Actually Gary isn't biased against United. You want him to be biased in favour of United when it's his actual job to not be so. He said that despite being 2nd it doesn't feel like we're a team that's ready challenge which is something everyone thinks other than very optimistic United fans. To the rest of the watching world, we're somehow close to the top right now but not really a great team yet and still have problems. There have been calls to sack our manager FFS. Usually doesn't happen if you're doing brilliantly.

What I think he is terrible with is his stance of managers (cannot sack ) and certain players.

I remember liverpool being battered 7-2 not so long ago but how quickly thats forgotten. Truth is we are showing improvement in the league and we are in great form, when will it not be bizarre? What do we have to do? Its not that weird. Bizarre is hysterical.
Just ignore him. Our form will keep pushing us and if we win all our games in Dec/Jan, then they will be forced to take a look at the table and wonder what's going on. At that point, bizarre won't be enough to describe what they will be feeling mate.

Sometimes when we're in deep shit he tries his best not to be negative and when we're flying he tries his best not to be positive. I don't know what he's on about anymore. It's like a strategy to keep his punditry interesting than his honest opinion. I like to listen to Roy Keane more.

He is more concerned with his business losing money than people dying or suffering from Covid.
Not heard what he’s said about COVID. But why does everything have to be either one of the two extremes? It’s possible to acknowledge that the virus is deadly while pointing out that for the vast majority of the population it has little to no effect and wanting our government to try and figure out a more sustainable and long term solution until the vaccines hopefully bring infections down.

This continued locking down and opening up of society is causing damage itself. It’s causing mental health issues, it’s increasing existing physical conditions in people, i know plenty of elderly people who are stuck alone and get scared shitless with every headline whether it be “4000 daily deaths by December” or “ New mutant strain spreads 70% faster” but they fear and hate the isolation more.

I know people with families to support who invested everything in their business...loans don’t make up for the £100000k savings they lost.

Again not saying run riot and act like the virus doesn’t exist. But I completely get people who want a more pragmatic approach.

I can't say I disagree much with what he said this time

but if I did, it wouldn't impact my opinion of him

why would it? it's just an opinion on football, which he's paid to do

he's always been like this

As a die hard United fan, I obviously have loads of time for ex players but I have run out of patience with Gary Neville. When he first burst onto the punditry scene he tried too hard with his impartiality and quickly just turned into someone who constantly stuck the knife into us at every given opportunity. I used to think "calm down Gary, we get it you can't be biased" but the thing is, it seems to be getting worse as time goes on. Everything that seems to come from the guy regarding our club is negative, always wanting to level us when things seem to be going alright. His latest article on sky sports news about it being "bizarre" that we are third is just the straw that's broken the camels back for me. Why is it bizzare? One minute the table doesn't lie, next minute he's perplexed as to how we are third. Its the results Gary, the points tally. He always seems to want to knock us down a peg. Am I barking up the wrong tree here or what? Can't remember the last time he said something that showed his love for the club. Perhaps he's bitter because the super sub is doing a decent job at a big club whilst he nearly sent Valencia down.

Maybe I am overthinking it, but its one thing after the next with him. It hurts.
He's right though. It's a miracle that we're third

I am not a big fan of Gary myself but he's red through and through. He even put his own money in it as well.

Who else deserves to be 3rd / 2nd if we win game in hand?

I'm behind Ole, and even I'm surprised how close United is to the top. Not the most insulting/hurtful comments from him.

I read the headline and I had no idea what he meant. Is it bizarre that United are third as in he expected them to be higher or lower?

Leicester are 2nd.

The only reason it seems bizarre is the ridiculous doom and gloom around the club where the media paint every slip up as a disaster and almost ignore the fact that the club are going through their best run of away form in the league ever.

Over the last 12 months United have easily been in the top 3 in the league on form. It would be bizarre if they weren't in the top 3.

The real outlier is the start of the season and the disadvantage United and City have had against everyone else in the league. If anything that puts United (and City) in an artificially low position.

I think alot of ex United pundits seem to have an almost shame in praising United and don't want to be seen to be displaying any sort of bias. Neville is one of the worst for this.

Contrast this with the ex Scouse pundits who are mostly very jingoistic, obnoxious and happy to be partisan.

I thought his article on Sky was good.

Critical voices are needed at any time, when it goes good and when it goes bad.
Speaking from a business POV, those voices are important to strive for improvement. (negativism =/= criticism)

When there are no critical voices left, you should worry.
It either means that you have successfully crusaded and lynched any critic or it's gotten to the point where the critics stopped caring and checked out.

i actually made a similar thread in newbies 6 months ago or so. The guy is an absolute pr...ick
I lost respect for the tw@t pretty much as soon as he started. He even sees fouls from our players which don’t exist he shouldn’t be allowed near our club. Oi you ungrateful turd we pretty much fed and clothed your entire family.

His views are really not far off where the majority of fans’ views are. We haven’t been playing that well, we’ve been dire at home and start every game away really poorly. We’re a really odd team, but still doing very well. Not the craziest view point.
Exactly this, considering how on and off the boil we've been to be 5pts behind with a game in hand in bizarre.

Liverpool or City would have both won 12 or 13 games and drawn 1 or 2 in recent seasons and we'd be miles behind after our home form but we're right up there somehow.

His in game commentary is usually pretty critical but I'd say it's generally fair and he's usually blaming the players over the manager - which I think reflects his knowledge of the game and where he sees the blame based on player performances - more than your typical fan.

Plus, you don't get paid to bore people to death, he needs to say something controversial. Souness just sits there like an old codger moaning about everything and anyone having not played in god knows how long - how he gets the gig I don't know.

Gary Neville is a brilliant pundit to listen to most of the time. You're not always going to get it right as a pundit. The problem is that when you see someone on TV after every game, then you can get sick of them.

Being a pundit is not easy. You can't please everyone. The fans of clubs you critisize will hate you even if your criticism is fair. Carragher and Neville are top pundits.

Neville is a club legend and a much better pundit than most of the dross out there like Michael Owen, Gareth Crooks etc

It is bizarre we are 3rd and could be second if we win our game in hand.. weve been pretty terrible this season and are lucky that everyone else has been terrible too.

An absolute try-hard

pandering to the majority and desperately trying to be noticed. He wouldn’t last 5 minutes if he displayed any leaning to United. Remember the narative... United/Ole : useless and that’s what the viewership want to hear. He’s only concerned about his career as a pundit and showing a United bias would kill that career.

can’t stand the creep.

Doesn't he back Ole to the hilt? To the point where some posters on here a few weeks ago said he was too biased towards Ole and call him out on not speaking out about poor performances.

Also his Twitter feed definitely indicates his pro-United bias whenever we play and he's not covering the match.

He just goes overboard trying to not seem biased, to the point anything not stonewall in United's favour he'll give to the other team.

It's also worth pointing out how much football has evolved since he retired and he's not really been involved with the game at the highest since - I know he's done some coaching with England and the Valencia gig but it's been about a decade. Class of '92 should not be seen as 'current' and BT/Sky punditry is long overdue a bit of a shake up.

FFS, ye sound like a a bunch of 12 year old girls , saying he is dead to ye just because now and again he has a different opinion to ye.

His paid to call it as he sees it and not what you would like it to be..

Some of ye are very paranoid seeing conspiracy’s against us everywhere , be it refs , opposition keepers , pundits et etc
‘Ye’? Are you from the 14th century?

Because it is bizarre. We've 6-1 to Spurs, 3-1 to Palace, 1-0 to Arsenal (Arsenal FFS!) and got a lucky win against Brighton. I'm very happy that we are playing well lately, but it's been a fecked up season.

Gary Neville not top red enough for the top reds apparently

I'd expect players who have achieved everything and worked under such a great would be quite critical to be fair. It's harder for winners like that to lower their standards as quickly as some fans do.

Gary is doing very well for himself as a pundit, really punching above his weight. He did much the same as a player in my opinion and I have to say I admire him for it. He is clearly a huge United fan and he mirrors the views of the majority of the caf after each game. Vitriol when we lose and irrational hysteria when we win.

People should put themselves in his position. Do you think everyone would agree with what you would have to say? There isn't a pundit in the media that you would agree with all of the time. It is his job to at times to be controversial. Clicks and controversy is all that matters in his job.
When I listen to what he has to say, I either agree or disagree with him. No matter what he does say, I see a bloke who served the club with pride and distinction.
So to say Gary WAS a red. Yes he was and STILL is !!

Unless you're gong to call every contentious offside / pen / non-pen VAR decision into account, it's 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw. We ARE third because we deserve to be third. Laws of the game. This just seems to be yet another opportunity for negativity. Why not look at it this way: we're third and we've been a bit pants at times, we had a slow start to the season (no pre-season etc) - what if we 'click' in the coming weeks?

Nev is in a bit of a corner at the minute with Carragher's 'Pool doing alright, he's going to rip into Utd when given the chance, it 'proves' his impartiality, but also highlights his devotion if you like.

False optimism? Possibly. But come on, everything at the moment seems to be an opportunity for a downer, no matter what the thread.

Merry Christmas.

Reading what's being written on this board, why should we be surprised someone is both a fan and capable of being very negative about the team? :)

I don't think Neville is particularly bad. I must say I'm generally appalled at the standards of analysis in punditry and football journalism pretty much everywhere. ESPN, The Guardian, Sky Sports - you'd think they could manage better considering this is their full-time job. They seem to aim for no more than reflecting the surface of fan sentiment. Opinionated rubbish, in so many cases.
