This was surely Martial’s chance to show his worth. Got to be time to move him on. No good even having a back up like him.

Good to see Martial score yesterday, but he still looks a mentally shattered footballer. The talent is there, but it can’t be argued that he has the heart of a proper United striker.

Rashford has a bit less talent than Martial but makes up for it in spades with desire and commitment. Automatic starter for me. But when Cavani is fit, I’d go with him over Martial.

Like it or not, we’re relying on these two to up their game, get back on the score sheet regularly and stay there until the end of the season.
if they can build some momentum and confidence from last night, we should be able to string a decent run together and be in the mix for the run in. This would also take some pressure off Bruno and lower expectations for Cavani.
If we don’t see this uplift, I suspect that might have a significant bearing on our summer transfer activity. I’d say Martial has more to do than Rashford just now.

I dont I think they are a problem at all. Rashford is quality. Martial has been inconsistent, especially in front of goal but i think Cavani will push Martial on and he'll be a success here. Its It's absolutely ridiculous that fans are saying on here that he needs to go.

I do personally think we need another top winger though to help push them all on. Hopefully Diallo is that player we hope he is but who knows. Sancho is the one we need, he is quality and will give us so much added creativity. He plays left and right so will push them all on.

We need numbers in attack and it's only this season that we've started to see depth up top but we are still not there.

Martial has had a drop in form but I think it will come back, he’s already showing signs. Thought he did well enough for you on Thursday.

I'll continue to defend Rashford because even though he misses, he's still in the game active, and more often than not makes an impact.

Martial? Yeah bit of a typical game from him today sadly.

People need to wake up from their delusion that Martial will ever come good.

He's inconsistent as feck and playing him is basically hoping he shows up and plays well or we're playing with a man down because he'll be absolutely useless.

Bump.

We’re not going to win the league when we’re as reliant on this pair, while they’re as inconsistent as they are this season.
Definitely. Ideally you'd have them playing with or rotating with an established top tier striker. They'll get you goals for sure but to win titles you need that consistent top striker that can get goals out of nothing, one that will always be up there in the top scorer charts. A Kane, Salah or Aguero type. Rashford and Martial are still a long way off that.

Martial's effort just isn't good enough. Fernandes and Cavani are the examples of how you should work hard.
Rashford generally works hard but his inconsistent finishing is frustrating.
However, I'm more happy with Rashford's input than Martial's.

They’re both shite if you want to be a top team. We’re not ruthless on the pitch because we aren’t ruthless off it.

Rashford is a driving force for us. Yes, he misses chances but the fact he gets onto the end of so many is because he doesnt stop. He's far from a problem.

Martial, on the other hand, does need to do more.

One of them needs replacing and I will say right now it’s easily Martial. Just doesn’t do anything, doesn’t run and kicks the air whenever he is lining up to finish.

Rashford missed, but he’s moving. Martial is just stood still and you don’t win titles with players that stand still.

Rashford's really cost us twice on big occasions now. Today and against Leipzig. Vital moments that changes the course of a season completely.

No problem with Rashford, he’s in the main had a good season with 13 goals so far, yes he missed one bad header today but was dangerous throughout and scored a good goal anyway.

Martial is becoming an issue. His performances are increasingly becoming more frustrating. Think the clock is ticking on him and he might be moved on if we can get a better forward.

and Martial isn't even involved to get into the positions to miss the chances.

I'm in disbelief that people see these two as an equal thing really.

Was pretty safe when through on goal though. Both too inconsistent

Given that Ole keeps on playing James, I'd wager that this duo isn't exactly worried for their places. Standards are extremely low.

Neither can be relied upon to score goals. Rashford in particular is important to the way we play and is usually involved in everything good we do. To move to the next level martial I think needs to be demoted to a bit part role or moved on. We need a 30 goals a season striker. Greenwood could be that in a few years.

Rashford is inconsistent but even when he doesnt play well he puts a decent shift in...

Martial when he's bad he's really bad. It's like playing with 10 men

Who do we realistically replace him with though? Cavani cannot play week in week out. It's too early for Greenwood. Who else is realistically available on the market to score more goals than him?

Rashford missed a sitter but scored a goal in the same game. It happens. You can't blame him for the sitter and ignore the good finish in his goal either.

Why are you (and not just you - you are all majority unfortunatelly) always on Martial? Thats abolute stupidity. Rashford was terrible and many times in last months was. He doesnt progress at all, he's 4 or 5 times offside per match, thats 4-5 destroyed attacks and I dont talk about many clear chances missed. For example today it was 2 clear chances stupidly missed. Hes always just about to hit it as hard as possible. Plus 4 offsides. Thats 6 attacks thrown out of window just today. Hes not that talented as many of you think here. Hes offten desperate.
Rashford has improved every season. He's twice the player he is from 2016

Has Martial improved signifcantly since 2015? Some would say he has regressed...stalled at least

I like both Rashford more than martial. But quite clear we don't have a goal scorer good enough to be in title race. But I see them both as potential integral parts of a title winning squad.

Rashford has 13 goals and six assists this season. If we have a problem, it isn’t Marcus Rashford.

Nobody scores every chance, but the Gut feeling is Rashford has recently missed more good chances than normal.

But I seem to remember seeing a chart of chances scored as a percentage of chances given, that suggested even the top strikers missed more than we think,..

No idea how to find an updated version of that, anyone know?

He was really good last season, one of the best players in the team. Not exactly sure what has happened this year.

He’s scored 13 and created 6 from the wide left position this season (including 6 in the champions league) but yet you think he’s not talented. Pundits, ex players and opposition managers wax lyrical about him but you know better right?

To some extent this is true, but you also have to take into account the amount of chances he has. We do need him to convert more than he does, realistically, unless we see him as an addition to our attack, rather than our best attacker. I don't have any issue with him at all, but I would really like to see him kick on to become someone you believe will score nearly all of their chances. He misses easy chances on a regular basis.

But the amount of chances he has is due to him. It’s a talent to get into goal scoring positions regularly. His finishing could do with improving but provided he keeps getting chances and making them for others then he’s doing what he should be. If you take a third of your chances then you’re a bloody good forward. We shouldn’t have to rely on our strikers scoring three goals a game.
