Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
One thing I've been noticing for a while now and was extremely obvious in this match is that the commentators almost never acknowledge anything he does. I counted nine times in the first half where he made the ball carrier lose the ball (sometimes it just ran to another Liverpool player, one time it went out for a throw in, a couple of times it went to one of our players and three times he won it cleanly and we instantly launched some of our most dangerous attacks), yet the commentators only mentioned his name in one of those nine moments. It wasn't even one of the ones he won cleanly. They just don't mention him despite him being quite involved. It's strange.

He had a couple of poor moments on the ball and got dribbled a bit too easily two or three times, but overall he was decent. Once again he's having to do too much himself since McTominay isn't helping all that much, especially for the first 30 minutes.

Did all of the usual Fredisms of hustking and competing but was also very tidy with his passing. Just behind Shaw and Pogba today for MOTM.
I thoughT he was shocking in the first half, constantly giving the balll away. Yes he does work hard closing down spaces but at this level once you have the ball at your feet you can not pass it so poorly so often. 2nd half he was better but there was still a number of terribly misplaced passes. On other occasions he actually contributed well in sweeping forward - but i still thinks he is to limited to be a top class DM.

I thought he was our best player today alongside Shaw. I’m actually surprised to see quite a few people here criticise him, but i thought this was his best performance for United. I’d even go as far as saying it was a world class level defensive midfield performance.

It’s an interesting point. Commentators can definitely affect the narrative. They have preconceived notions about players and looks for incidents to confirm them. If Kante was buzzing round the field like Fred did during that spell they’d have been raving about him, that’s for sure.

This is definitely true. He's just not mentioned at all unless he does something really clearly bad. Same is true of Lindelof. It's like they can only comment on stuff that contributes to an existing narrative - like pogba or Bruno.

It can work in his favour as well to be honest. I personally think he's being doing a very good job for us and the more under the rader, the better it is for us.

Also agree about his game today. First half, overcomitted a few times and go away with some iffy clearances but worked hard. Second half much better. Some of his half turns, whilst being pressured deep in his own half to open his body and the pitch up was a small slice of joga bonito

That's something he's really good at and very underrated. He's not Pogba level of flair/technique but his turn of the hips and ability to progress the ball in the middle of the park or just outside his box is a big asset to our game.

I would like to see a MaFred partnership. Matic with his 1 foot arm holding players off and turning like a titanic but being 100% successful and Fred with his turn on a 6 pence moves whilst running about like he's cycling.

Commentators just say whatever is the thing on internet/social media or how the player is hyped. Fred is very good at making the runs with his dribbling, barely gets mentioned anywhere.

Thought he had a meh game yesterday. His passing was off and got crowded out in the middle.

He is nothing special, we need better passer in his position. He is a good squad player, but he should be nothing more than that.

With his pressure right? Hes really good at it and did it well. I was happy he mostly stayed on his feet with regards to that too (think he dove in once for a free ball, but didnt get anywhere near it or the opposition)

He can be a great DM if he wants to. Forget about being box to box, which is a much harder position to master, and the DM position in this United team is there to be won with very little competition

More important than Pogba to some Top Reds
Pogba has started to come into form only recently. Fred has been good since the start of last year. Not to mention Pogba was benched for a few weeks and we were winning without him. Fred is important in big games. I feel like we have a better chance with him in the team. Dont feel that way about Pogba, even though he has started to show his ability.

Anyway on thread, I thought he was good yesterday.

He's got great energy levels and runs his ass off, that would had been good enough in the early 00s, but right now just as CBs we need our CDMs to distribute and create chances. He is very limited at this, he offers almost nothing to attack. We need to improve on him, he's a good option to have as squad player but we definitely need an improvement.

DM for a team like United is much harder. Fred isn’t comfortable holding the shape or dropping between the CBs. It’d also be a waste of his engine and pressing which are his biggest qualities.

I fully disagree with that, one of the reasons I've always like Fred is his quality on the ball for a guy who is all action. He's more than capable of holding the shape and dropping in between or besides the CBs.

Brilliant performance, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the Pogba - Fred midfield and it didn’t disappoint. Tireless tonight.

Was one of the MOTM's tonight. Had a lot of ground to cover as Pogs is less disciplined defensively

Classic Fred. Needs to string together a run of games to get to this level. Hope he stays healthy

I thought he was very poor? Got dominated by lotus cheek multiple times
I’d say no. You’re right that there were a few occasions where he he was bypassed by committing himself too much, but overall he was great and I personally love the little guy for what he offers us!

Put in a lot of work

He pressed and helped win the ball back for our first goal.

His attitude and work rate is fantastic but feck me his passing range is abysmal.
Exactly. He is needed right now but his passing is poor. The worst part about his passing is the weight of it he seems to not be able to judge the weight needed or not capable of doing it
