Am I the only one who wants to see him get a run of games on the right before writing him off? (But yeah he's crap on the left)

TFM is almost 3 years older, more injury prone and has two PL flop loans on his CV. Williams showed more potential last season than TFM ever has done.

I don't think TFM is the main backup. Williams has barely turned 20 and is still at a stage where regular games for the U23s is a learning curve. I'd be surprised and annoyed if TFM is given the nod ahead of Williams tonight.
True. I like the kid. And I've seen enough to say that Williams has good potential.

He's performing worse in trainings?
Should go out on loan this Jan. TFM is ahead of him on the bench and Axel too on the pitch.

How much free-fall is he undergoing since his lucrative contract? Potential to be the next deadwood? He is always been limited technically, but he got that "fire" and "daring" when he play, last 2-3 games he played I'm not seeing that at all. Felt like long ago he last play.

Whenever we've seen him this season he's been like a headless chicken. Some experience elsewhere would be massive for him.

I thought he did well when he came on against Leipzig away. My memory isn't the best, but from what I can recall I was annoyed by the like-for-like substitution of a full-back when chasing the game, and then pleased by him actually winning the ball high up the pitch on a couple of occasions, taking a bit of a beating for the team and drawing at least one foul in a dangerous position. Can't fault the guy's tenacity and application, and there have been times when I've been impressed with how composed he's been under pressure as well. A loan deal might be a good thing for him, but definitely don't think United should sell. I mean, even seasoned pros can find it difficult to get into the rhythm when only playing a bit here and there, and he's just a kid, barely getting his career started. Think he's shown enough for the club to take a bit of a chance on him.

Is he injured? Just saw the lineup vs Leicester. Wan-Bissaka is dropped, Lindelof seems to replace him. I though Williams would be our RB back up after signing Telles.

He's going in January, barely had a sniff this season. Started off well but very quickly lost his way. He could still have a chance here though if he has a good loan somewhere.

Well with Lindelof and AWB being injured looks like he better stay.

My understanding is that he started on the right, but then when Laird came along Williams moved over to the left around U14's or so.
i think he now can play on both sides. It’s good to have a player like this, reminds me of phil neville in that sense. Not sure what is keeping him away, is it poor performances or is it maybe that he’s leaving on loan in January (read somewhere that this is an option). We didn’t see much of him this year and i can’t judge much as he needs a good run of games for me to be able to judge him, but from what i saw last year, he is a good player overall, of course needs to mature, but he has the right attitude to be a united player. He has that ruthless attitude in his personality which we actually miss these days

I think he's going on loan in January which is why the manager probably thinks better playing player the ones who will still be here.
People always say things like this. The manager will play who he thinks is best for the next game. Perhaps if he actually impressed he may even change the boss’ mind about sending him on loan at all!

There is no way Ole will overlook someone he feels is a better option for any given match, it makes no sense.

What I don’t get is the ridiculous new contract he was given. We gave him a 5 year deal at £65k a week, then signed Telles a couple of months later, probably paying him a not too dissimilar wage. And let’s not go into the RB conversation, it only seems to be posters on here that see him as a RB, and there has been little indication ever that Ole sees any future for him there. AWB is first choice RB, and Ole has favoured TFM there as understudy, and even Axel. Many reports suggest Ole wants to bring in a RB to compete with AWB as early as January too, so there’s little hope for Williams in this role.

All indications at present are that he’s not in Ole’s plans at all, which again, makes his new contract baffling.

Including all possible bonuses. With him not playing at all, he won't be getting that money.

Okay, well I don’t know the specifics of course. Still, he doesn’t seem to be in Ole’s plans yet we resisted interest for him in the summer and gave him a 5 year deal. Only to buy a replacement in his position.

No one say he’s better than the others right now. Williams actually played more this season than Mensah.

Ole knows he’s currently not on the level that ready to help us to reach what we are aiming for this season, so he’s going on loan to get more games time to develop as a player. With Bissaka in the team, he’s likely getting less minute and won’t develop.

Players signing contract and then loaned out is very common in football.

Bissaka is a right back, and Williams is a left back, to the people who matter anyway. Ole just signed a new, LB, and reportedly wants a new RB. Loaning him for 6 months is kicking the can down the road, and not very far down the road either. It’s just 6 months.

That does happen, but not in the same set of circumstances usually. Often those who need to build up some transfer value perhaps, or one who is not ready now but is felt they will come back to take a spot they will have opening up in a year, or at least challenge the incumbent.

Loaning a player, and then signing a replacement is not a common strategy to integrate them into the team surely.

Check Chelsea, how many of them were loaned out after signing contract (well they will get loan deal only if they sign contract), they signed loads of players, few of them made the first team squad as better players and few of them are sold for good money.

Take Zouma as example, first team player, loaned out multiple times and also signed contract before getting loaned out. Now he is one of their best CB.

Chelsea’s players were loaned out by a different manager to the one who has seen value in them. Some of them were even loaned to said manager at the time! Chelsea, in the main, have been loaning players to maintain or increase their value, before ultimately selling them without giving them any opportunity at all.

Lampard is different. If he were in keeping with their previous practice, he’d have loaned Abraham, Mount and co - but he kept them because he rates them. I imagine previous managers loaned them because they didn’t.

Then it's nearly impossible to come up with players as the life span of managers is very small at single club. Usually top clubs loan out the players and they stay for 2-3 years max.

Welbeck was loaned out by SAF and then played him regularly.

Maybe wrong but same with Odegaard and Zidane.

Why are you downplay 6 months football to suit your narrative? First, remember, the season has been pushed late compared to normal season means exact last year was teams already played about 4 league games extra than now. Second, 6 months is still lot of games better than sitting on the bench rarely getting chances. Not to mention Leverkusen is also considering to take him means he will also get even more which combined league and Europa league games.

I agree that the situation is weird. To the extent that I almost worry if it is some personal issue.

But I dont think this is correct. He played RB once last year and a couple of times this year. He has also played there a few times the past year for U23.

And considering he is right footed, it will be easier for him to play on the right. The fact that he is right footed was a bit of an issue for him in build up play a few times.

It is interesting that Leverkusen and Southampton is interested. Both clubs are quite good at picking up young talents. I also noticed that Smarterscout had a piece on him being very positive.

What makes him a RB?

I’m downplaying 6 months because it makes no difference as Shaw and Telles will not have gone anywhere in 6 months. Williams is ‘rarely getting chances’ because he has been replaced. Last season, in the exact same set of circumstances - he got chances. Shaw was inevitably injured, so he played. This season, to cover for any injury to Shaw, we bought Telles, who has played instead. Williams going on loan for 6 months does what exactly? Not to mention he’ll likely barely get a kick at Southampton or Leverkusen either!

Andy Mitten said if you asked him last season if Williams had a place at the club he'd have said 100%, now he said he's not even sure he's got a future anymore. Something must have happened? Either the end of season performances last year or something personal?

He’s played there nowhere near enough. He’s no more a RB than Serge Aurier, TFM or Tuanzebe are left backs. They have all played there before. He is clearly a LB, having played more than 90% of his football there for they last 4 years.

Him being right footed, as opposed to any real suggestion that he is seen as a RB, seems to be why everyone on here seems to call him one.

Don’t get me wrong, I can see the simple logic as to why many say he’s a RB. He’s a full back, and is right footed. It would be the natural order of things. But in terms of trying to place him in some sort of pecking order at RB, that is near impossible because his manager doesn’t seem to have him in any sort of pecking order for the role. And there has been plenty of opportunity for him to do so, even last season where he was more in favour. On here, I read daily that h The back up RB to Bissaka - I’m just saying there’s little evidence of that in reality. He seems far more likely to get a game on the left than the right of he’s given a run out.

Must be personal. Lack of effort in training or a poor attitude.

I don't remember any of his performances being particularly awful, certainly no worse than some of the other dross that we've had playing over the last few years.

It might just be a case that he's said he wants to go on loan so we we're keeping him aside for the January window.

It does seem odd he hasn't played more especially with AWB being worked into the ground.

He’s a natural right foot full back, of course he is both right and left back. Similar to Phil Neville plays both right and left. He was used as right back against Istanbul and remember he was originally right back converted to left back because Laird plays right back while we probably didn’t have a left back in academy.

Development is not just based on 6 months. Players develop within years!

You need to start somewhere, getting 6 months on loan of football is the next step after last season, and then if the manager still thinks he’s not ready yet then he can go on loan again. The guy is still 20 ffs. You are making it sounds like he is already above 23 and has only 6 months left in his development. How do you know he will likely barely get a kick at Southampton and Leverkusen?

I reckon he’ll stay and play about 10 games in all competitions this season. We need him as back-up, because we can’t have TFM playing another whopping 5 games this season like he did last year!
10 looks a bit conservative of a guess from me. He’s on 7 in all comps at the moment. Maybe double that. 14 if he doesn’t go on loan this January?

I’d think it’s simply the case that there’s two pretty seasoned players ahead of him in the position he plays who are quite better at football than him.

I agree that it is difficult to put him there. But in five years time, he will be a right back. Of that, I’m rather confident.

Maybe it is strategy from OGS? Easier to ask for a new right back when he has to play Lindelof, Tuanzebe or TFM there.

I found these quotes from OGS on Williams a bit weird too;

«He had a slow start to the season for different reasons. I think he’s now coming back to himself. I can see more Brandon being Brandon again.»
