We don't half like to make life hard for ourselves do we? Deserved to win, but were incredibly fortunate not to be punished for poor finishing. We need to be more clinical.

Such a clutch game. And it was super enjoyable to watch with the only downer being the referee who is just terrible and always seems to affect us when refing our games.

The only negative is the lack of Donny and the James sub at the end.

Another win against one of the better teams in the league this season. We're making really good progress now. Can't wait for the Liverpool game.

Brilliant result. We look a lot less flakey in recent games.

Utterly disgusted with Ole playing 2 holding CM’s, he’s negativity has cost us the opportunity of winning by 9 goals and going top of the league.

Just realised that after 16 games, we've won more games than every other team in the league! Especially given our start, that is some run we're on.

We're winning games we'd have drawn or lost as recently as last season. This is the progress we wanted.
It's not perfect and I doubt we'll win the league, I expect the vermin will still take it.
But it's good to be back in the mix, even if it's just for a while. Bring on the dingles.

What’s being impressing me too is the quality of our one touch passing. We’re putting together some great looking combinations.
Credit to our coaching staff who get a lot of stick on here. From me included.

I don't get this "joint top" business. Goal difference counts for a reason - we're second. If it was reversed and we had the better goal difference we'd be mocking the scousers.

That being said, it's great to see the team togetherness and I really believe we're building something here. Do I think we'll win the title? Probably not, but I obviously hope so. Importantly, we're opening a gap to the other top four contenders (especially Chelsea with their media darling manager).

The penalty - it was a penalty, no doubt. People saying he tripped himself up - he did, but he wouldn't have done that if the defender hadn't brushed his leg, it was more calf on calf causing the trip, rather than a tackle of sorts.

Great win. Massive 3 points.

Villa are a damn good team.
I think they're probably one of the best teams we've played this season. Although McTominay basically ceding control of the midfield by himself may have made them look a little better than they were, their main threat still came from set pieces.

What I'm happiest about is how frequently we're creating chances these days, we used to struggle so much but now we create loads of varied, high quality chances so it's not entirely surprising to see us pick up so many wins.

Highly deserved win even though it could have eneded 2:2 easily.
Can't believe Villa fans think they got robbed

We are in the territory now where we are thinking about fine tuning things like being able to manage the games better, closing the games out etc. It’s a good sign of progress and we need to ensure we take necessary steps to fix those areas. If what we saw from Martial and especially Pogba today can be sustained for rest of the season, we will be in the title mix at the end of the season I am sure of that.

Really surprised Bailly has taken the caf MotM by such a distance. Thought Luke Shaw was actually the stand out performer and was absolutely everywhere. Gave us so much on the left.

I think we were fortunate with the win and a draw a fairer result. But we've deserved some of this with the brilliant attacking patterns we've had over these past weeks and its great not to worry about whether we'll be able to kill off teams

Bailly played well, and I’ve been a big critic of his, and still think he needs to be doing this for 10 or so games before I will get excited that he can be a reliable option.

however, what he brings is something different to the defence, so he stands out more than Shaw. I agree, I thought Shaw was our best player - but it’s Bailly who catches the eye more because of his different he is to Lindelof.

Dragging yourself to a win in a game you could’ve drawn or lost is what gets you to the top of the pile...

I hate to junk it but we look like we’re on it at the minute mentality wise.

When we had that dreadful start I'd pretty much written off achieving anything this year.
My much older and wiser pal said he reckoned we could actually compete at the top.

I thought that was breathtaking positivity, but so far he's been proven amazingly spot on.

Overall it was pretty even and, in fairness, I do think Watkins (x2) and Mings did poorly to get none of those headers on target. We hit the bar and I think both sides created chances throughout the game.
The fact a peno decided it is a good indicator of how tight it was.

A couple of observations if I may. Rashford should be rested for cup games if possible. Grealish would be phenomenal on our right wing with Bassaka. Ole needs to work on keeping clean sheets.
Observations on the game. Fantastic substitutions at exactly the right time. Grealish would be phenomenal on our right wing with Bassaka. I remember in school the other team didn't turn up so instead of sending the ref home the 6th years played the 2nd years, that is how Michael Oliver referred this match. A soft penalty but Mings elbow should have been a penalty, magic gets carded for those most games.
Great work tonight and I think we will beat liverpool when the two meet.

Don't think we can fit Grealish in unless he would play from the right wing.

If Pogba was to leave though he's a like for like player if we need a creative midfielder.
They literally aren’t alike at all... how many games have you really watched? Grealish is a left forward these days, only played centrally because Barkley is injured and their replacements are shit. Grealish would replace Rashford on the left side if anything.

Excellent performance today, from the manager to all the players bar McT. If I were to list a few players who put in exceptional performances, it would be DDG, Bailly and Pogba. Brilliant by them 3, but while it’s unfortunate that Pogba is gone in the summer, Grealish was sensational too and will be a more than able replacement.

And come on lads, some of you have to chill the post-match moaning after a performance like this. We were good and could have scored more against a very good side with excellent players who are on top form. If we really played badly, we’d have ended the game with a loss and a possible result like 7-2 (Liverpool), 0-3 (Arsenal) or 0-1 (Leicester). Chelsea also could and maybe should have lost against them just a few days ago, and while you can’t guarantee future results, we can be sure that they will give Spurs a right old game.

Also, some of you are complaining that they had more ball possession than us. Who cares lads? I care about two stats: goals scored and shots on target, and we triumphed in both.

All in all, fantastic performance and result. Happy new year lads! :)
Crazy right ? Only stat that matters is the scorline at the end. And even then we had the better chances and were more dangerous. We have some very good passing now to play out of the back and attack quickly, even if it is not on consistent basis yet. We are also much better at breaking parked buses now. But some complain over possession.
This is a very good side who gave a game to every big clubs they played against and even beat the champions 7-2.
Lets not get carried away but we have never been in this position since SAF retired and are a very young team (youngest in the league I think ?) with a great spirit.
I am sure that we will make some good additions to be even better in the futur.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
That’s the best performance of the season overall, yes we made it hard and a bit of sloppy defending BUT we got over the line.

Paul Pogba was immense today. Played his heart out in both defense and attack. Should've scored a goal. Would've deserved it. Bailly, Fernandes and Martial were great.

I think the Matic substitution was critical. Good on Ole for bringing him on at the right moment.

Don't understand why James gets so many chances. I really hope he improves his game.

Wish Rashford could've finished a few chances. Would've given his confidence a huge boost.

Grealish, Konsa and Matty Cash were great for Villa.

Pogba was immense tonight. Bailly is proving to be our best CB. Please stay fit Eric.
Bailly is doing great but, come on, Maguire has been virtually faultless in the past few months. With VVD out injured Maguire looks the best centre back in the PL.

Third game in 6 days, that was a good performance against a tough side! This and the Wolves games are the kind of games we need to get over the line in.

The only negative is the lack of Donny and the James sub at the end.
When Ole replaced Bruno with James, everybody was shocked, inckuding Bruno, but in retrospect that sub 100% saved the game and was a touch of genius.

We were being pressed badly and would have conceded. Bringing James transformed the diamond into 4-3-3, gave us more width in attack and specifically James having insane speed, allowed us to keep bringing the ball to their half, without De Gea shooting it into the middle
of nowhere and losing it immediately after us getying the ball

Surprising as it was, James' sub was brilliant. Got to give Ole when he is perfect tactician. Subs today were spot on for saving the last 10 mins.

If he were to bring on DvB, that should have happened much earlier but our midfield was so good that I cannot fault him for not risking. Unfortunately, DvB still hasn't adapted and hasn't shown that he can be trusted to be a game-changer in critical moments
