Yeh I believe so makes a little noise but I’m fine with that, fan noise has never bothered me.

The majority of games I’m putting time into basically don’t even touch the gpu it’s total overkill to have the 3080!

hooked up to the tv with the Xbox elite series 3 controller I do question why I still bother with consoles sometimes
Yeah the 3080s and 90s are beasts man. I got pushed in to getting a graphics card cos I couldn't wait for ps5 to become available but I'm glad I did, steam games work with the ps4 controller while keyboard and mouse has been quite fun to get use to for games on other platforms.

Will probably still get the ps5 eventually just for it to sit on the TV stand, though

Gotta say I am VERY impressed with my Gigabyte 3060Ti Gaming OC. It’s such a quiet card and handles absolutely everything I throw at it - as my monitor is only 60hz, I’ve capped it at that and it’s solid as a rock in Cyberpunk, COD, Control etc at ultra settings 1440p with RTX features. Then on games like Hades the fans don’t even turn on and it sits at about 43 degrees!

My monitor is 60hz by the way because I do a lot of video editing and it was bought purely for colour accuracy and USB C power for my MacBook. Can anyone recommend a higher refresh 1440p panel at about 23-27”?

It all depends on your budget really, some good displays in a range of prices.

Probably about £350 max. I’ve seen the Dell and LG ones that are well reviewed (I think they are the same panel) but I must admit I like the aesthetics of those new Gigabyte ones, although not may reviews of those. I do like Dell for monitors due to their perfect pixel guarantee.

It also depends if you want Gsync too which will add some more money, but are looking around the £500 mark for the good ones (Asus PG278QR, Acer predator etc), might be worth looking up the MSI optix monitors as they are a bit cheaper but are VA panels. But it's always wise to do your own research (youtube is good for this) for your own needs, which looks like you are already doing.

Just installed my waterblock on the GPU.
Cutting all the thermal pads was an absolute pain.

On putting it all back together one of the screws didn't really wanna play ball, but I got it attached.
Not got it in a loop yet as I've got my games room being sorted, but I turned it on quickly just to see if it was working.

Heart in mouth moment, but it did turn on thank god

Its amazing how the 3000 series handles games so well, I'm not even sure what I'd use a 3090 for (if I could afford one).
I've done a similar upgrade recently including a new 27" IPS 1440p 144hz monitor, I went for the Gigabyte G27Q and think its fantastic. I went for it because the price point (I think I paid around £340) it seemed to be the one with those features that had no major drawbacks and was actually in stock. I'm absolutely no expert and my only frame of reference are the awful 23" monitors we use at work and my old 10 year old Benq montor, but this is the nicest monitor I've ever used. You might find others with the same features at the same price point that are better in one area or another, but I'll say that picking a monitor took as many hours as picking the majority of the components in my PC combined, it's a freaking minefield.

Congrats! So for this you basically have to take your card to pieces? Is that for a custom water cooling loop? I'd never have the balls to do that, I'm planning on upgrading my CPU cooler to an all-in-one water cooler and even the thought of that makes me nervous.

Woah I knew the gpu market is a bit mad right now, but I put the RX 570 8gb Armor that came in my prebuilt [so without box etc] on my bro's facebook for £150 and the messages flooded in like crazy in the first hour alone. Even a shop down Canning Town who I presume would buy to sell.

Of course rather than being a dick and trying to milk it I'm gonna give it to the first dude that holler'd that I wouldn't need to bother with shipping, guy is jumping on a train from Romford in the AMs to pick it up to actually game. :)

Edit: Not gonna lie I upped it to 200 after I realised that the 4gb iteration was costing more than what I was selling mine.

I basically need everything but the hard drives / RAM. There anywhere I get that pre-built without having to do it myself?

There are loads of companies online. Scan definitely do them, I think NZXT do them with their components (I imagine this would be real pricey though), Currys do them but when I last looked they were all fairly low spec and overpriced. You can also just go on Amazon, but definitely look at reviews before buying anything, my brother-in-law was looking at £600 Amazon pre-builts and the specs were basically the same as you could get building yourself, so not bad value at all. A lot of local shops do this too, I bought all the components through a local shop on my old build and he offered to build it for me, and you'll probably have more control over the exact parts that way too, and you've got someone to guide you if you're unsure what you want.

Prices have gone through the roof, I got close to getting back the money i paid for my old GPU that I bought 4 years ago. It's no surprise scalping is so profitable right now and I don't see it changing anytime soon with covid and mining making a comeback.

Sorry, I didn't get a notification!
Yeah I had to totally rip it to pieces. Was a bit nervous I must say, especially cleaning all the old paste off the pads around the vrams.
Plus, when I was screwing it all back together, one of the screws really didn't wanna play ball, so that was a tight fit in the end!

AIOs are simple enough I used one for my first ever build

I settled at around the ball park of its' launch retail price almost 4 years ago too. Sadly, given the circumstances you've mention it looks like 2021 could be another shit year for PC gaming. I noticed the "shop" I got my 3070 from raised the price from the £650 I paid to £790 and still sold out 50 of them in a couple days. The cnuts are swimming in it thanks to the shit numbers manufacturers are putting up while not doing enough to at least make botting more difficult to do.

My one was built by Cyberpower back in 2018. I didn't know where to even start when it comes to building PC's at the time - and didn't intend to use it for gaming, just wanted it for web browsing and media - so for me it remains a good deal but you should know that with prebuilts, usually you won't know the brands/quality of individual parts until you receive and in cases you do it will be wildly priced. Either way you end up paying a lot more unless you can find the those similar to the Amazon ones @Turnip mentioned. I posted the deal on here before I bought it and the Cafdemz informed me it was decent enough to play most games and upgradable and exactly that it was when I eventually did want to use it for gaming, fortunately.

fecker. Thought I managed to secure a 3080 yesterday but the selling company decided to increase the price to scalping level (from 900 to around 2000$ lol) after they got the stock.
Tbf, they only got like 5 of them and had like 50 people who had reserved one. The guy was honest at least, told me it was too good of a profit to pass up.
fecking miners man, ruining gaming builds.

Thing is, in times like this I'd get one of my relatives from Canada, UK, US, UAE, or KSA to get the product at market price and ship it to me and I'd pay the shipping. But with these graphics cards I'm too much of a coward to do it since I've never returned a product (RMA) in my life and I'd be afraid of getting screwed.

Just venting, we go again.

Pretty happy I bit the bullet and ordered all my parts back in November when there was already a limited availability of GPU's yet prices were still pretty reasonable.

1660 Supers now going for 500+ euro over here, stores that have some in stock are also casually charging 800 euros for a 5700XT and 450 euros for 1650 Super.

Absolute madness

Nice. I felt pretty lucky to get anything ordered at all over Christmas and assumed it would get better after that, but looking back now I was really lucky, it looks even harder/more expensive now. Mental what's happening in some industries right now.

For performance, what exactly are you looking to do? If gaming, what resolution and refresh rate is your monitor and what games are you aiming to play?

Really fancy a 3080, wonder when there will be stock in the UK.
They come in stock but sell quickly too, if you really want one you have to setup alerts/join discord channels etc.

When Nvidia launched its RTX 3000 GPUs, the availability of the cards was less than great, with demand far outstripping supply, leading to a shortage. Now a new report suggests the problem is about to get worse.

European hardware retailer Alternate, which operates in Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, has spoken with Nvidiaabout availability and confirmed that, throughout the first quarter, the cards will be even more difficult to come by than before. There are multiple factors at play, including the surge in Ethereum mining, none of them good news.

What to Expect?
Alternate spoke with Nvidia about each of the cards, with the following situations:
  • RTX 3090: Very few deliveries, but only a few open orders
  • RTX 3080: Very few cards coming with many open orders
  • RTX 3070: Few cards incoming, but few open orders
  • RTX 3060 Ti: Very few cards coming, and a moderately high amount of open orders

Best bet is to get on the discord (one of the guys here can give you an invite, I'm not on it anymore) and be ready to pounce as soon as a link is up. Then you have to be patient and stick in the queues as people will drop out for one reason or another, even if it seems hopeless.

I managed to get a 3070 within a few hours of trying thanks to that.

Ok, one of the kids wants a gaming PC for Christmas. I know it's early, but I want to start saving or buying pieces now, so when it gets to Xmas I don't have to fork over a load of money in one go. If it's gonna be best to save I'll just do that though.

I don't mind the building route either, will give me and him something to do together.

He's only 10, 11 by Xmas, so he doesn't need the greatest pc ever, but I want it to be upgradeable down the line so he can get the best graphics if that's what he wants.

Starting from scratch here so everything is needed, tower, monitor, keyboard etc.

Don't really have a price point in mind, anyone here got any idea how much i should be spending for a decent starter gaming pc?

I should know this stuff as I loved pc gaming when I was 16-25 but haven't bothered with a pc for the past 10 years. Work sucks.

Others will be able to give you better advice than me but https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ is brilliant for putting together your build on paper and will show you all the prices and flag up any incompatibilities, can keep you on track as well if you’re buying it over time.

Thanks, definitely needed as the compatibility thing is a ballache if doing it alone.

@One Night Only only things I can think to suggest is to buy the items that stand the test of time early on and work towards the stuff that frequently gets new versions released at the end e.g. get the tower, mouse keyboard ram first and leave the cpu gpu and motherboard until last.

I7-9700k processor
3060ti or 3070 for GPU
16gb DDR4 3200 RAM
NVME SSD Drive 500gb*

Would be a good starting basis the GPU's will be the hardest part to get hold of roughly looking at about 1200ish for a build with those components.

Monitor i'd recommend starting with 144hz Gsync/Freesync supported 1080p 24 inch.

Could go bigger/higher resolution at 1440p but the majority of competitive players pc wise are still running at 1080p/24inch for maximum framerate and the small size means you can see the whole game in your peripheral vision.

Always got the option of using a 4k tv as a second monitor for the single player games with a controller if thats what they are into, i currently use my 4k tv for all single player games and my monitor for online competitive.

I feel like I've come a long way since I first opened my pre-built 2 months ago due to lack of ps5 availability. Stuck in another RAM stick, changed the GPU, swapped out the stock CPU cooler for an aftermarket one with the right air direction RGB, installed case fans which took research as I've only got one SYS fan header [Y-split 2 front fans on to it with PWM enabled, with the 3rd fan [exhaust] running through
as its' safety currents would exceed the assumed 1amp limit on the SYS], modified the case as the MasterBox Lite 5 has turd airflow, sold the old GPU and monitor covering 85% cost of the M27Q I replaced the latter with.

Next will be to change out the shite h310 pro vd mobo and the i5 8400 which seems to have ramped up the bottleneck at 1440p.

Getting a Fractal Meshify filled with AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB RAM, 500GB PCIe SSD, 2TB HDD and a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8GB. Any thoughts on this combo? What's the major bottleneck for gaming? Games to avoid due to poor performance?

We probably will reach an fps level suited to my own fossile neurological system. 240fps is way beyond my level...

My son might not be too impressed, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
