I haven't seen the game yet. Did he set us up well? How did we concede so late in the game?

Good post.

‘tis thread should be closed untill atleast closer to the season end. It’s pathetic
A good example is last week. James starting caused lots of hissy fits and even cries of cowardice. James played well, scored and we won 6-2. Nobody rushes in to correct themselves or reconsider. Literally any dropped point is seen as vindication of shock at these supposed obvious 'mistakes'. It's so tiresome it's literally a case of throwing enough shit at a wall and some sticking.

It doesn't prove anything and certainly doesn't prove any sort of tactical prowess from a given poster.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
We play the best football since SAF left. We have the best squad since SAF left. We SHOULD finish top 4 consecutively for the first time since SAF left. We have one of the youngest squads around and are now after the right players such as Haaland, Bellingham, Sancho et al. If the board finish the rebuild off and invest properly on the 4 players we need over the next 18 months then regardless of if Ole wins anything we will be in an infinitely better position than when he took over. Yes there may be doubts as to whether he can take us that final step but up until now he’s done a very good job - certainly far better than any of his predecessors. If he came in with the reputation of a fancy top coach he’d probably be getting the respect he actually deserves instead of constantly being one bad performance away from the media and some fans calling for him to be sacked all the time.

We played very well in parts, dominated and should have won but missed good chances. Undone by a cross and vardy slipping away from bailly.

Goals happen in football, there isn't always a person to crucify but many will try find one.

6 wins and 2 draws in our last 8 PL games. City hone n Leicester away hardly gimmies.

Lock this thread ffs. He's doing a good Job. We just need a defence that's a match for our attacking players. Not a single clean sheet away all season tells its own story.

I don't think he's a good enough manager for United to take us where we want to be but it's certainly not because of games like today and he's done enough thus far to at least get to the end of the season unless this is the start of a negative downward spiral. Losing in the Champions League the way we did is definitely something that will need to be revisited at the end of the season but can be ignored if we manage to do well in the league and/or other cups. For now though, he is going nowhere.

Unless there's another good active thread to discuss Ole's performance as a manager this should stay open.

I don't get why people want to close the only active and regular thread about discussing the manager ? The one in the performance forum is dead, no one posts there. People aren't saying "sack him now" consistently in this thread. It's just a discussion about the manager's form either positive or negative.

If someone hates this thread so much, they can put it on ignore, but there should be at least one active big thread to discuss the manager in it.
Great, have a discussion thread about Ole.

having a thread questioning whether he should be sacked or not being bumped after every match, even though we’re clearly in a good run this year and it would be madness to sack the manager.

I’m all for a performance thread, if this is that and it’s just called would you sack Ole fair enough

Result has nothing to do with him today. That defence is a calamity. The midfield has absolutely no composure.

Some strange moves, though. Lindelof at RB, Pogba at LW, but otherwise he set us up correctly, but that game itself was sloppy.

The 2 midfielders were essential today and played well against the Leicester midfield. James wasn’t the right selection against Leicester though.
You can just put any team instead of Leicester. If it is not Leicester it is Chelsea, Leipzig, Saints, Su....
How other teams, who are much weaker than us, can play with one dmc? Of course that defence is better with Fred-McT combo but by that logic it would be even better with Matic-Fred-McT, right?
We have very good team and it is wrong to play with both McT and Fred while benching creative players like Pogba or VVD.

Sums up my thoughts. Definitely not on Ole. I think he's managing Cavani well too.

The only thing that annoyed me today was the inclusion of James in the starting line-up. Simply doesn't have enough quality on the ball to be part of this squad, and there should be enough players to rotate in three positions between Rashford, Martial, Greenwood and Cavani. James was, IMO, there to provide support for the CB playing at RB, meaning that we had 8 players with defensive duties first on the pitch.

Ole's still too scared to really go for it IMO, and you need that courage if you want to mount a title challenge seeing as a draw means two points dropped. Can't complain too much about the result, but we're still at the stage where our defence keeps making sloppy mistakes. The opposition doesn't really need to create much to put two past us, and that's a big problem since we're going to have off days and not be able to score 2+ goals ourselves every game.

I wish Ole would actually understand that he needs to bring a defensive coach in to help him out with that part, but it seems like Phelan, McKenna and Carrick as a coaching team is a hill he's willing to die on.

And the thread in performance forum is dead. People seem to find posting here easier than there, either those who support him or not. The discussions here haven't all about just sacking him and all that. So either tell people the one in performance forum is the main one and close this or change the title of this thread to be the performance one and close the other.

But at the moment it's clear the majority are just treating this as the performance thread and not just "sack him now" one. Mods have to choose one of them to keep and close the other.
It needs the inflammatory title and poll removing and then you would have a point (and we'd probably get better 'discussion').

You are also a storied and long time moderator of this forum.

So keeping this thread open makes mockery of this forum as a place for serious football discussion.

Our defending is just not good enough. We are great on the counter, but needs to start seeing out games unless we score big.

I think sacking him shouldn't even be a discussion right now because he's getting results.

I'm expecting a top 4 finish and then I hope Ole gets the players he desires in the summer which will hopefully help us play a more expansive game. For me the most important areas to improve are the base of midfield, CB and a new RB to rotate with AWB. But if Laird can stay injury free then he could come into the equation too.

You're saying this stuff as if you're some sort of expert and these things are black and white, that any casual observor can see. Football isn't so simple that you get to just say 'mistakes' for things you don't agree with.

Didn't like the line up, but we have 4 games in about a week now. Mixed things up and should have been leading at half time despite the supposed line up mistake.

Didn't like the formation change after James came off? Did we not dominate then and score again? Surely this was correct change?

Moaning that he didn't bring on matic? Thats a first on this forum, and laughable really. We had plenty on defensively and got undone by good movement and a lucky deflection. I suspect that if they had equalised with matic on you or many like you would be complaining that he invited the pressure with a defensive sub.

So many posters just use retrospect to support their opinion literally every time we don't win. It's a ridiculous and impossible standard.
OK! I challenge you a little bit.

1. Starting a players who isn’t 100% healthy when you have decent replacements is black and white in my book. First Viggo isn’t a natural FB, he’s primarily a CB.

2. His first decision to start Lindelöf make us vulnerable and that’s why he starts James, a player who clearly isn’t good enough at this level. So the first mistake leads to the second one. If we started with Axel as a RFB we could have started with either Greenwood or Cavani. Judging from James and Victor’s time at the pitch it was a clear mistake, both of them didn’t perform well.

3. I give you that Pogba changed the momentum of the game and that we scored a second goal but at the same time was his defending horrendously bad when Vardy scored his goal. But let’s not split hairs. I give you that this wasn’t black and white.

4. In my book Fred didn’t perform well the last 30 minutes. I think that was clear as daylight. But the first initial mistake is leading to the second and the third. Start with Axel and Greenwood and we should have more options to change players in the second half. Maybe I’m judging too harsh but it’s so unnecessary.

5. Cutting silly mistakes is all on our coaching staffs responsibility. It’s called discipline and you do that by introducing simple options how to handle stressful situations. I want Ole to do well in every situation so that’s why I get irritated when he does unnecessary mistakes that could be avoided.

Do you think we have a reliable enough no9? I think we need that more than a RW now, given we have youth options at RW.

What exactly is a players responslayibility if its not to cut out silly mistakes?
How does a manager do that on the field of play, use his remote control?

You simply created an unsubstantiated laundry list of imaginary issues, so you can continue with nonsensical criticism for the manager. Why not use that creative brainpower for a better purpose?

If we finally get the right wing sorted then relying on a number 9 will be less important. We also have Greenwood to potentially make the number 9 his own in the future.

I don't get this. He's the manager, it's his job to make sure our defence is better and its his job to sort out the missed chances. He's done a good job in some other aspects but he has to sort the defence out - well someone on the coaching staff has to.

Of course he should be applauded or criticized left and right - but can anyone justify there being a thread with a poll asking if a manager should be sacked when we right now are among the best clubs in the country, have picked up 27 points from 14 matches, and 20 points from the last 8 ?

Hardly!

Then perhaps it could be opened towards the end of the season - if we are 3rd or 4th - and 25 points behind Liverpool. Granted!

Well sammsky there are many things a manager can do to create confident decision making. Make sure that in certain situations players only have one option to chose. Give the players clear instructions to;

a) pass the ball to your teammates preferred foot, if possible in front of his movement.

b) make movements so you make yourself available for passes

c) do not walk with the ball, do not walk without the ball when you are involved in a situation

d) don’t put your teammates in stressful situations with sloppy backward passes

e) don’t dribble in you own half

f) don’t pass the ball sloppy to the goalie when you’re inside the penalty area

g) only one touch when you have an opponent just behind you

This is only a few thing a manager can implement to his squad. Any decent manager tries to absolve his players from unnecessary decision making. Try to shorten any thinking process to a minimum. If a player only have one option it will give him time to focus on execution.

All these things are coachable and on the manager to implement. I do not put all the blame on Ole but it is his responsibility to address some of these problems if we repeatedly make the same mistakes over and over again.

From my comments here you can see that I do not think Ole has it to make it to the top but today I do not see a coaching issue as per se. We have played well in the couple of previous games so to me it is a more tactical issue. I really do not understand why he went to Lindelof as RB unless he was unable to play as CB. If he was not fit then he should not have started Lindelof at all. It takes a while to get a partnership going. I have obviously not seen the match yet.
I do not think Poch is the man and if we sack Ole we need someone better than him obviously and right now `I do not think anyone is free? `I would be really happy if he gets a much more experienced coach to assist him rather than Carrick and McKenna. Please don't say Mike Phelan. The only thing he is good at is bursting balloons.

I’ve said this before and those in charge are clearly keen for this eyesore to remain at the top of the forum.

The thread should be closed and discussion should take place in the performance discussion thread. You would actually get a (slightly) better quality of discussion going on, too. I mean, I wasn’t impressed with Ole today at all. The Lindelof at right back move was odd, and his inclusion cost us a substitution as a result of it being completely obvious that he is carrying an injury. The James inclusion was also poor.

Those interested in discussing the above points don’t really have an obvious (and active) place to do so. By shutting this thread down and and diverting all discussion into the performance thread you clear up a lot of the mess.

I’m not alone in this thinking, clearly.

Nothing wrong with this thread staying up just like all the old ones of last few years. It works just as much in defense of him getting into a position of retaining his role than a call to sack him. It's right that it's a continuous discussion rather than new threads if we slip into poor form. Sensitive souls some of you.

Performances are starting to match results so if we can keep this up he'll be here next season.

I don't think we do and can see why one would prioritize signing one. But for me I feel if we improved the the build up phase which starts with the defense and deeper midfielders, then it would allow us to play with a higher line, more risk and also enable us to control games better.

It's not the first time. The top reds like to have this convo after every non-loss to show their loyalty to the cause.

They like to debate by shutting down debate because they know they'd lose the argument, apart from using their usual 'can't you see the progress', 'go support another club' or 'people disagreeing with me are stupid'.

It's a moderating team. Generally, all decisions are made mutually.
Stop explaining yourself to these insecure individuals.

Never in life have I seen so much talk about banning a thread which clearly has significance to how the fan base feel as a whole. There’s a big divide and this thread represents it.

When the atmosphere changes so will this.

Since 22.december the following has happened:
Keep Ole: +34 votes
Sack Ole: - 17 votes
Total votes: + 17 votes
So, about 1.13% of the «sack Ole» voters have changed their vote the last 4 days. Change happens, but i’m sure some of the votes would never be changed even if we won the treble.

This was a massive statement match that we could have won and he starts James & a clearly injured Lindelof - if you replace these 2 players with Pogba & Tuanzebe IMO we win the match as we still had great options off the bench - Cavani, Greenwood and DVB.

Harvey Barnes was their main attacking threat and Lindelof was a dithering wreck at RB - he's been decent at CB but his mobility is clearly affected by his back and he needed a rest in this match.

It’s got less to do with being sensitive and more to do with not having a centralised place to discuss issues such as Ole starting James earlier today. Any opportunity for productive discussion is lost between two threads, one of which is seldom active.

It’s a no-brainer, really.

We are starting to resemble Liverpool a year or two after Klopp took over. We are decent in midfield and attack at times but there are serious question marks in the defence. A lack of leadership, poor individual errors, naivety, and lapses of concentration plague the defence. Under any sort of pressure we give away stupid goals. Its incredibly frustrating. Ole is still making bizarre selections. Picking James today in front of Greenwood, mata and Vander beek was a huge mistake. You could see why he was useful against a naive Leeds team where there are huge gaps to run into but against a better Leicester team this wasnt going to work. Picking Lindelof at right back was also silly. How many times has he played there? surely Axel would have been a better and more natural fit there.

I would say we are 3 very good players short of seriously challenging for the premier league. A centre back, defensive midfielder and right attacking player. How good would we be if Martial, Bruno and Rashford had someone on their wavelength up the pitch. We have made progress, especially with the style of football played and signings, but we are still short. Im still to be convinced Ole's the right guy because of the in game management and team selections but should he seal top 4 he will remain in the job, but the problem will be Liverpool will win 20.

Can we not just call this the OGS thread and get rid of the vote now. Clearly it’s split between both sides of the fence with extreme agendas which swings one way or the other on the latest result and the odd sensible balanced approach in between. By the way I think how gutted we all are at dropping points today is yet another reason as to why we are progressing and the future is bright,
