Excellent performance. We need a younger version of him for games just like this, especially second half where teams sit off. His passing and distribution is great. He also is difficult to get off the ball.

I do wonder if there is a player out there like him that is gettable.

great performance from Matic, hopefully his injury isn’t too bad? Looked like he was holding his groin at the end, has there been any update on this?

Not as far as I'm aware. I don't think he'd have played against Liverpool anyway, I think we'll go for the McTominay and Fred double pivot in that one.

Showing up those pessimists who wanted him moved on, just because he was wrong side of 30 and was never a pace merchant.

Long may it continue. Class, permanent.

It really is a shame that Matic isn't 5-7 years younger, he would be absolutely ideal.

I remember watching a City vs Chelsea game when he was at his peak and he was a monster, had a great game up against Yaya Toure who was also in his pomp. If we can find someone of that level with plenty of years left in the tank it would improve us no end.

good squad rotation by Ole, that game was perfect for Matic and he duly obliged. Many on here didn't want him to start and some even wanted him subbed at half. A physical team where we have to break them down is good for him , as his passing is much better than McT and Fred, and he is excellent under pressure when pressed. That game would have been too physical for Fred, he would have got bullied v Burnley. Keep him and McT fresh for Liverpool game, as I feel for sure both will start, their mobility will be needed in that game. When teams come at us, Matic has a tendency to drop back alongside central defenders, for me it's too deep and invites pressure. McT and Fred will pressurise them in mid, helps us keep our shape better against possession based teams.

We have nobody else who can play that role as well as he does. He's very important to our squad. It's time some posters realize this and start giving him the credit he deserves.

Why does Ole refuse to bring him on to see out games?

With his aging legs he's made for the role, positionally brilliant and calm on the ball.

Game was crying put for him at 70 mins. I'm baffled.

I was surprised when Rashford got it at the end and who was the nearest player...none other than Matic!

Yeah, we really need to be utilising Matic far more than we do. Such a valuable player.

Should've been brought earlier, his presence was much more felt in a minute than the entirety of McTominay's cameo.

Making subs is still a massive puzzle our coaching staff is unable to solve. We seem to try our best to avoid making them.

I was screaming for him to come on, pissed me right off that we left it so late

Would have been more ideal than McTominay and really needs to be involved when we're trying to see out games.

One thing a midfield of Fred and McTominay lacks is composure and calm, but that's what Matic brings.

His composure and reading of the game is still severely underestimated, while the influence of his pace is severely overestimated.

Agree. McFred gives us intensity and platform to play emphatic attacking football but they cannot control tempo as well as Matic.

He still has a role to play. Our squad depth is so good this season.

Constantly at the STD clinic.
And two more goals conceded.
Whats that then? Two more goals conceded and no contribution in attack?

Been saying it but he's one of the most useless players out there. He does some tidying up or cleaning up in a three man midfield against a crap side and you lot lose your calm.

Not sure why ole essentially has him deployed as a LCB, feel like we get nothing going through the middle

Even Conte does not want him because he is slow. What does he bring to the table any more? He’s just clumsy and slow on the ball. Loses every 50/50 in the middle.

He's been done since even before he came to the club. Why he is still starting games in 2021 we'll need Sherlock bloody Holmes to answer.

He was good in stopping the one on one chance twice but he did feck all in midfield today. No urgency to play the ball through the line and no pressing.

I think I said it before, and I'll say it again. Sometimes wildly inconsistent players are just wildly inconsistent players and no amount of time will help them become substantially better. He is what we are seeing and I really think it's not enough.
Yup, it's what happens with every one of our mediocre players. They'll have one good game in 3 and people will keep referring to that in the next two they're shit in.

Covered the defence well at times today, not least when we were broke on and he was the last man and made the tackle. Wasnt great but in terms of playing his role he was one of our better players
