I thought he had a good second half, won several duals and had some good driving runs, .Pogba was actually better than him in tracking deeper though which makes him an odd fit in this system.

He is not great in tight positions on the ball, that's a real problem.
Not sure if he can improve this enough to make the next step up.
Let's hope so.

He's poor in tight spaces, which really hurts our ball retention and ability to play out from the back. Even when he has time on the ball his passing is quite limited. The only thing he did well today was drive forward a few times when he had space to run in to. I don't think his defensive contributions are good enough to justify his inclusion in these bigger games anymore.

Was at fault for the first goal, he gave Firmino much time on the ball and let him make a pass without shielding defense. He really should close him down to slow.

On 2nd goal, what was he doing by sprinting? does he know strikers like Canavi don't keep the ball when they collect the ball, they always flick off?

This season has been a struggle for him, being asked to do more and not really up to it. Not great today but stuck at it and looked better when Fred came on, he never really seems comfortable without Fred. Not sure what he was doing for opening goal, his ball watching is a bad habit he needs to get out of.

Not mature enough to play DM on his own. Looks panicked in possession and needs Fred next to him for an easy pass when in trouble. Pogba marauding forward today left him deep on his own and being pressed by two players at all times.

He’ll come good though with experience

His defensive awareness is absolutely atrocious. Has no idea of what’s around him and it’s a much bigger issue that the fact he gives the ball away in poor positions. He has zero scent of the danger behind him and neither does Pogba (albeit it isn’t his ‘game’ and he brings significantly more to the table).

They’re an awful pairing. I’d go as far as saying they’re our worst one in a defensive sense.

I didn’t think Scott did too bad but you can’t play him and have him doing the job he was doing today being deepest midfielder taking ball of a back 4. The center backs are too slow moving the ball which lets opposition close right on Scotty and his touch isn’t good enough to take those balls. He used his strength a couple of times today to get away with some heavy touches.

still a valuable squad player and will work in some games

Good point. He makes typical mistakes of CB playing in midfield, not only defensively (no scent of danger) but also seems to think he has much more time on the ball than he actually has.

In my opinion Scott's been doing great considering he's playing out of nominal position. He's a good stop-gap midfielder who needs to be upgraded.

The sooner we realise he isn't a DM and at best can be a squad box to box player the better.

I have no doubt about that, they just never work well together and they have similar flaws.

I think we lost against Palace at home the last couple of times with both of them starting.

Liverpool are one of, if not, the best pressing team in Europe. He wasn't the only player to dispossessed when pressed but I don't think we help ourselves at times with our ponderous build-up.

Other than that, I thought he grew into the game and made some really nice driving runs.

I like Scott but today wasn't his best performance. Lost some cheap possession, wasn't quick enough into challenges, didn't drive us forward as he can on a good day.

This lad can never do anything right according to the people in here

He’s a fantastic footballer. He wasn’t good enough for their first goal, they walked through us, otherwise, he was decent. Good passing and dribbling

Did we watch the same game? He shielded the ball well and drove it forward through the lines several times. Did well overall I thought. Don't get why he gets slated

He’s hated on here which is odd. Love him. Not his best game today.

I've always been a supporter of Mctominay but have to admit I was worried when I saw him next to pogba today.
He's a box to box midfielder with a goal in him for me. Never a holding midfielder. Also, he's been pretty poor in general recently and I believe Matic should have started today as he's been excellent in his last few games.
Overall I would rate Mctominay this season as our 4th best CM, I think he starts more often than his form warrants as he's an academy product.

Go back a year and the caf were saying he was an £80m player, one of our top 10 ever academy graduates and one of the best midfielders in the league. ‘Hated’ may be a bit of a stretch.

Must be said he had an awful game today, under pressure his passing is extremely limited. He's ok as a squad player but I think we will be looking to replace him at midterm.

Thought he had a very good 2nd half. Terrible first half

Opinions eh. I thought he played well today. Pressured into losing the ball a couple times (Liverpool the best in Europe at that, btw) but I think he did very well. A couple of really driving runs out of deep midfield too.

I’m not Fred’s biggest fan, but he’s definitely above McTominay’s level currently. That’s not to say Scotty can’t improve or that he shouldn’t be in the squad.

It’s a tough ask for him and Pogba to go up against Liverpool’s three, but they did well. If we could cut out the fecking horrendous passing in our defensive third (movement isn’t good enough either), it would make a massive difference.

We had a tough period in the second half, but apart from that I thought we were far more in control than we have been in other big games so far this season.

Whenever we play the bigger teams & pull out McFred I always ask myself if McTom was being lauded as he is by some on here but having watched him play would I be bothered seeing him on the team sheet & I don’t think I would.

He does has a tendency to grow into games but for large periods of matches he runs around a lot but provides nothing else, he improved as the match went on today but we need an upgrade massively - I suppose that may have been DVdB but he’s actually managing to make McTom look undroppable.

Still growing as a player. A mixed game today. What’s encouraging is seeing some of the excellent things he does. He’s not bland, and has some very good qualities. That’s are lots of players you look at, and you can say nothing good about them. He needs to improve his awareness and positioning - but he’s a great player to have in the squad.

not every player needs to be world class.

Dvdb would never work alongside pogba we need a proper dm to do that

People (including me) get too up and down on McTominay. He should and probably will be the backup DM here for a long time and maybe get some time at CB depending on the manager and how much we play 3 at the back.

VDB and Fred fighting for the 8 shirt and an elite holding mid backed up by McTominay next to them (and we can play both together if we need to kill games off with parking the bus and countering fast instead of with possession).

I look forward to watching this game again, because I thought he was very good today, and most of these comments suggest that he had a stinker. I really didn't see that at all

Didn’t think he had the best starts to game but definitely thought he grew into the game and played well overall.

He just isn’t a DM. Did alright today, but it’s obvious that he plays much better with another “workhorse” like Fred, or a proper DM. I see him as a box to box #8

I think he had a bad game overall, he missed so many passes and when under pressure he couldn't relief it, he was obviously targeted. We improved when Fred came in.

He had a bad game entirely. Was all over the place and clumsy on the ball.

The o ly good thing was that he sprayed some nice passes from time to time.

I must have been watching a different game to everyone else but I thought he was ok / good for majority of the game .

100% agree.

He deserves a lot of credit for the way he receives the ball under a lot of pressure and glides forward. He does it all the time and is almost always successful. Really decent staple to his game.

You’re not the only one man! I thought he was decent. Genuinely baffled at some of the criticism. He had a couple of sloppy moments but a handful of very good moments and we won!

Agreed. I don't get the replies in this thread. Did I watch a different game?

He's not a DM at all, which just further highlights our need to get one urgently. If he's played alongside a DM, I'm sure his focus and game will evolve accordingly.
