Ole is handling this well. He knows Lingard is no where near good enough and he has phased him out gently, without disrupting the team harmony or spirit.
What he says publicly, or to the players, is diplomatic and with purpose. Ultimately, he can see things clearly, which is why Lingard is not even on the bench these days.

We need to start looking at some of the issues affecting our players and giving them a break.

I've been hearing and reading about his family situation with his mother and siblings and he deserves kudos for taking care of his sister and brother whilst his mum has been receiving treatment.

Ole has also recently come out and said that covid has affected Lingards training and game time. He hasn't had the virus but has had to isolate a few times because of his "bubbles". I'm assuming this is linked with his family situation.

So let's give the lad a break and hope he can sort himself out and come back to be a useful and integral part of the team.
You mean you've fallen for the PR put out by his team. The lad can employ 3 people full time easily to make his siblings cornflakes. Don't be so gullible.

I think we should return back to a simpler way ie when no one is bigger then the club. If Lingard can't step up then he can move to a less demanding club

if Matic can get 3 more years after about 10 good performances in the last 2 seasons and Jones can get a new deal then Jesse was a certainty to be renewed. Yet another curious decision. How are we going to sell him after a renewal when he’s already on too much to sell?

Welcome Lingard like a new signing. He, Jones and Rojo will be just like the three amigos in the new year.

It's not always that simple. Fans tend to just look at one side, usually the negative.

Like I said above Jesse has had family issues and it's worth taking those into consideration.
Those family issues came to a head what, almost two years ago now?

No doubt it was tough for him, at the time, when his mum went off to get help, but it's way overblown to still bring it up as an excuse for him now. It's not like his siblings are toddlers, they're both teenagers, and he certainly isn't short of money to keep them entertained. It's not some sort of never-ending family tragedy.

He's never been good enough to play for United, even as just a squad player, at least not if we're supposed to still consider ourselves a side that aspires to win titles. The only reasons he was given such an extended opportunity was because he was one of the few players who really bought into the 'Mourinho way' and followed his instructions to the letter, and then sentimentalism when Ole initially took over.

I hope this contract signifies that he’s actually dedicating himself to his football again, rather than the other bullshit he’s synonymous with.
Other bullshit, like taking care of his younger siblings and dealing with his mother's mental illness.

I've just finished watching the review for the 06/07 season because the above video appeared in my Youtube algorithm. What a season that was. (Saha had a stormer) Ole's final season for us, and the season we got back our trophy. So I've been pretty much on a positive vibe.

Not gonna lie, reading this thread and seeing Lingard being renewed and us potentially being stuck with him for the foreseeable future has put a bit of dampener on my positivity.

What the hell are you talking about? He probably devoted the time he was spending playing video games to looking after his business. It had no effect on his football. His family problems and his subsequent loss of confidence on the pitch just had a snowball effect that he hasn't recovered from. The JLingz brand does not/did not let the club down.
The quality of his Jesse’s performances did in fact suffer after he went Jlingz on his mates. The evidence is there to see, if you care to do see it.

I want Jesse to be happy in his life and success in selling his merchandise. His decisions are what they are. The issue before us whether it makes any football or commercial sense for United to extend his contract. It clearly does not.

Just scanned the thread looking for the confirmation he's been renewed... didn't find it.

Everyone losing their minds over a rumour that a lad who hasn't played for the club in months is going to be renewed. I know we have a bad track record with this, but come on have some faith.

I want to know whos responisble for giving contracts to players in the club ?! Who decides which player should get a new contract or not/sell him ? Is this the manager ? Matt Judge ? Woodward ? Or they decide together ? Whats the point extending Lingards contract thats 100k a week down the drain. Preserve value my ass, he has no value. Players like him and Jones should be instantly sold if an offer comes if theres no offer then just release them.

I don’t think it’s really for us to decide from our very outside view how much he should or shouldn’t be affected by his family issues. Or how bad it really is. These things are never clear cut and money isn’t a cure to everything.

If we did give him a new contract I can only hopefully presume he’s shown some real intent behind closed doors. I can see him coming in handy if he can get back to his best.

Ole is being sensible with him. He needs to play his way back into the first team. Like everybody else. He is given his fair share of opportunities too. He obviously has the quality but his form is pretty dire at the moment.

The manager must have a say, but ultimateley they are employed by the club, not the manager so i guess its the board? Who has the final say

Lindgard, Jones, Rojo et al has hardly made the bench the last year and a half, so its clear Ole does not rate them. The higher ups probably wants to extend them to avoid them going on a free transfer, but who is going to buy these guys?

A quality that he has barely shown any of it in the last 3 years, his form has been dire for so long now.

Why he's getting an extension? Hell, he doesn't even make the bench in most games. Makes zero sense, what the feck?
Well, it doesn't make zero sense.

The club don't want him leaving for free. Which i get...but what sort of fee are they expecting?

It wouldn't surprise me if the rumors are true, he may even get a pay rise for all we know. I would call bullshit for any other club but not us, no no no we are the club that gave Phil Jones a new contract so anything is possible.

It’s quite unbelievable that we are paying him £75k per week to absolutely nothing.....I’m not sure by giving an extension for another year is going to help us shift him on that wage as in a post pandemic world who is going to pay this type of salary? All that will happen is JL will stay another year on this wage and then leave on a free or we loan him out and subsidise a big chunk. We need to stop making the same mistake. Best for both sides for Jesse to move on now.

I thought Lingard was our best player in a dire first half against Luton earlier in the cup.

He's definitely got the ability if someone can bring it out of him. He would be a championship player or a sort of okay-ish lower level premier League player in the right team. But the rationale for re-signing him may well be Brexit / English tax related as he is a home grown player and can basically be added to the squad for free.

What people in this thread fail to realise is how important that is in various competitions when you can only play limited numbers of "foreign" born players and have to contain a certain number of players trained at your club. Lots of teams (like City and Liverpool for instance) will sign shit English third choice goalkeepers to make up those domestic numbers but we don't need to do that with our squad containing Tuanzebe, Greenwood, Rashford and Henderson, but it's sort of nice to have Lingard as an easy third option for all that too. I can see why we are giving him a new contract with that in mind.

I see Ole has always had that ability to answer inane questions with a smile on his face.

Struggling to think what we might actually need him for???
Exactly, we rotated 9 players last match and there still didnt seem to be a space he could easily take on the bench, as well as new si gongs arriving shortly. There just isnt a spot for him anymore.

In hindsight, it’s a real wonder that he actually played another game for us following on from the West Ham bus debacle.

It’s amazing that this sort of idiocy was able to seep into and spread throughout the dressing room seemingly unchecked.

I really dislike your general ‘Keano would have...’ nostalgia but, let’s be honest, Keano would have planted him one on the jaw there and then.

Anyway, any new contract is to retain his value. It’s a financial decision that probably makes some sort of economic sense, not a football decision. Lingard is done here and Ole has quietly finished him off in that increasingly mellow and quietly ruthless way of his. It’s a non-story, really.

I actually think he's a level higher than the championship but shouldn't be anywhere near a top 6 team in the PL.

And come on half the United squad is homegrown, it will be a long time before the club has any trouble there.

Hopefully it just means he can be sold for some money.... however who would be dumb enough to buy Lingard when there are so many better and likely cheaper players? Hopefully West Ham or something.
