. Isn't there also a problem with saying the word 'run' in Portuguese (correr I believe,) as it sounds like 'feck' in Spanish?

If he gets a ban for this, Foreign players should stop coming to play football here.

Banning him for using his own language... is racist.

Why are people struggling with this?

This. I don't know why absolutely every single interaction needs to be done via public social media these days.

At the end of the day, he used a word that isn't offensive in his culture. South American names tend to be descriptive (fatty, skinny etc) but it could be construed as offensive in the country he currently lives in and the current political/cultural climate.

If he gets a ban it will be deserved and hopefully, he'll learn something in the process. If he doesn't get banned then great news for us, but again, I hope he learns something from the process.

I'm confused here do the FA honestly and truly believe he was saying thank you for the assist on his second goal? Of course he was referring to the kit.

Why was he told to?
Because it's easier to apologise for how other people may have taken the post rather than trying to educate people why it isn't offensive when they've already made their mind up that it is.

I wonder if Mick and Keef will feel the need to apologize for a certain track off Black and Blue (first track on Side B, if I'm not mistaken.)

I believe it is slang for cumming in Spanish. (I'm hoping that the education that actually comes out of this is people becoming more aware of the beautiful slang in Spanish and Portuguese).

So the ridiculous FA doesnt ban him for using a word in his native language that isn't even offensive, and has been taken wildly out of context.

Context matters, see my dinner invitation for an example.
