Go ahead, call me crazy but I’d rather we see what Bailly and Tuanzebe do in the second half of this season before committing to a massive CB buy like Upamecano.

We may just have the answer to the Maguire partner enigma in the squad already.

We have been scouting Badiashile who is younger, leftie, cheaper and looks a real talent
I understand. If we opt away from Upamecano for a legit reason, there's no issue. If we're judging based on 45 minutes of football, that's a problem in my opinion.

In fairness at one point we were rampant and he ran forward with the ball, lost it and just walked back, it was feckin class

He looked shocking against us that night. It’s bound to make you think twice when you’d be paying big money.

Harsh to judge totally on one game though.

I seriously doubt it. I've watched RB around 2/3 times and he's looked ok but nothing I'd be creaming my cacks over. As someone said, Konate looks the real deal

I actually agree with you. He looks good but flaws to iron out. At his age for a CB, it's what you expect. And I'm not fussed if we do go for someone else, although I do like Upamecano's profile. Pacy, progressive and athletic.

We've know about this kid from when he was 16. If we're going to pass on him, it won't be because of a bad 45 mins against us.

I think Konate is cheaper than Upamecano too and a year younger.

I'd personally opt for Konate, United just need an energetic CDM in-front of them.

With Caicedo (if he signs) he has a good passing range it looks like, and lots of energy, 5'10 he would cover some ground in games.

A back four for United would typically look like:

First choice team
Centre-backs: Maguire, Lindelof, Bailly, Konate (?)
Full-backs: Telles, Shaw, AWB, Tuanzebe (preferred at CB but he can hopefully play on the right when the opposition is an aerial team).

Sell: Jones, Rojo, Dalot

Defensive Midfielders
McTominay, Fred, Matic, Caicedo (if he signs)

McTominay and Matic are the physical CDMs who are a little more aggressive, Fred and Caicedo are the ones who are a little more energetic for quicker temp teams.

I don't actually think we are far off in defense or defensive midfield, I think it's just one addition to each on this point.

My reservations with Bailly is injuries in general, if he can stay fit its great for United honestly.

also, i haven’t seen much of upamecano. All i can remember when i read his name is rashford schooling him

I've heard Konate has been the more consistent this season, I've not watched him enough to judge but we definitely need a more mobile centre half.

It's amazing the difference a fit Bailly makes to this conversation. He transforms the defence when he's in there and playing well. Speed and mobility certainly what's required beside Harry. Maybe he'll never get injured again, eh?

Monaco fans. Go look at the latest post in his own thread. Stats don’t say anything about centre backs.
I shall check it out.

Fans don't always have the most objective view of players. Look at this place

Yea I agree with that. I also don't see Upamecano as an improvement on either of those two. Just another defender. Bailley and Tuanzebe deserve an opportunity to show they are the longterm answer.

Upamecano, the shocking performance against at us notwithstanding, is definitely an upgrade on Lindelof.

But going back to Bailly, what’s hard to overlook is his physioroom status over the last few seasons, but when he first joined United he was nailed on fantastic. If we somehow could be sure he’s put all that in the past we wouldn’t need to have this conversation about a CB.

I've mentioned it before but our system really compensates for the flaws of our CBs, someone like Upamecano or Konate would look like a world beater in Lindelof's place. Bailly's given us little glimpses of what an athletic partner can offer Maguire.

spot on, just read somewhere that we’ve kept 8 clean sheets in games where Maguire and Bailly started together (total 12 games). We wouldn’t need a new CB if we can maintain this

If we are looking for a CB I suppose it comes down to who is available and for what price. Personally from RB I would rather take Konaté as he is simply just a better defender and player. Leadership, organisation, athletiscism, all thinks it looks like Maguire needs to get the best out of him and Bissaka to be honest.

Upamecano certainly looks good and if he’s the only one available then no complaints at all but just think we’d be missing a trick not getting Konaté.

If true that's poor from us. He probably had a bad half hour and we're going to judge him on that rather than the years of scouting and information we have on him?
A bad half hour? He was atrocious for the entire game. He was caught by Greenwood for the 1st goal and then completely torn to shreds by Rashford

He was excellent in the first half no? Passed the ball like a machine and was decent defensively. They got torn to shreds in the 2nd half and they all looked hideous.

I suppose if we sign Upamecano at least he won’t have to Rashford again in a competitive match.

Our MBE ripped him a new one.

Will be difficult to maintain with Bailly's injury history but would love to think he is over his troubles

Yeah I would prefer Konate as well but with Upamecano seemingly Bayern bound then no chance would they be willing to sell both of them in the same summer

we’ve been waiting for him to be fully fit for years now. Hope he can now maintain his fitness, might spare us millions

People have bad games.

he was great against PSG across 2 legs, in the quarters last year and good against them in the group stage etc.

people forget he’s younger than tuanzebe!

I dunno defenders can have good games against the PSG attack as it depends on what side of the bed they get out of that morning

Obviously I'm not writing the lad off but I can see why we'd have our reservations about him, of course it may just be a face saving PR stunt if we've found out as expected he's decided on joining Bayern

I still thought he was their most dominant figure in the first half against us at OT before everything went t*ts up for them.

Is he heavily linked with Bayern is he? Hadn’t seen that. Are they just collecting defenders. Don’t they have Sule and Hernandez and that other French RB guy who can play CB? Add in Davies where they planning in slotting Upa in.

Hernandez and Davies are playing LB. They start Alaba (leaving) and Boateng (no longer good enough) at CB with Süle (who is not convincing) backing them up. Pavard is playing RB. Kouassi (sp?) is young and always injured and Martinez leaving.

I thing a good well scouted player ready for the next step could be the good choice.

No he wasn't, that's just revisionism. Leipzig were very good first half and he was important in that. Was making progressive passes and penetrating runs from deep. Second half he went to absolute shite and couldn't even run at times.

But even if you were right, judging someone off one game even is poor form. Not a player on the planet who hasn't had a poor game.

it's not revisionism, it's a fact he lost Greenwood for his goal, that was a mistake he made in the first half

mistake in the first half, atrocious in the second half, all in all yeah
Okay that's fine. Not going to argue over whether he was atrocious or bad or whatever. I'll still stand by what I said which is it's ludicrous to let one game have a heavy bearing on whether you sign or don't sign a player.
