The meltdown on here is embarrassing. We've kept on a squad player who could be very important to keep around the place if there's an injury crisis. Everyone wanted Bailly sold but he's suddenly putting in some good performances, so worth having these squad players around the place if they have the right attitude.

Lingard is known to train well, doesn't cause trouble. We might even get a few bob for him in the summer.

It's the logical decision.
I'd rather play Hannibal for a one off game if things got that bad injury wise rather than waste squad space and money on the off chance that we need Lingard.

What a message this sends out about raising standards. You can be this poor and no worries, you still get paid

It's not hard to understand, good age still, well capable of scoring & creating a goals, decent number of games for England, and would improve alot teams right now in the premiership, etc.

Lingard has always been an easy target for alot of United fans, but we have alot of other players on the books far more worthly of this imo.
 What is this nonsense? The guy is notoriously unproductive.

It’s almost charity at this point. Unless of course we can get a transfer fee in the summer.

Imagine where we would be right now without idiotic moves like this one. Our CEO and his cronies are imbecilic village idiots. Ole is doing well in spite of them, not because of anything they have done.

Tragic stupidity

They won’t want to lose him for free, he could have spoke to clubs from tomorrow

He’s obviously for sale, the club rightly want a fee for him

The club might be better cutting their losses, and given their previous record of selling the deadwood, I have absolutely no faith they will fare any better with Lingard this summer.

We will likely be in the same situation next December.

It would be acceptable if there is a gentlemen's agreement between the club and the player that he will sign for another club by summer, even that means he is taking wage cut. But if not, then this is a big feck up, and he will end up running out the contract for another year.

Lingard is one injury to Tony/Marcus/Bruno away from starting for us. That's the sad reality of our squad right now.

I can see teams going in for Lingard he’s not in the same bracket as Jones/Rojo etc. I actually think he’d be a great signing for a mid table club. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a loan move in January with a fixed transfer fee attached for the summer.

what happens when nobody wants to buy him and he walks for free anyway? Nobody wants to buy him now, will be a year older and a year not playing
As long as we don't put an unreasonable price tag on him, we should be able to sell.

He’s really not. Mata, VdB, Cavani, Pogba, James etc are all ahead of him, and you’d imagine Diallo will be too.

I find this a odd one. I don’t see the point tbh. He’s not going to play and we’ll struggle to find someone who’ll pay for him.

Why do Utd do this? Or why does Woodward do this. He has no future at the club. Do what Gill and Fergie used to do, wish them well get them out. Contract extension fecking hell. More money on a player who wont get new the XI on the bullshit pretence of keeping his market value up.

Bailey's problem is injuries, he's actually a good defender (if poor in the air). Lingard was a good squad player in 2017 & 2018 but he's been genuinely awful for 2 years now, needs a move

My bet here is that he'll be sold in the summer and triggering the option is sound financial risk mitigation as he can leave for free next summer if he's out of contract.

Or ..... we know that he's been a decent player and may have been told he has one final chance to get back into contention.

Either way its not the brainless move some of you drama queens want it to be.

The way some people talk about him you'd think we're looking Obertan or Bebe level here, yes Lingard has dipped off for the last couple of seasons, probably got a bit big for his boots, thought he was better then he is, etc, but there's also been bits in the media as what might have contributed to it also, it's sad how it's sprialled downhill for him really, but there's easily time to turn it around.

He has unquestionably played well for us in the past, has been picked by every United manager, and has a decent load of games for England, I'm not sure what the issue is with him, if we don't want him in the summer we can sell him, they'll be plently of takers at the right price.

What a meltdown in here.

Big deal, we may get some cash for him in the summer, we may not.....who cares and dont start whingeing about squad space etc. Its only a 12 month extension.
Its incredibly daft though.

He has no value in this market and even less on the pitch, yet the club keeps on extending him in the hopes that some imaginary buyer is going to fork over a big bag of money for a 27 yo that is simply not PL quality

Its clear Ole does not rate him. Has he even made the bench this year?

Baffling

Probably partly compassionate. He has been through a heck of lot this season from a personal point of view and this is why he hasn't been around the squad I understand.

Well I would argue that he is PL quality. Certainly not united quality but he would be a starter for most of the bottom half teams, you cant convince me that the likes of Burnley's players or say Hendrick for Newcastle as an example are better than Lingard. Most of those players will never get an England cap whereas Lingard has had a decent international career, scored winner in FA cup final and is only now entering his prime years - that's how the club are viewing this and rightly so.

Also look at the sums Liverpool receive for reserve players. I appreciate the situation is complicated by his wages but £10/15m for Lingard is not outrageous in my view.

The contracts for Jones and Rojo were dumb but not this one.

It's not just that, it's the fact that the lesson hasn't been learned despite almost a decade of doing the same thing and seeing the same results.

Rewarding mediocrity breeds mediocrity. Talented, impressionable youngsters look at guys like Lingard on the training ground and then see him getting rewarded with new deals and assume that's the level they need to be aspiring to.

I thought the club had started to drag ourselves out of this self inflicted mire but extending his deal is just more of the same.

I don't give a shit tbh as the guy barely features anymore. Stupid extension though.
He has zero ambition to revive his career elsewhere or something ?

Good move by the club to extend Jesse's contract.

If he can get himself fit, if he gets consistent, if he get his head out of his arse, if he decreases in age by about 5 years and if he can become decent at football. Then he has the time on his side and potential to be a really good squad option.

I think it's to call his bluff personally.

He's shown absolutely zero ambition or effort to get back into the United first team this season, when he's played it's been against lower opposition and he's been average.

I think he is currently happy to sit on his contract for one more year and wait for it to expire next season to get himself a 'good' move on a free as there probably won't be a lot of movement this coming summer due to no fans.

However, locking him into a two year deal now means he has to force a way out if he wants to play or get himself back in the first team ASAP. Not a single club in any top flight will touch a footballer who has hardly kicked a ball for 3 years on £100k a week.

Expect him gone this summer.

Or there is the scenario where he doesn't give a feck anymore and is happy with whatever Utd is giving him

100k a week should not be “compassionate” while his team mate is fighting hard to put food on the table of families making 1/4 of that or less over a whole year.

Possibly but do you believe any professional footballer in their mid 20's who has played at international level is really happy just to get paid and disappear into obscurity?

I can yeah. I have seen it with a much better player in Bale even. The man was ready to go to China just to get paid the same.
If Lingard has ambition, he would have forced a move last summer, even for a lower league team

What a piss take. Surely it’s an attempt to retain value and sell him in the summer? Surely

To be fair, similar things were said about Ashley Young, and he left us to join Inter last January. The same goes for Darmian in the summer. Whilst we can't rule out anything, I have a feeling that Lingard might be hungrier for first-team football (and a chance to get back into England's lineup) than we think.

Regarding England, especially, with players like Winks and Alli barely getting any football. There's a chance that Lingard can get himself back into contention if he leaves in January.

I think they're different cases. Bale has won everything at club level and is in his 30's. Lingard has previously stated he's worked hard to fulfil his dream of playing for United and he's not giving up on it anytime soon. Being at United is living the dream for him, whereas Bale just wants a payday.

Lingard hired Raiola to get a move but not even that scumbag could get him something decent, so he's probably been advised to wait out his contract and get a move to a club that want him but aren't willing to splash the cash.
