Chelsea spending? That's a different discussion. We're talking about Frank compared to Ole Spending.
Splitting hairs a bit though isn't it. You could argue Lampard might not of wanted Kovacic and Pulisic but knowing how things are run at Man Utd you can't say with any certainty that Ole wanted VDB and Cavani

It’s really not - it’s about going as far as you can for the financial benefits.

All coaches would rather easier draws and avoiding the best teams. That goes for every team, not just United & Chelsea.
That’s for Ed & glazer not for football reasoning.

But Ole was manager when you signed VDB and Cavani.

Frank was Derby manager when Chelsea signed Kova and Puli. He might not have wanted either in the same way he didn't want Batshuayi eg they were already Chelsea players.

And Oles better defensive record last season?
What about it?

I was one of Lampard’s most vocal critics on here when it come to the defensive record but you can’t dispute that he looks to have fixed it.

What’s the point in us celebrating being defensively solid last season when it’s completely gone to pot this campaign?

All this suggests is that Chelsea are improving and we would appear to be going backwards.

Fair enough, just seems Chelsea fans conveniently like to ignore the near 100m spent on those two players when talking about Lampard and the transfer ban

Kovacic fair enough, Pulisic on the other hand was signed six months before hand so claiming he was signed under Lampard would be like saying Fred was signed under Ole.

Was he a Sarri signing then?

They should be ignored when talking about Lampard's spending, just like Fred & Dalot should be ignored when talking about Ole's spending.

At the point of his signing we as a club we're all in on Sarri (not even the fans had turned at that point) so yes (someone will no doubt point out to Sarri saying he didn't know he was signing but he meant timing wise, not that he didn't know he was coming full stop).

Why Kovacic fair enough? He was offically signed when Lampard was Derby manager.
Because it was his decision to make him permanent.

Our clueless manager is under criticism and under pressure because united is a giant club. It is says it all about the size of Chelsea as a club when their manager is doing the same as our manager yet everybody is happy there and he is under no pressure to lose his job. I still rate both Lampard and and Ole as the worse managers in the league. Both should be sacked. But Lampard plays a bit better football, that's why he is a small step a head of our manager.

He was under pressure early in the season when the results were erratic and will be again if results erratic.

You are right that he was given leeway last season, just like Ole was before he got a full transfer window.

All this suggests is that Chelsea are improving and we would appear to be going backwards.
Or it suggests quality of the opponents both teams have faced. Chelsea haven't beaten a single team currently in the top half. Their next six are Wolves, West Ham, Arsenal, Villa, City, Leicester. All banana skins judging by how they've performed in similar games so far.

At least we're coming out on top against the likes of WH, Soton, Everton. And we're yet to play 3 of the 4 bottom teams.

If Frank was given the option of Athletico or Lazio, you'd be naive to think he would want the former. Coaches want to win trophies.
So my point still stands and not being countered then "Going through group stage isn’t really the purpose if you can’t even winning it''.

Fair point.

It will certainly be interesting to see how things shape up after the next six.

We urgently need to have cut the gap as our games, on paper, are winnable.

How have you possibly got that from what I have said? The entire point is to go through and keep going through as far as possible BECAUSE of the financial benefits & potential trophy.

You just said it coaches want to win trophy. Going through group stage is not a trophy. That's why point still stands and not being countered, It will only matter if they win it.

And again, financial benefit is not for football reason. Fans support the club for football reason not for commercial or financial reason. The football reason to be in CL is to compete with the best, the top tier teams.

Not much in it between him, Ole and Arteta. Has the best squad out of these three at hands.
Plenty between Ole/Frank and Arteta to be fair. Arteta is terrible. At least the first two produce some good performances now and then. Arteta it's a painful grind 10/10 times.

OGS hit the jackpot with one player. You know who that is. Said player has kept him in the job. Let's not use terms like "spent his money better". Having said that, there are managers out there who would tear the league with a front four of Werner, Ziyech, Havertz and Pulisic.
Obviously has if its kept him above Lampard, has it not?

He was backed more in that window, sure. Over their whole time as managers? Ole has been backed more.
Id aguee against that. We have given contracts to players he wants to sell, buy players that are reportedly not his choice and feck about with his actual choices that we don't sign.

Surely you have to base the success level of your signings on whether they're good enough or potentially good enough to play in title winning teams as opposed to doing enough to finish above a team with a transfer embargo on goal difference. I'm assuming that's your ultimate aim.

Bruno and VDB defiently can, Maguire possibly depending on the system and his teammates but the rest don't strike me as players that could play in title winning sides.

Ole called VdB and convinced him to join. Personally I think this forum reads into transfers way to much - lots of people scream we need a DoF but ignore the fact that by not having one our manager has more control of transfers. Woodwood gets a lot of flak rightly on here but there is zero evidence of him being involved in personally choosing transfer targets, it's just fantasy from fans.

What you can sensibly presume is Woodward has not been able to attract some manager's top targets but, then again, that is the case everywhere. Pep wanted Koulibally this summer but Napoli wouldn't budge on asking price. Ole wanted every player he has signed, as did Jose and LVG. They might not have been their top choices and they might have been rushed/unplanned like LVG's (he even confirmed the manager has the main say because he was shocked that he had to provide his own ideas and that resulted in signings like Rojo who he'd seen in the WC) but our signings are on each manager.

I do, we are just fractionally better at this moment than Chelseas!
Plus this summer told me we are aiming for top 4 with that cluster feck of a window. If we do challenge for the title its ironically down to Ole.

Ole, Frank and Arteta all are lucky that Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal are managed by average managers. People can cherry pick, ohh He is better than other. But as a United fan I will be happy if Lampard remains Chelsea manager forever rather than them hiring allegri or some other decent coach. Same a Chelsea fan would wish the same for Ole and United and we both wish the same for Arteta and Arsenal.

There's not many Chelsea fans who want Lampard sacked though. There's a ton of Man United fans who want Ole out.

Just on this site, more than 40% of fans want him gone...

I've seen enough encouragement there's a potential top coach there even if he has to do a bit of fine tuning. But either way it's win win for us, even if it turns out he can't take us to the next level tactically, his fantastic squad building will leave an excellent squad for someone that can.

Yes but that was not the point I made. I said as a United fan I would like Lampard remaining your manager for a long time as that would mean you not having a allegri or some other decent manager. Similarly as a chelsea fan you would prefer Ole to be here for ever than us getting Poch or someone else.

Correct, lots of Man United fans think Lampard is shit and lots of Chelsea fans think Ole is shit.

I'm saying that lots of Man United fans also think Ole is shit.

They've been in great form since late October, beat Sevilla 4-0 away to win their UCL group and look set for a title challenge. Why is this thread being bumped because they lost away to Everton

This place is very much opinion shaped on last result based, look at the Nagelsmann thread after United/Leipzig at Old Trafford....

Does your dof not do your spending?

Your club is run slightly different. How much of say do sarri and Lampard have in signings?

Point im making is, we have ole Jose lvg signings, whereas you have Chelsea signings that would happen regardless of the manager, no?

No. Jorginho was obviously a Sarri signing. Chilwell was obviously a Lampard signing for example.

Was Van Der Beek an Ole signing? Certainly does not look like it given he never picks him.

The board and managers have their say at both clubs to varying degrees. It's not black and white.

The signings of 17/18 were largely Conte. The fact we were going after Serie A players and targetmen was enough proof of that.

Jorginho (goes without saying) and Kepa (widely reported Sarri identified him for his football) were Sarri signings, Kova I'm not sure about and Pulisic I imagine was a mutual one neither had any objections too.

With Lampard signings. Chilwell was clearly his push, likewise Ziyech and Werner, Havertz I think was regarded as too big an opportunity to miss on both sides, Silva it was widely reported Lampard said yes without a second thought when the opportunity came about and with Mendy he happily delegated to Cech and Christophe.

We didn't play badly yesterday. We lacked creativity, but we conceded a penalty and hit the post a couple of times. I'd consider a game like that a tight game that didnt quite bounce in our direction. Everton away has generally been a tough ground for us. We've won there once and lost 5 times in the last 6 years .
