I'm thinking Ghost may be the safest bet to get me through the holidays. FF, I've never really gotten into the series except X which I liked. But this one looks great. TLOU could actually be a bit short I'm thinking. But I do really want to play it.

TLOU is a nice condense story without taking so much time to complete. FF and ghost will definitely take more time to complete if thats what's your looking for. Though for me, I'd pick FF instead of ghost. First time playing FF too, and I loved it so much.

TLOU2 is like 30 hours long, only slightly shorter than FF7 remake.

Either of those would be good, Ghost is average as feck.

How would you rate the following out of 10 caftards?

Sekiro 6
Ghost of Tsushima 3
Last of us 2 2
Outer worlds 1
Control 6
Metro Exodus 2
FF 7 Remake 2

Or just pick one. Wondering what to pick up for the winter break.

Sekiro is very good, but it depends on whether you're a souls fan. 8
I've not played GoT.
I don't like naughty dog third person action games, so I'm recusing myself here again.
Outer worlds is pretty damn good, some real fallout new vegas vibes but pretty short. Can be had cheapish now too. 7.5.
Not played control.
Metro Exodus - a solid shooter but you might not get a huge amount of value out of it - 7.5.
FF7 remake - not played the remake, but bear in mind its only 30% of the original game. Might be worth waiting until they've released all of it?

Are you just narrowing it down to these list of games? You considered other games like Yakuza: Like a dragon (or Yakuza 0 which is also amazing), Persona 5 (100 hours of content)?

Sekiro - 8.5
Ghost of Tsushima - 8.5 (9 is you like open world games, 8 if you'd prefer rails)
Last of us 2 - 6.5 (a 7 if you can tolerate Walking Dead level writing)
Outer worlds - 7.5
Control - 7
Metro Exodus - 7
FF 7 Remake - 8 (this changes daily, sometimes it feels like a 6 sometimes a 9.5)

Love Yakuza 0. Kiwami was okay. I'll take a break before I dive into Yakuza again. I've played Persona 5.

These seem to be the very highly regarded PS4 games I've still to play.

Outer Wilds > Outer Worlds
Outer Wilds is one of the games of the generation for me. Absolutely incredible and an experience I hold hear. The music itself makes me happy.

I like open world games. But I don't like open world bloat. For example I really dislike Assassin's Creed and the mindless and shallow open world it represents, whereas Witcher 3 is among the two greatest games of all time Imo.

It's down the bolded three. But I'm wary that not being final fantasy nerd, my nostalgic juices won't be flowing like it would be for many. And Sekiro I know I will love, but don't feel like facing the stress.

GoT is one of the most bloaty open world games ever. It's an interactive checklist of meaningless stuff.

It looks pretty and the combat is cool though.

Hades and Outer Wilds were the best things I played this year. Indies for the win.

From what I read the bloaty stuff is optional. As per the reviewers I like at least.

Ah yes, it is, the story and setting is very cool, so if you don't have the compulsive need to do all the optional stuff, you should get it.

So I finally went for this and my early observations are
  • Combat is really good. Thoroughly enjoying it so far. The weightiness of it is on a different level to the likes of AC and co.
  • Story seems engaging enough but writing and dialogue is a little basic. I really dislike how it pans out when you're speaking to someone though. Who the feck thought this was a good idea? Makes the interaction lack any personal feeling.
  • World looks both stunning and a little bland given the hype that was surrounding it. I've taken a feck load of images so far and it's hard to believe this is running well on the base PS4. However thus far it doesn't look very lived in and real. But can't complain too much given I've not played that much
  • I actually wish the lips were synced to the Japanese audio as I prefer that authenticity but given this, I've opted for English audio.
But all in all, a good start to this experience.

So I'm done with Ghost of Tsushima, which was a nice fun experience. I wouldn't say it's among the very best of this generation or anything like that, but definitely enjoyable due to the world and combat both of which hit the mark or thereabouts. The writing could have been better, many of the tales which I got hooked to, initially, ended tamely. Same goes for the main story too.

Now, I've got 4 holidays coming up and am contemplating either
1. The last of us 2 (story based game will be a good change from the open world)
Or
2. Metro exodus (unsure about its quality although slow paced games suit me) + either The Forest or Doom 2016, as all of these are on a good discount

Counter Strike: Condition Zero.

A classic old game with short rounds. It's hard to get bored. Lots of maps and lots of variation.

#2 with The Forest if you haven’t done Subnautica yet.

Metro Exodus is really good. I wouldn't call it slow paced, maybe moreso a little slow to actually get going initially, but I loved the semi-open world aspect of it and how there were multiple ways to approach missions. Dialogue was a little silly and cheesy but the world was cool and the story is interesting (I hadn't played the previous two but it was still easy enough to follow)

Doom 2016 is a total blast and well worth playing.

TLOU2 - for me not as good as the original and the gameplay feels a little dated in 2021 but still a great game, if a bit too long.

Thing is, repetitive games and monotonous "grind" tends to annoy me. So a little wary of Doom and buying two FPS' on that account. Although I did enjoy Tsushima due to its combat and exploration, even if it too got a bit samey in the final act, and you absolutely hated that one.

TLOU's gameplay was average even in 2013. Same problem that persists in rockstar games for me.

To be fair I've actually playing Tsushima a fair but recently on the ps5 and enjoying it a lot more since I started ignoring the foxes and birds. There's a good game in there still.

I wouldn't say that's anything repetitive or grindy about Exodus so maybe go with that.

I gave Metro Exodus a shot a couple of months ago and dropped it after a few hours. Didnt like the dialogue at all. But also found the actual gameplay to be really poor

Yeah, the good thing is the birds, foxes and camps are completely optional. I mean, I've never platinumed any game ever, and I've finished the Witcher 3 thrice! So I definitely wasn't going to go around freeing the whole of Tsushima.
