Potential RB Options

We recently showed interest in Trippier until he got himself banned.

Ole has already used TFM at RB this season, despite the fact he has no future at the club. And in the last few weeks, we've seen Lindelof and Tuanzebe filling in when Wan-Bissaka has been injured.

Putting it all together, I think Ole both wants and needs another body to compete at rightback the way Telles/Shaw are competing at leftback.

Who are the realistic options? Laird (injuries) and Williams (lack of opportunities) don't appear to be in our thinking.

According to Ole?

His contract ends at the end of this season, and we're not breaking our necks to get him signed up.
I don’t know about neck breaking, but his contract is ending and reports have explicitly said that Ole wants him to stay and have/will offer him a new contract.

Not only that, but he has been very much involved in the squad, which indicates he’s valued to whatever degree. He came onto the pitch in what was out most important game of the season for one.

But he's not been picked at rightback in our last two games despite him being available and AWB being absent. If he had been, this thread wouldn't exist.

Do you honestly think he's got a future at the club or are you just being contrarian for the sake of it?

I'd like to see what happens if James was converted to a RB. He has the fitness and the speed, and his offensive output is better than AWB. Could be a good way to enhance his career...

Yet he has a new contract offer sat waiting for him!

To be honest I’d love to see Laird given a chance, he has the potential to displace AWB.

Weak in the air, doesn’t win physical battles, always looks better on the left, need I go on with what’s wrong with you post?

The way Barnes was slipping past him I doubt he will ever be a RB, let alone a good one.

He's physically weak, 5'5, little understanding of wing play, inept defensively, and underwhelming at crossing the ball. I wouldn't like to see what happens.

Lamptey is the player in the Premier League I'd spend big for, but he seems to be having too many injury problems.

I wouldn't be against signing a player of Telles' profile though. Someone at the mid-point of their career with plenty of games under their belt and wouldn't cost much. Unlike with Telles though, I'd favour a runner this time. A full-back more interested in creating combinations and overlapping the winger.

He's too weak to be a fullback.

As for the OP, we definitely need an attacking fullback whether that comes from the academy or a signing. Telles doesn't seem to be the attacking force many hyped him up to be so the requirement remains and we may as well add it at RB given we have two first team LBs now. Would love for us to sign a RB who genuinely threatens teams.

I think we need a ball playing RB. None of our back line can really be trusted with the ball at their feet, and playing out from the back is essential. Also would provide a nice contrast with AWB. Who this playmaking RB might be I do not know unfortunately.

The contract offer has been there for almost 3months now why hasn`t he signed it yet? If he was DESPERATE to stay he`d have signed it thats a sign he doesn`t see a future at Utd

I`ve read 2 reports from Luckhurst saying he does have an offer on the table but he is reluctant to sign as he`s considering his options which makes sense. He knows he`ll get more game time elsewhere plus leaving for free guarantees a higher salary and juicy signing on fee and frankly he`s not the type of player Utd will be desperate to offer a big wage for to keep he`s gone IMO otherwise he`d have signed that deal by now if he was DESPERATE to stay

The only really why we're giving TFM a new contract is to protect his value. If he was part of Ole's plans he would have played vs Everton or Leicester. TFM is not good enough anyway and I expect to see him gone in the summer. So I totally agree with you.

I thought Williams might now be backup RB, but it doesn't look that way and I would send him on loan in January. I would love Laird to grow into that spot but he just cannot stay fit. I think the club seemingly wants a more experienced RB, maybe that's why they were interested in Trippier? But I would definitely want a backup RB and preferably one that's good on the ball and obviously can still defend. I think that will help our buildup immensely.

I like Lamptey but I'm not sure the club will go after a young RB after signing AWB.

Can’t Remember the last time I was happy with a fullback that we signed

Not saying that Lamptey doesn't look a good player, but it's funny pointing out James' height (he's 5'7" by the way) and then picking a guy who actually is 5'5" at a push.

Of course it’s an issue. Just like left back was a massive issue that has since been solved through the signing of Telles. It’s nearly January and we haven’t had the season-old story of playing dross like Young at full back for a month as a result of Shaw’s inevitable six week absence. Instead, we played an actual left back who, while not amazing, is perfectly acceptable cover and competition.

Wan-Bissaka needs the same kind of competition; somebody who can stay fit, cross a ball and offer something different. I quite liked the sound of Trippier prior to the ban.

And no, our other options are not enough. Williams is clearly going out on loan, Fosu-Mensah is shite and Dalot (who is already out on loan) is an abysmal defender.

This is as obvious the the left back situation was. Hopefully we don’t dick about for too long.

Even if we don't keep tfm we have Dalot... Williams... laird
I don't think we will be spending money on back up for awb and I don't think we will be replacing him
Laird is still just a kid, Williams is being linked with many clubs on loan and Dalot is not in Ole`s plans anymore last season when he played TFM at LB vs Crystal Palace when Dalot was available should have told everyone he`s done for here. We need a RB

James' height isn't a major reason why I wouldn't want him at RB though. That's the difference.

Ole clearly used Telles as a way of teaching a d oversee Shaw alot of his deficiencies and he is looking like a well rounded player more and more now. Telles is still useful because he is a more gung ho version of a LB something that Shaw is not.

I really like the idea of him doing this for Wan Bissaka.

I think he might, and I think Ole likes him. Which is basically what I said.

I’m in love with Lamptey as a player, he is exactly the player we need.

Doesn’t he mainly play as wing back for Brighton?

I’d be a bit worried about him playing in a back four with crosses to the back post.

Villas right back, Matt Cash, seems to be on the up. Could he be an option?

How does Laird look? From what I've seen there's definite promise there.

Personally I think AWB is first choice, then we have easily enough cover (TFM, Axel, Lindelof, Dalot, Laird) that the money would be much better spent on a DM or RW.

On TFM, we've offered him a new deal but I think it's just sat on the table from what I can see online. I personally think he should be kept and used more as a backup CB - I still think he's got great potential at CB and is still so young.

What’s going on with Laird at the moment ? I’ve not actually watched anything since the restart last season in regards to our under 23’s but from what I’ve seen of him prior to the restart Laird has the potential to displace AWB in home games where we have more emphasis on attacking, it’s because of us having Laird I wouldn’t want us going for Max Aarons but if Laird isn’t a realistic option then Aarons is the one for me.

Max Aarons would be good purchase.. He's 5' 10" and will be 21 next week... He's already made over 100 first team appearances for Norwich.. scoring 4 goals... He's an attacking right back who can also play as left back... He is a better option than Williams at this moment in time.. however a loan move and regular game time would improve Williams.. It's just shame Laird has had his injuries as i would prefer him to get a chance.
